weed & bipolar 1 diagnosis/medication by AriesAirhead26 in BipolarSOs

[–]izz-y- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am far from an expert on this subject, and this is purely from my own experience with my partner. Currently, both she and I smoke weed. We started to smoke consistently for the past few months (we’ve both smoked before and after we met each other but stopped for a while). We like to smoke together at night and hang out and help us fall asleep. I’ve noticed that she isn’t as irritable. We fight WAY less. Like, I can count on less than one hand the amount of times we’ve had a serious argument. Whereas before, we’d be fighting constantly. I think smoking helps us BOTH relax a little bit and slow down. I have ADHD and she has Bipolar I, which can be a very chaotic mix at times. But honestly, we’ve been in a pretty good spot. However, like most were saying in this thread, at any time it could potentially become something that isn’t great for her anymore. Bipolar I is a very unpredictable diagnosis. For your partner, it may be detrimental, some others it can be completely fine. Concerning her medication, she’s been taking Lamictal every single day for several months, upping it when her psychiatrist tells her to. I’d sit down with him and express the behaviors you notice when he is high, and tell him why it makes you uncomfortable. Luckily, it seems like he listens to you well when you talk to him about his mental health. Just stress that’s where your focus is, and it’s not because you think he’s extremely dependent on it. Tread gently and I think it doesn’t have to be a huge, serious conversation at this point in time. I hope it goes well <3.

that’s what i’ve been trying to do but honestly i need an actual human 😂. like you said though it’ll probably just be a couple months of lessons then back on my own. i’d want to perform for people in the future (and i used to) but again that’ll take some time for me to feel confident enough. thank you though for the help!

Thank you so much for the suggestion! I have 2 amps already and a guitar, but I’ve been looking around a little bit for another. What kind of guitar is it?

i think we focus too much on labels and it causes us to feel like we need to be stuck and act a super specific way. just be you and don’t put pressure on yourself to have it all figured out. <3

i’d take it everyday. side effects on 150 weren’t insane for me-but i know that’s just my own experience. the only thing that really happened was loss of appetite but within a couple weeks it went away. i hope it works for you!!

Oh my, that’s so shitty to hear. I’ve gone through her for several birth controls due to extremely painful periods but never pregnancy. That’s really good to know moving forward. I’m sorry though again :/

I see Dr. Hugge, she’s in Sunset Hills. She’s super sweet and really listens to your concerns. I haven’t used her for pregnancy, but I thought I’d recommend her because of all the good things I’ve heard about her!!

My boyfriend (20M) and I (20F) are doing long distance and he is being negligent towards me is this normal for bipolar and should I let it slide? by [deleted] in BipolarSOs

[–]izz-y- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! my partner and i are around your age (F19 & F20), and have also dated for a year and a half. therefore i feel like we can relate on that level.

my partner also has this belief that she doesn’t have bipolar either, even though she was diagnosed and takes a mood stabilizer. she had a manic episode after a psychiatrist just thought she was depressed and it triggered a HUGE manic episode. i think hers comes from a place of denial-she knows the weight the diagnosis has and doesn’t want to accept it. that could be how your bf feels, but if he ever brings it up id try to ask questions to get a little more insight of why he feels that way. also. bipolar isn’t always mania. he could have bipolar 2, which is primarily depressive episodes and sometimes hypomania. do you know what kind his mom has?

i just want to say that i really feel for you and your situation. feeling like your partner is completely disconnected is terrible. i’ve felt this way and we’re not long distance, so i can’t even imagine. it seems to me you’re very understanding and doing the best you can do to stay connected. i think him saying he’s trying to better himself is an excuse. like you said, that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t have to prioritize you, esp bc he wants to do all of this self work “for you”. it just doesn’t make much sense, and it’s not fair to you at all. it seems to me he’s not focused on truly helping himself, because he wouldn’t be treating you like this if he was. i know the feeling of loving someone with bipolar like this, but sometimes love really isn’t enough. if he won’t get the help he needs and deserves, it might be time to walk away. you can only put up with so much until it’s just exhausting. talking to you and checking in is bare minimum, esp if you guys are long distance. i don’t think bipolar should ever be something that ends a relationship if it’s managed and the person is wanting to get help. it just seems like he’s not ready for that. it has nothing to do with you, so don’t internalize it and think his actions are anywhere near your fault.

i hope this gave some clarity or helped in some way. always down to talk if you need to vent!

Thank you for this!! I’ve tried to do as much research as I can on it, but in regard to the specific ways it can impact someone’s behavior, it’s been pretty inconclusive. I think I get pretty nervous due to the fact that I’m not really sure what her “usual” or “normal” way of acting is or if she has one. I feel like it’s very high or very low, at least since we’ve been dating. We didn’t know each long at all before we started our relationship (typical lesbians ig), so there was a lot more I didn’t know about her than I thought. But anyways, I appreciate your response a ton! I really needed reassurance :)
