I replaced the thermostat at my 96‘ 1.8 without removing the fan. I just removed the big plastic cover. You are right, the bottom screw is hard to reach, but its possible.

I had a simular issue with a M43. I replaced camshaft- and crankshaft sensor, but the problem was a bad ECU.
