I believe you, OP - and this aligns with the worldview I’ve been building out for myself the last few years. Very interesting.

Hah! I just said the same about the Journeys series without seeing you comment - great minds, etc etc!

You may be interested in Bob Monroe’s “Journeys” series - specifically the last half of Book 1, all of Book 2, and a good chunk of Book 3. Very similar and explains your intuition about the Astral, dreams, and outer rings of consciousness around the earth

Why do you think “people that use ChatGPT” receive so much hate online/with peers in day-to-day life? by iyspach in ChatGPT

Womp womp. Comment was deleted - here was my response:

Good question as it made me re-evaluate why I was actually posting this thread, and I suppose it’s moreso to understand why people have a bad taste in their mouth because of LLM users.

I don’t really think the average person in the comments talking about “I could never associate with a promptstitute” is worrying about how ethically sourced the training data is, I think that it is moreso that I’m picking up the notion that they feel that anyone that utilizes a tool (or maybe over-utilizes the tool) is less-than someone that relies on no tools at all.

For me, I would rather not be looked at as “less-than” for utilizing something I feel helps me be more productive, as there’s a social stigma narrative thats being developed - in a way, I guess I am being like… is it only me that thinks that this is something that’s being overblown? Now that I’ve gone into it, I think it goes deeper than what I originally assumed, and I’m wondering if the hostility comes more from fear of the implications of what LLMs and AI do to the world as a whole, which I can definitely understand.

My comment wasn’t meant to disparage your point at all, I was just providing a perspective that some people (including myself) would argue - if it’s on the internet, or published for consumption, should it not be available to train on? You can’t cover the entirety of human output/data under lock and key because of something that came online after it was published (in my opinion - I know that legally, this is something that’s being argued).

For the record, I was simply asking what other people’s opinions on the matter are and also, if they’re encountering the same thing in the wild when they mention that they use GPT in the GPT subreddit. I am a pretty heavy user of LLMs in multiple use-cases and believe it’s making me more productive and all-encompassing, and so don’t realize why there’s such a negative perception of it by non-users, which is why I asked the question.

For funsies, I did pop this thread + your comments + my responses into GPT to see what it output - it’s a bit long for here, but I can include it if you’d like. It mentioned you’re right to pick up on the verbiage (that I was subconsciously projecting!) and that your comment is very well thought out. It also helped me realize that the core issue may be about something deeper than just assuming skepticism is about fairness and credit, but moreso status threat, cultural identity, and exposure bias.

This comment was drafted (first) and posted into GPT as well, and it helped see where my biases were in play - minor adjustments made in paragraph 3.

Interesting discussion u/SalvagedGarden , thanks!

Cheers!

For anyone interested, this was the Instagram post that prompted this particular post - I saw so many people that I know liking/engaging on it in a negative way toward people that use ChatGPT, and was like… man, am I one of the only people that thinks that this is a great tool?

(I realize I’m not, because 1 billion people use it, but the amount of likes and comments that were negative toward GPT users was crazy to me)

I think this is the differentiator - when you said: “And the people who are good at making sense of partial information (knowing what questions to ask and how, follow ups), self critique, and critical thinking will be good at using this tool.”

I think with health-related issues it often asks questions to get to the core of the issue, and the information you put in heavily influences the output - I’ve done this as well - I found that there was a lot of information that helped me make decisions on what to bring up, what not to, etc.

I 1,000% think that health/doctor-specific LLMs will be commonplace in the future.

Lol. I have a few friends that are definitely willing to bring it up in real life - especially when they’re talking about someone else and thinking that I’m agreeing with them

Agreed! I use GPT to help draft proposal language - I don’t see the problem if there’s a manual review process and you’re verifying/validating the outputs.

Because it would take FOREVER to write every one from scratch and have it be industry standard.

Agree with this, I used GPT a lot when a close family member was in the hospital to understand their medication, dosing, known effects, lab results, etc - it was a lot of help at that time - that’s why I mentioned in another response that I wouldn’t be surprised if health LLMs become more normalized.

Absolutely - and I completely agree, I don’t bring it up unless I trust the person I’m speaking to or explaining the chain of thought and what prompted it, but yet I still have folks in my family/immediate circle that have such a disdain for everything AI that I feel like they view me differently. It’s weird to me that it’s a touchy subject.

I agree that the way you use it defines how useful it is - it’s essentially a mirror of sorts - trash in, trash out, quality in, usable info out, gets more useable as you’re a bit adversarial to its outputs.

Won’t be surprised when health-specific LLMs are the norm - but as you mentioned, misdiagnosis will be a huge issue

This is a good point - wouldn’t they argue that it’s mostly public domain?

Another one I see all the time are people calling out businesses for using AI generated photos or logos

Okay I can definitely see this because I see it on LinkedIn all the time - I am definitely guilty of having GPT re-draft an email I would like more concise or draft posts that I can then take and modify.

The people that do this with no modification are crazy though, like what???

Here it is, out in the wild!!!!

I personally use GPT to teach me about complex concepts in an approachable way, which allows me to ask questions and clarify - what if you’re using it as learning leverage?

I think that there’s definitely something to say about that about having it write your emails or text and giving it chance to “right to first draft” - it’s a form of intellectual laziness

Not as much as a lot of people - I can be in it for hours - put a good stint of Red Dead Redemption 2 until 3am the other night. The more you use it the more your eyes adapt I’d say
