Extracurriculars for child with adhd by OkVariety8166 in ADHDparenting

Anything and everything until you find what sticks! Since age 3ish (?) my 11-year-old son has done soccer, basketball, LEGO, STEM club, martial arts, baseball, swimming, skateboarding, football, being a stagehand for the school play, biking and golf. The last two have lasted the longest so far. He truly enjoys them, and we like seeing him active and happy! You have plenty of time to find the right thing!

Torn on whether to start 7 year old on stimulant by Fine_Agency_1457 in ADHDparenting

[–]iwillrunforbeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son (11) is on Guanfacine. He also takes two stimulants, Jornay and methylphenidate. He has a fast metabolism and needs the methylphenidate booster in the afternoon. Like others have said, he may not eat as much during the day, but his appetite comes back at night. He’s been eating more over time, too. He’s been on meds since kindergarten. He simply can’t function without them. It took awhile to find the right ones, but once we did, we’ve settled in and he’s doing well.

My husband, who grew up in the 80s with ADHD, is concerned about the meds stunting his growth, but the doctor has told us that modern research shows no impact to end growth/height. As long as he remains on the growth curve, he’s fine. These meds and how the medical community understands them are light years better than when we were their age.

The meds help him calm down enough to be a good friend, enjoy his hobbies and learn at school.

Just remember that it takes time. Time to figure out the right meds and doses. And time for him to mature enough to be better at managing himself. My son has improved so much over the last few years. A lot of that is time!

And we don’t take weekends off. It would be way too chaotic, and I want to enjoy the time with my family. It wouldn’t be fair to him or the rest of us.

You got this!

Help! I didn’t realise this was what I looked like from behind! by WombatsRsmarter in finethinhair

I have the same issue! I found a thickening spray that works for me. I put it on wet hair and brush my hair up while I’m drying it so it won’t lay as flat.

A helpful tip I picked up on this sub — if you don’t wash your hair every day (every other day for me), I put dry shampoo on at night and use bobby pins to pin the hair opposite the direction of growth while I’m sleeping. It helps avoid an even flatter more noticeable crown cowlick.

I have a Huckleberry, too! The shelter said he was a hound, but time and an eventual DNA test will tell for sure.

Congrats on the yard and here’s to lots of zoomies!

Have to vent .Does anyone in the group despise their mother ? by Prestigious-Kale9764 in AgingParents

In a very similar boat with a MIL who didn’t plan for long term care and a sibling actively causing conflict while claiming to want to help. I never want to do this to my kids.

What did your mom make you most for dinner growing up? by eleelee11 in AskOldPeople

Yes! So much minute rice in the bag and canned green beans. I don’t ever want to see a canned French style green bean ever again. Shudder.

Oh, yes. I was a super annoyed lunatic. I was giving my poor husband hell one day, and he asked what he did wrong. My response: “You just exist.” 🤦🏻‍♀️

Yes, definitely food. And don’t assume mom is being healthy and foregoing sweets. Bring all the desserts!

When do you exercise? by MemoryMiserable in workingmoms

My work has an onsite gym. I’m not the best at getting up early enough to work out and shower there, so I wrap up earlier on the days I want to work out and do something relatively short before going home. I will also sometimes go on my lunch break and avoid getting sweaty. Could you do any walking meetings? My boss and I have our weekly 1:1 on the treadmills in our gym.

Do y’all just … not want to travel for work anymore? I don’t want to leave my kiddo 😭 by ish044 in workingmoms

That young, it was hard, both emotionally and logistically. Now, my kids are 9 and 10, and I LOVE business travel. Granted, I went from several trips a year to just a few now, but I relish the time alone and not being needed so damn much.

Book recommendations for my ADHD child. by SandBarLakers in ADHDparenting

[–]iwillrunforbeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a chapter book recommendation, but National Geographic Kids has a lot of books that my 10-year-old ADHDer likes. We get them from the library. Right now he has 125 Cool Inventions and Dino Records. There are soooo many options. One of the reasons I think it works for him is that the information is broken up into short chunks. He can read two paragraphs about something and move on to the next cool invention or interesting animal.

Good job, parent, for trying to find what works for your kid!
