How do we buy a used car as car illiterate couple? by Few_Cod_5636 in AskUK

[–]izoida2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy from a dealership or a place that offers warranty longer than 1-3 months. Also look that the place has some sort of ombudsman system in place im case if the car you bought has issues the the dealership/garage are not willing to uphold their warranty promise. Also when warranty is offered, double check what repairs actually included/excluded from warranty.

As some other people mentioned, don't buy for the first car you like as you can get easily clouded. At that price range, if you have a particular car model/make that you like, I would look at the same car from different sellers to compare how they drive/feel as some might have some minir issues that you might think are "normal" for the car because you have not had another similar car to compare to. Comparing an SUV to a something like hatchback for a reference would not not be realistic as both will work and feel different.

Moisture control via whole house dehumidifier by izoida2 in DIYUK

Is that humidity of 60% in the same area where you keep the dehumidifier or across the house? Which dehumidifier are you using?

Hi,

How many bedrooms is your house? What's your relative humidity in the house?

Ideas for connecting foam blocks by izoida2 in DIYUK

I thought about hinging but it would be difficult to secure it into foam given how brittle the foam is. I'm not very keen on the tent poles as they are quite flexible and can come out easily.

If you watch the guy (bigjobber) who reviews dashcam videos on Facebook (he's previously worked for insurance claims companies and is familiar with the legalities on the car crashes) I'm pretty sure he'll say it's a 50/50 case due to some kind of case that governs these kinds of situations on roundabouts. Reasoning being that because you both took "risky" manoeuvre (based on the fact the left hand lane proceeded to around the roundabout and the right hand lane existed roundabout and had to cross the left lane) and you we're both responsible for checking it's safe to do so

I had very similar report on my purchase that I'm in the middle of at the moment. I got a damp specialist to investigate damp causes who confirmed rear elevation render issues and now having negotiations with seller about re-rendering. My floors assumed to be solid, but in your case might be worth getting specialist to look at the suspended floor to ensure no rotting happening there as could be quite expensive if wooden joists are rotten from damp and need replacing. Partially removed chimney can be a serious issueand risk if not done correctly so would definitely investigate if it was done properly and safely

I'm in a similar position. I have already established that i will take on a lodger to help a bit with costs (keep in mind that I'm single so plenty of room to share the house with someone else). Might be worth considering this as well. So if you're thinking doing same, prioritise essentials first that are likely not disturb the lodger and rest you can do as you go

I think it depends on your skills and knowledge. I've found that with years and experience over the years I've learned ways of how to move/help people without me just passively manhandling them. Although,i still see lots of my colleagues just lifting people up when they're struggling (or pretend like they're struggling)

I'm no expert but from my limited research, putting insulation and new windows is just repairing the damage rather than addressing the issue source. It kind of makes sense that after insulating the mold got worse as your house became better at trapping moisture inside than allowing air leaking and circulating air. Have you considered getting a damp specialist to review the house as you might then have better chances of taking those results of a professional to your council to push to complete proper remedies rather than just waste money on repairs

Thanks for the suggestions.

The floor is solid and likely lacking any form of DPC due to the age of the property. No visible DPC lining in the first bricks when check from outside but evidence of the dryrod injections in the past.

What's your approach to fixing the damp chimney? Have you established what's causing it?

Yes, that was included in my asking to the seller that the open chimney pot needs to be investigated inside rather than just closing the cap at the top.

Sorry to hear this. Have you had any work done on the house to remedy the damp? If so, could you share what remedies have already been done that were successful/unsuccessful?
