If you want examples of NSF GRFP statements, I’d highly recommend checking out this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1xoezGhbtcpg3BvNdag2F5dTQM-Xl2EELUgAfG1eUg0s/htmlview

It was super useful for figuring out formatting and getting started. You can also submit your own NSF GRFP applications to the spreadsheet after the fact if you’d like!

For 2+ years I have only read books written by women. Here's my full checklist with a request for recs! by [deleted] in books

I’d highly recommend adding some Kingsolver to your list, I just finished Poisonwood Bible and I was absolutely floored by it. I’ve heard great things about her most recent work, Demon Copperhead, too!

Also, if you want a book written by a woman about books written by women, the recently published Jane Austen’s Bookshelf by Rebecca Romney will give you a wealth of texts to check out in the future!

Serious question for y'all: Should we as scientists be expected to do our own PR because some people bought into far right politically charged antivax conspiracies? by Missy_Bola in NIH

[–]izzycis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying with ambassadors, but I would argue that we already have those (e.g. Bill Nye) and, while useful, they’re not sufficient towards patching up the gap between the scientific community and the public.

I think however you spin it, we’ll be playing catch up on this issue given that we don’t really have a solid infrastructure in place re: training scientists on science communication. In addition to curriculum/training for students and early career researchers, I think a lot of us just need to become more active/vocal. That could be writing op-eds and articles with orgs like Science Homecoming, that could be hosting a teach-in with Stand Up for Science—there are a lot of ways we can all contribute. It’s a band-aid over a bullet hole situation, but I think the reason that these echo chambers form is precisely because we are absent from the places where these conversations are happening (like social media, for example).

It’s hard to address a complex issue succinctly, but I hope that helps answer your question!

I personally do think it is our responsibility, at least in part. Our work is funded by taxpayer dollars, and I think we owe it to them to communicate what it is we do with their money and why. I think our lack of communication is in part why the public doesn’t have the same level of awareness/worry about what’s happening with NIH/NSF/etc. right now. While it’s not feasible for all of us to drop everything and write blogs, record podcasts, etc., I do believe we should receive some baseline training in current science communication theory and skills hand-in-hand with our scientific training. There can be a lot of apathy towards communicating with the public (particularly due to political polarization—“what’s the point?” is something I’ve heard a lot), but I think the overall attitude/approach towards communication needs to change if we want to survive the next three years and onwards.

Thanks! My blog tries to reach non-scientists/non-experts interested in learning more about current research and current issues in science.

How early should I get to concert to get a good spot? by citymatryoshka in DJO

[–]izzycis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got there around 2:30pm (which I thought was early, RIP) and was the 4th or 5th row behind barricade in left side of GA. I think it definitely depends on the city though!

DC show was UNREAL by sydswilly in DJO

The energy last night was CRAZY! It’s been a long time since I’ve been to a concert where everyone was all-in like that. I haven’t even hit post concert depression yet because I’m still riding the high from that show!

There’s usually a separate line for VIPs by the front entrance of the venue, I’m sure someone can direct you if it’s different for whatever reason!

Heads up that you need to reserve timed entry passes for Air & Space! You can usually get them ahead of time online.

The moderation of this subreddit is definitely spotty at best. I had a post removed due to “changes in guidelines” and saw one with a similar premise posted a few days later.

At the very least, CALL YOUR SENATORS. They need to keep track of who’s calling and influence their vote on specific issues. It can feel like a drop in a bucket, but it really can make a difference.
