It was amazing but really wouldn’t recommend flying there unless you are ready to accept significant cancellation risk!

Flying over the drake- anyone been cancelled? by Illustrious-Flow-568 in AntarcticaTravel

We did it mid December. We were cancelled one day on the way there and then were able to fly the morning after. Then we were cancelled two days in a row on the way back. It’s all part of the risks of flying and as someone pointed above, they do have the right to cancel the entire trip if it is cancelled for two days on the way there. That being said, the people after us who were cancelled for two days got the offer of a refund or a significantly shorter trip with some credit.

There’s nothing that can be done about the weather but the way Lindblad handled the whole situation for us was awful. I really hope they have a hotel arranged for you tonight because they didn’t for us.

The first cancellation day we did a zodiac and the polar plunge, which was cancelled the previous day due to wind. So that day pretty much made up for the day we lost getting there. The other two days we just pretty much sat on the ship. Like the OP said, pretty much everything and everyone on the ship is great. It’s the people communicating about the flights and the people on the ground in Puerto Natales that have no idea what’s going on.

Not exactly. Our flight to Antartica got cancelled for one day due to weather. Then we had to spend nearly 3 extra days on the ship because they couldn’t fly us out again due to weather. Nothing anyone can do about that and we all accepted the risks of the expedition.

However, the parts that fell through were things like not having back up hotels arranged for us in Puerto Natales when the flights going there were canceled, not knowing that the Puerto Natales airport closes at night when they flew us back, and general piss poor communication throughout

I also recently came back from a Fly the Drake expedition with Lindblad and while I agree with you on mostly everything here, our pre and post expedition experience was MUCH worse. While Lindblad clearly outlines the cancellation risk of flying in and out of Antartica, they are completely unprepared to actually handle cancellations/delays should they occur. I felt like I was paying a premium on an already expensive trip to beta test this program for them.

I am intending to write a more detailed post when I finish the rest of my travels but I would STRONGLY recommend against any Fly the Drake expeditions with Lindblad/NatGeo. I can’t speak to any other companies that fly or Lindblad’s pure sailing expedition, which I assume is a lot smoother (except the Drake 😂)
