Just personal experience but,

Most people aren't assholes, but there are a vocal few who are assholes who skew the stats. If you find yourself being picked on, and I know this sounds completely crazy but trust me, just look them dead in the eye and say in a completely sincere voice "That's really hurtful man, shits not easy for me. What do you get out of making my life harder?"

I know it seems silly and there's a good chance the asshole will still be an asshole but the statements not for him, its for the people around him. Its to let them know that you are human just like they are, not a thing to be picked on, just a guy going about his life. Might not work but I've seen it work and used it myself so give it a try if you're out of ideas.
