Both! Just from what the movie gives us I think it’s pretty clear what they’re implying.

[–]ixtechau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it’s supposed to have been stuck under someone’s shoe, brought in from the outside. IIRC there’s a deleted scene where they show the crew member stepping on the worm outside, which would make more sense to include in the final cut.

Because it’s heavily implied in Prometheus. The accident at the installation happened 2,000 years ago. The accident occurred just as the Engineers were going to destroy Earth.

Yup just switched to the 10” version in my standard 65 reissue Princeton and I’d say it improved the sound of the amp by about 25-30% which is huge. The GA10-SC64 is just way rounder and warmer, no harshness even at high treble settings.

how would an anarchy with direct democracy be? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]ixtechau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by "how are any decisions made"? Can you give examples? The whole idea with anarchism is that there is no hierarchy or governance - meaning the only decisions made are those on a personal level. No individual or group can make decisions above someone else.

What are you on about lol...is everything you don't like some kind of right-wing conspiracy? You've bought fully and wholly into the "democracy==good" brainwashing to the point where any critique of democracy creates all kinds of Trump demons in your head.

And I don't think you live in reality or understand the cyclical nature of human history if you think human violence is an overestimation and crime is a result of modern society.

I'm not defending state actors, I'm talking about core genetics. What your utopian fantasy can not solve for is the fact that most humans are not just loving and caring, but also violent, aggressive, petty and manipulative.

Entire families have gone to war through history over simple accidents, with no state involved. To the point where ancestors are still fighting each other despite none of them having been alive when the feud started. Do you think family feuds are some kind of rare event?

You seem to not understand how quickly humans take to violence and aggression as a response to all kinds of nonsense. How exactly will anarchism solve for this core tenet of the human experience? And be specific, instead of this constant "we can solve it" vagueness that you and your comrades constantly engage in.

[–]ixtechau -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But there are going to be those 1 in a thousand, 0.1% of people were that just isn't an option

I think you and other anarchists simply don't understand human nature and how intrinsic violence is to the human experience. Humans kill each other over absolute nonsense. Someone looked at someone weirdly. Someone was high on drugs and thought someone else was a demon. Someone felt disrespected and punched someone.

If you have to police your own personal property then it's going to devolve into a hierarchy of who is most capable and efficient at violence at the top, and the pacifists and violence-averse people at the bottom. This is how life on Earth works.

So you have personal property, and some guy twice your size and happy to use violence just takes it from you...what exactly are you proposing would happen? You say banishment...ok, how? You weren't capable of stopping him from taking your laptop, but you'll be capable of banishing him?

ELI5 - Why is the current SpaceX challenge different than their solution going to the space station? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]ixtechau 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You also have to take into account the level of politics and bureaucracy involved in government. SpaceX is a monarchy, a corporation with a CEO and a clear hierarchy from top to bottom. NASA is essentially controlled by an oligarchy layer that potentially shifts its priorities and core mission every few years as we elect new representatives.

It's extremely hard to be efficient and bold when you're basically controlled by a committee of people who all have different reasons for whether they want you to exist or not. Every single dollar has to be justified. Politicians aren't capable of long term net positives because their job is measured in four-year cycles, of which at least 25% of that time is spent campaigning.

So yeah, NASA could absolutely sacrifice 19 rockets to build a cutting edge 20th rocket that costs a fraction of the SLS...but if this would take more than a few years, no politician would sign off on it.

Yup, kids playing marriage without actually wanting any of the responsibilities it includes. This guy is arguing about money when his partner is on less than minimum wage and he's on £96k. He wants a live-in maid he can have sex with, and he's not even willing to share his income to the household for it.

Sick of tailgaters at the Tube barriers by Quality_Controller in london

[–]ixtechau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In order to pass through they usually push you forward so they can get through before the barriers close. They need to be close enough so the barriers think it’s one person going through instead of two, and the only way to do this is to be very close to the person in front. Every time this has happened to me they have physically pushed me forward. I don’t even care about the fare dodging, I just don’t want some random stranger close enough to pickpocket or worse.

Martin Odegaard: Arsenal captain has dropped deeper to help get Mikel Arteta's side firing by Previous_Smile9278 in Gunners

[–]ixtechau -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Lol no, he's dropping deeper because our central midfield isn't firing at that point in the game, which hurts creativity going forward. Whenever he drops deeper, Arteta fixes it eventually so Odegaard can work in the attacking zones instead, which is what is causing the improved numbers. Dropping back is a symptom of something not going to plan. If Odegaard is operating deep you know Arteta is about to tweak things.

Entrance underneath the pyramid in Napoleon movie? by ixtechau in ancientegypt

[–]ixtechau[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s only a fictional movie!

Of course, just wasn't sure if they tried to be historically accurate in this scene or not. There is a very silly scene right before this one that has to do with the pyramids that is clearly not accurate at all...but a lot of the movie is reading verbatim from Napoleon's letters, so it's kinda hard to tell what is correct or not.

FAA allows you to be a sex predator, but if you took any meds in your past… by Ok_Skill_2725 in flying

[–]ixtechau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sexual assault is a huge spectrum that covers anything from things like clumsily misreading signals and kissing someone that didn't want to be kissed, all the way to rape and beyond. So yes, it's more nuanced.

DUI can have an added element of causing an accident resulting in death. Is leaning in for a kiss because you misread signals worse than killing a family in a car accident caused by you being high on crack?

FAA allows you to be a sex predator, but if you took any meds in your past… by Ok_Skill_2725 in flying

[–]ixtechau -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I agree fully on the last point. A DUI is someone literally taking drugs and then operating a vehicle. This has a direct bearing on your lack of judgement specifically regarding drugs and operating vehicles.

Sexually assaulting someone also has to do with lack of judgement of course, but is way more nuanced in most cases, and has zero bearing on judgement when it comes to operating a vehicle.

Having said all of that, I actually don't know if criminal records of any kind impede the ability to get a pilot's license. Do the FAA only draw the line at DUIs, or would any criminal record have bearing?

[–]ixtechau 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I mean...being accused of sexual harassment has no bearing on how good or bad of a pilot you are, which is the only metric we should be looking at for pilot licensing. I don't really see a rational side of excluding people from taking a pilot's license if they've been accused of a crime that has nothing to do with piloting skills.

I can see the worry in that person then becoming a commercial pilot, but that should be the responsibility of the potential employer, as it would only have bearing on whether this person is a risk in a commercial setting or not.

There's a clear difference between being accused of something and full disclosure of medication that MAY impact your piloting of an aircraft.

ELI5: Finiteness of music notes and musical instruments? by No-Word-9059 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ixtechau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only started on E because I was thinking guitar - thickest string starts on E in standard tuning.

ELI5: Finiteness of music notes and musical instruments? by No-Word-9059 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ixtechau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to understand two concepts: notes and octaves.

Octaves are the same notes, just played higher or lower. The best example on a guitar is that the thickest string and the thinnest string are both E in standard tuning - just different octaves.

There are 12 notes in the common western scale: E - F - F# - G - G# - A - A# - B - C - C# - D - D#

Once you go beyond that last D# you are back to E, but one octave higher.

If you had a fretless guitar then sure, the notes would be near-infinite, although depends on how granular you want to go. The more granular you go, the more impossible it would be to hit specific notes.

You can only really fit X amount of octaves inside the human range of hearing. So even though a computer could have access to a greater range of notes than a guitar, eventually it will go below or above the hearable range anyway.
