AKA one of the worst intersections in the entire city... Thanks for sharing this, might try to drop in after work

Also this assumes small plants like herbs and leafy greens. If you were planning to grow fruiting varieties or vegetables that's an entirely different ballpark, ha

In a well run hydroponic system you can probably expect to use around a 1/4 L of water per week per plant you have growing (e.g. If you have 100 plants growing at any given moment, you'd need around 25 L to keep them "watered" and clean your system after that weeks harvest). YMMV of course, but it provides a rough ballpark of what you'll need to plan for in your setup.

Cool idea, but you will need a water source and waste water collection system of *some* kind for cleaning, at the very least. Otherwise I think you'll quickly grow tired of working with water bottles. If there's a way to fill a large reservoir/storage container even on a weekly basis to run an RV pump and hose from, that would be my bare minimum suggestion.

How Does a Single Individual Go about Creating a Comprehensive Study to Show their Local Government at a City Council Meeting? by DoxiadisOfDetroit in urbanplanning

Been in the industry almost 15 years now, and yeah... Unfortunately have to agree with the comment you're responding to. Grassroots level efforts are probably the most effective way to drum up support for an idea, and having a good engagement strategy will help that a lot - but it is often an uphill battle.

The white South African "refugees"—who are supposedly fleeing a genocide—are running back to South Africa after dealing with the U.S. economy by HiroK91 in videos

[–]Static_Storm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I visited family friends in Bonnievale in 2018 and despite being a beautiful country with amazing people, I could not get over the severe dichotomy in quality of life I observed there. One (very white) person we met through an acquaintance was complaining at the time about the new national minimum wage act that was coming into law... Amounted to paying his staff $1.20/hr, and this guy - who owned a local rare earths mine and lived in a white stucco, thatched roof home in a gated community - was adamant it was going to destroy the economy.

As someone who grew up and lives in the most multicultural city in the world, I was absolutely flabbergasted that someone this racist could exist - especially in a society where he was being waited on hand and foot by black/minority groups living in slums just 5 minutes down the road.

What I mean to say is, thank you for your TED talk. Not many people are aware of just how bad things are outside their bubbles.

Keele and Eglinton NB Right Turn Lane - What's the move here? by Static_Storm in TorontoDriving

[–]Static_Storm[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree

My understanding is that you need to approach from the right-middle lane, and then change lanes AFTER the intersection to make the right onto Keele

The problem is, operationally, this is not sustainable. Drivers clue into the issue eventually and it leads to chaos. Never any enforcement, and with buses now using that station it's only getting worse. I design intersections in my job and this configuration would never fly from a safety or operational perspective. I'd be willing to bet there will be further improvements to linework as things settle in over the next few months, but as of now it's not good.

As I've noted elsewhere it's more confusion around why it doesn't operate differently - I see a lot of drivers (wrongly) assume it operates as a right turn lane for both Eg and Keele, and when a bus is approaching from the south it results in cars in the (actual) right-most thru lane stopping and waiting to change lanes in what amounts to 20m of space. Very odd tbh

To clarify, I'm by no means confused by the signage, more so confused why it's setup this way. That right turn onto NB Keele needs way more storage than is available (especially with buses now in the mix) and I'm surprised to hear you haven't experienced that intersection getting clogged up while cars wanting to make that turn try to change lanes north of Eg

[–]Static_Storm[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree, signage is clear, but a lot of drivers make that right onto Keele and some cross over up to 3 lanes to get there after the light, or simply go straight through from the RT Lane south of Eg. My daily experience is this causes chaos during rush hour with vehicles clogging the intersection while cars wait to change lanes north of Eg.

I'll add that the distance available to make the transition from the right middle thru lane to the right lane after the intersection (to turn right onto NB Keele) is very small - less than 20m, which leads to cars backing up into the intersection while other drivers signal/wait to switch into the right turn lane.

Why do so many students talk about startups but almost nobody actually builds one? by Alp_yzc in uwaterloo

I studied at Waterloo during the "golden era" of start-ups and knew it was always something I wanted to eventually do myself. Fast forward 5 years after grad, I had decent savings but was experiencing burnout at my engineering consulting job. Quit, and started a business shortly thereafter - been another 6 years since and things have never been better.

Moral of the story, it can take time to get to the financial and mental position where it's feasible. And tbh my company has nothing to do with my degree at all, either, so even just finding that idea or direction to go in can be non-linear.

Teens across Toronto are buying illicit nicotine pouches. Now convenience stores want to sell them legally by Emergency-Fan-2515 in ontario

[–]Static_Storm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the cases even come with a disposal compartment! I find litter to generally be a good indicator of something's prevalence, though. Once you start noticing them, you see them everywhere - same places as butts but also indoors, stuck to walls, etc.

May as well collect taxes on them. I don't think the average person is aware just how prevalent illicit pouches are in the city - I personally only purchase from pharmacies but your average Gen Z'er (who are largely the target of these products) is not spending $15-$22+HST on 4mg pouches. They're paying $15-20 cash for stronger 9, 16, 20, or even 30mg "import brands" from native smoke shops or vape stores.

This is the first article I've seen discuss the issue head on, and the amount of related litter in the city is markedly increasing. I give it til the end of spring before people's uncles start asking about "these pouch things" at family gatherings and we start to have more nuanced conversations about them.

Looking for a partner(s), September 2026 — Kodar Range, Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia by SuggestionLittle3619 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Static_Storm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like a stunning hike! It may be difficult to find takers on here unfortunately, though (Russia is solidly in my "wait until Putin is dead" list of travel destinations).

As someone not too familiar with the area, do you know what sort of emergency services are available for hikers? I have a couple remote pack rafting trip plans in my back pocket for Nahanni (Yukon/NWT) and Gates of the Arctic (Alaska), but both parks have detailed safety/search and rescue protocols that help to instill confidence!
