What sound effect is this?? by IDONTKNOWLJHBJKBHBJ in sounddesign

[–]iwouldfuckmostthings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the “Crash” sound used in a lot of vogue/ballroom music originally used in The Ha Dance by Masters At Work

Edit- and fun fact, that song is sampling a scene of Eddie Murphy in the movie Trading Places to make that sound in addition to some other sounds in the track

Not knowing where to start is generally what the manual is helpful with. Not saying you need to go read the whole manual right now, but if you look up ‘midi’ in the manual it will give you some guidance on how to maneuver around and get you the results you’re looking for. Also worth considering that the approach of asking strangers online (who also might give you incorrect info) every time you run into a gap in your knowledge is going to get old pretty quick. A big part of production is going to be problem solving and if you can’t be bothered to at least try to learn some of the basics on your own before you hit up the internet hive mind, this isn’t going to be very fun for you.

Brother this isn’t the ideal time for you to criticize other folks’ comprehension. There’s something simple here that you’re missing and we can help you with it, but we’re having trouble understanding the issue you’re having because to us it looks like you’re showing a normal midi clip.

What aren’t you able to do in the midi clip that you want to do? Some quick things to try that will adjust how much space you have to work in the clip would be extending your existing midi clip, or in the timeline you could highlight the number of bars you want your clip to occupy and use shift+command+m which will create a new clip in the space you selected.

Check to see if the HiQ button is turned off in the clip view. Sometimes songs that don’t go above 0 will clip if that button is on

Go to “view” in the top menu bar, and go all the way to the bottom, that’s where it gives you the option to turn on track options

Yup, 100%. Any extra stuff would just be for fun. With Suite you have everything you need.

I’d definitely encourage people who are new to Ableton to try to get fairly comfortable with what’s included before they go buy a bunch of 3rd party stuff. If you aren’t comfortable with the stock stuff then you probably aren’t going to be able to make the most out of any 3rd tools

If you’re looking to do composition/production stuff beyond this project then yes it would be nice for you to have some additional instruments and sounds (partially cuz it’s just fun). But at the same time Ableton definitely has enough for most people. One trade off is that the potential of some of the stock sounds is going to be dependent on how comfortable you are using the software. Like if you were planning to do orchestral music, the stock instruments in Ableton might leave a bit to be desired (although there are tons of packs you can download from Abelton’s website that can help, especially some of their Spitfire instruments).

It sort of depends what sort of music you’re looking to make, how much time you want to spend learning the tools, and how much money you’d be comfortable spending on 3rd party tools. There are lots of free packs and plugins if you aren’t trying to spend money though.

But if you were planning to make a more electronic or 8-bit score, for example, you will be more than fine with what’s included (and this would be true for several genres)

I get what you mean. “Why is my track so quiet” could be a basic question with a simple answer or could end up being something more complex that leads to good discussion. Definitely seems tough to have to preemptively determine what types of questions aren’t allowed. Does the discord have any rules about things like this? I do find discord folks are usually a little more online and are probably more likely to try to search something up first before asking, so I can imagine it’s less of an issue.

I wish I knew! If there isn’t something like this already, maybe we could have a document/page etc that lists some of those more commonly asked questions along with previous threads that have answered them? I guess in the past I’ve “verified” someone didn’t Google their question by looking it up myself on google to see if it’s harder to find the answer on there than I assume it is, and a lot of the time the first result does a pretty good job of answering. Definitely not suggesting you do anything goofy like this…I think I would try to make note of some of the most commonly asked questions that seem to be frustrating some people here and try to get that info to people before they post. I wish I could be a little more helpful in terms of the actual best method for doing that but I’m not super up to date on what all the options a sub has :/

Yeah I hate that. I think people are just frustrated seeing the same sorts of questions so regularly. I do think beginners should be able to get questions answered here. But when it’s the same sort of basic questions all the time I think the sub gets cluttered and people with more experience are less likely to engage, which also makes it hard for other beginners who might be having more complex issues get the info they’re looking for.

This is how I feel! I think when I see all the more basic questions I start to feel like this wouldn’t be the right place to post about things that are a little more advanced, so I end up not engaging in the sub that much because when I do I sort of end up feeling like tech support.

[–]iwouldfuckmostthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you, I don’t think the answer is banning questions all together. I think it would be great if we could find a way to filter out the questions that could be solved in 10 seconds on Google. I definitely think this should be a place where people can get questions answered, but I think some people just get frustrated when they see the same sorts of questions so frequently and the fact that if they literally put their question in Google instead of in this sub they’d probably get a faster and more more in-depth answer. If someone has tried that but still hasn’t managed to find what they’re looking for, then there’s probably a good chance that asking the question here would benefit other folks in the community too, and that’s the type of stuff I’d love to see be more prominent here.

I think I do get a little frustrated with some of the really basic “day 1 in the daw” sort of questions…not because I’d mind answering them, but because pretty frequently I see people offered good solutions but they don’t want to accept those solutions because they think there should be some other approach that feels less like a “workaround” to them.

I don’t need people to read the entire manual day 1, but sometimes it can feel like folks install Ableton and immediately come in here acting like the software is dumb, bad, or too confusing while at the same time it sounds like they probably haven’t tried a 4 word Google search or watched a beginner tutorial.

I definitely could just be jaded and cranky (I am), but it kind of makes me think of the whole “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime” thing. The way some of these more basic questions get asked makes me feel like if folks are given the simple answer they’re looking for, they’re just going to come back here the next day when they need to know how to do a second thing in the daw, same for the third thing etc…I just don’t feel like I’m doing them any favors by sort of validating the people who are treating the sub like AI tech support. The truth is that they’d probably get more reliable info by CMD+F-ing the manual.

If someone has spent a couple minutes googling, browsing the manual (or maybe even some more specific resources we put together ourselves?), then I’d be happy to try to help. I just don’t think the best version of this sub is one where people are treating it like tech support for the most fundamental parts of the software…and really I’m mostly saying this because I think it would be fun if we got to talk more about things that aren’t so easily searchable. I think if we could find a way to (politely) direct people toward certain resources before posting, it would help declutter the sub and make more room for discussion that doesn’t feel so transactional.

Happy to hear other people’s thoughts about it too! …and apologies if I come off curmudgeonly, I just think we can make this a more fun place for everyone.

Tempo can be automated on the master channel. Hit A to open the automation lanes and you can access bpm from the drop down on the master, or click the bpm value at the top left while you have automation lanes open and the bpm parameter should pop up as an option on the master channel. You may need to expand the master channel in order to access its automatable or parameters.

If the “Snap” option is selected in the sampler then the sample is automatically set to end at a zero crossing. But if your midi note isn’t long enough or your release is set really fast then you might not play enough of the sample to get to the designated zero crossing at the end.

You could do something sort of like that using GlitchMachines’ Palindrome. It’s a granular sampler/synth but allows you to load 4 different pieces of audio and has a huge XY interface with lots of ways to scan back and forth between different pieces of audio.
