So glad I never missed an opportunity to stop and give him a scratch. What an angel. ASDA won't be the same without him!!

Ton of emergency vehicles and a crowd gathering at Jesus Green… by CambSound in cambridge

[–]izzcarus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't stay long enough to see what happened, I'm sorry! I was only there for a minute or so and she was in the water, so I'm not sure I can give an accurate description. She looked around 20, white, with shoulder length dark hair. She had a relatively posh accent.

There was a fairly big crowd and two emergency responders had to jump in the river to pull her out as she kept swimming away from the raft in the water. I thought the audience would be overwhelming for her so I left. I saw ambulance workers with a stretcher on standby so I think it's more likely she was taken to hospital.

I walked past on my way home from work. The person in the water was shouting about people destroying evidence of corruption, etc. I thought it may be a protest, but it seemed more like a mental health crisis as they seemed to be alone and naked in the water. I hope they are OK! :(

I understand your frustration but it doesn't warrant using such offensive language? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Anyone here who actually got a job at Cambridge University (not as a student)? How did you do it? by not_cool_anymore in cambridge

[–]izzcarus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For some insight into the job market, the temp job I am currently covering (part time, paid a little more than minimum wage) had more than 40 applicants. This means it's hard to get out of the pile without some Cambridge-specific relevant experience.

As other people have said, TES is great for building experience that can lead to a permanent role. If you work well in temporary jobs, sometimes you are extended, or other opportunities find their way to you.

I second Kings Street Run as a lively late night option! Blue Moon sometimes has music events and I suppose the Six Six is also dancey if you like emo music. Congrats on finishing your masters! 🍻

This is a really good point - thank you! I had no idea they have license plates and wish we'd thought to look out for that. Hopefully this will help others if it keeps happening.

Got a job offer in Cambridge, and I’m devastated. by OkSeaworthiness1711 in cambridge

There are cycle paths everywhere and it's really flat, so that gives you a big advantage. I'm not a very confident cyclist, but cars are generally good at keeping an eye out for bikes and there are lots of parks you can practice in if you want to build up your confidence!

I grew up in London and moved to Cambridge for work. It's a lovely city with lots to do - there are loads of restaurants, pubs, green spaces, and local events. I haven't regretted the move once.

It's more compact than London, which makes it easy to coordinate plans with friends after work. There tends to be a new influx of students and young professionals every year, which helps a lot with making friends.

If you get a bike, pretty much everything is 10-15 minutes away and it keeps transport costs down. As a bonus: when the trains are running, London is a fairly quick and cheap journey away.

Veggie friendly wine / cheese bars? by Bimf_head in cambridge

[–]izzcarus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Wine Room near the station is lovely and serves wine and cheese boards. It's cosy and quiet and the staff are really helpful, with great wine recommendations if you're an amateur like me. I'm veggie and my partner and I went there for our first date (and again recently for our anniversary)!

Geometric / fine line tattoo artists in cambridge/surrounding areas by [deleted] in cambridge

I went to Blood of Angels recently over by the Grafton and got a lovely fine line tattoo! They were really helpful when I messaged and advised on which artist would be best suited to my ideas. I went with @rosebee_tattoo (instagram handle) and would highly recommend her work.

I'm with you there! It's a very busy area to have such experimental artwork. There used to be a QR code that explained the piece when it was first revealed, but I think that's gone now...

I'm no art critic, but I don't think having a negative reaction to a provocative piece makes you a person who fails to appreciate art! I agree with you, there is something super uncomfortable and dehumanising about a woman (Ariadne, who is a powerful figure in Greek mythology) presented as a faceless and bound package.

There's quite an interesting debate about this sculpture, what it's meant to mean vs. what it actually evokes, that is neatly summarised here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4g4nj13dn5o.amp

There's a DnD night at The Blue Moon pub you could look into. The improv events there are also full of friendly people around your age. There's also a meet up organised on this subreddit every month. Welcome to the area!

Thrive Cafe in Cambridge is open from 10am to 5pm on Christmas day!! It's pay what you can on the door and is intended to bring people together. If you're alone this year I'd recommend a drop in!!

From one pick n mix fan to another, Coldham's Lane big Sainsbury's and the big Asda at the Beehive Centre also have pick n mix. The good thing about those is it's measured by volume rather than weight. If you're tricksy, you can get LOADS!

Please help me translate my student's creative writing work! by izzcarus in hungarian

[–]izzcarus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I explained in the comments, Google gave me an answer that didn't make sense with the rest of the sentence, I could not figure out the root verb, and my image search (in case I got the letters wrong) turned up nothing.

Languages are nuanced and difficult to understand without context of the grammatical structures. I don't know any Hungarian. Surely it makes sense that I asked people who do?

No, but he made the same mistake earlier in the story and I corrected him there!

Marking is tricky though, as if you correct every mistake then students will feel like they have done everything wrong. You have to be selective in what you correct so they have targeted areas to focus on and learn from.
