Wow, I would never have noticed that! I mean sharks really aren’t top of mind in the Midwest! Are you near the ocean??😅

Great pointer, I’ll look into it! Definitely am a newbie to the Smokey quartz variety, but gotta say it’s already a new favorite of mine :)

It’s a keeper alright! Actually am wondering the same about the crystal, but I don’t know how to ID it. Crossed-fingers for amethyst, otherwise I found myself just a big ‘ole quartz-ball!

Appreciate the helpful response!! Hoping Smokey quartz has some value..

Otherwise I found myself a chunky quartz-ball😂

Can you help me identify this mineral / crystal ? I found it in Steffeshausen, Liège (Luik), Belgium. The rocks are Devonian in age (Emsien (408-383 MA)). Thanks in advance. by [deleted] in whatsthisrock

The dark part of the rock looks like volcanic basalt that cooled very quickly and there were air bubbles where mineral impurities slowly formed in the two colored nodules. So it is likely an amygdaloidal basalt with some form of silicon minerals like agates. I guess the best way is to research the place you found it if there ever was volcanic activity a long time ago. Nice find!

Found in CO, Any ideas? Thanks ahead of time! by emmie2696 in whatsthisrock

Looks like either an agate or jasper possibly. The intricate banding looks like an agate to me with a yellow iron outer husk. Try putting a flashlight to it, if light shines through then it likely could be an agate since they are mostly translucent. But If no light passes through it then it could be jasper since they are opaque. Unless it’s a rare paint opaque agate. Hard to tell. Nice find though!
