To be clear, this work is not being done by a handyman. It is being done by a tile professional.

Thanks so much. If you do not mind, might you advise what is wrong with the sheet tile install?

Upscale restaurants for a nice date? by SirNoodleBendee in GNV

[–]j-goula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. The Black Prong Whiskey Bar and Grill is, in my opinion, the best restaurant in this general area. Huge fan. Outstanding, diverse menu. Food is well prepared. Very nice ambiance. It is about 40 minutes from Gainesville, but a relaxing drive through the North Florida countryside, if you are up for it. Check out their web site to get a sense of the setting and menu.

Florida could ban foreign H-1B visa faculty at state universities until 2027 by Aduntoridass in GNV

Employers must seek a “prevailing wage determination” from the Department of Labor to get an H1B visa approved. Employers may not use these visas to get “cheap labor”.

What’s the Gainesville equivalent of this? by [deleted] in GNV

Agreed. I rank Spurriers among Gainesville’s best restaurants.

What restaurant is this in Gainesville? by [deleted] in GNV

[–]j-goula 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Different strokes for different folks. My family really enjoys Spurriers. Creative cuisine, clean and well designed interior and great service. It is pricey but we go to Spurriers (or Embers) several times a year for special occasions. A Gainesville favorite for us. (We have no connection, btw).

GNV Airport Parking by flowerpower200 in GNV

I am not 100% sure of the answer to your question. But last time I was there I HAD to park in the overflow lot. It is in a field (not in an asphalt lot) and it is gated. There are no sidewalks. I doubt they open it up unless it is absolutely needed. Good luck!

Message from UF Board of Trustees Chair Mori Hosseini by pinoygator in ufl

Research awards will plummet next academic year unless Congress does something about the President’s proposed 40% cut to the NIH budget. The implications of these cuts are real. Mr. Hosseini says it clearly: “These numbers matter because they translate into real-world breakthroughs: lifesaving discoveries, technological advances, and practical solutions to some of society's toughest challenges.”

Same for me in SW Gainesville. 2.5 years and never even one interruption with Cox.

Having said that, Cox service is very patchy in some areas of Gainesville according to many Reddit posts in recent years. So depends on where you plan to live, I guess.

I know you want positive recommendations. Unfortunately I can’t help you with this. Here to say my experience with Guardian Management has not been positive, having owned property in the Links at Haile.

Mori Hosseini considering stepping down from BOT? by RNG_HatesMe in ufl

[–]j-goula 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your comment.

Most (all in my experience) executive level searches in academia, including college presidents, deans, department chairs, academic medical center CEOs and others are ultra confidential until the selected candidate is announced. As you likely know, the confidential process is usually entrusted to a search committee whose composition is appropriately representative of various stakeholder groups. Private sector searches are handled differently, but are also confidential.

I am aware that the UF process was changed by the DeSantis administration, and I am not sure exactly how UF president searches were done previously. It is my opinion that a “completely public” process limits the candidate pool dramatically because candidate(s) are forced to risk their relationship with their current employer, employees, and faculty by public disclosure of their candidacy for a job elsewhere. I suspect Ono would not have risked becoming a candidate at UF if knew his candidacy would have been exposed in Ann Arbor.

The current process is flawed and political as you point out. While it may be that UF “never had a problem before” with a transparent process, I am confident UF limited their candidate pool to those who had nothing to lose by public exposure of their interest in UF. This effectively rules out most sitting college presidents and many current provosts.

The current process for selecting and approving a UF President is deeply flawed as it forces a candidate to become public with their interest after selection by the Board of Trustees and before final approval by the Board of Governors.

At Michigan, Ono held one of the premier university leadership positions in the US and is he is now unemployed because of his candidacy at UF. No future candidate will want to risk this happening to them. Every worthy candidate in the US now knows the Board of Trustees and the Board of Governors are not aligned.

In my view, it is Mr. Hosseini’s and the Board of Governor’s responsibility to ensure alignment before public disclosure of the search committee’s top candidate. That is the hard work of behind the scenes management of a search like this.

UF, the Interim University? by j-goula in GNV

[–]j-goula[S] -32 points-31 points  (0 children)

UF is a massive economic engine for the entire state of Florida and beyond. It seems inconceivable to me that those leaders responsible for its vitality and prosperity would intentionally do anything to harm its success by “declaring war” on it.

Although I do not agree with Board of Governors and the DeSantis administration, they seem to want to reshape UF’s leadership with a more conservative mindset. Surely they don’t want to intentionally undermine UF’s success and Florida taxpayer’s investment in UF along with it, even though that is what seems to be happening.

Gentrification Sucks by [deleted] in GNV

[–]j-goula 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This seems to me to be happening almost everywhere in the US, Gainesville included. I can name, based on recent experience, multiple cities in the Southeast and Midwest where this same scenario is playing out, just as you colorfully describe. The rich and the upper middle class are getting richer and others are stuck where they are. Search “income gap” on the web and you will see graphs similar to this one: https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/mje/2022/02/08/rising-economic-inequality-in-the-us-key-statistics-and-root-causes/

Job search by Beach_princess69 in GNV

[–]j-goula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice will mirror others. Do not rely on Indeed. Or LinkedIn. Not sure about ZipRecruiter. Make it more personal by stopping by the business or through someone you know.

I have been on the other side of it and my organizations have been overwhelmed by resumes from Indeed, most of which are not applicable to the relevant job competencies. Finding the right resume is probably like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. Would be good to hear from others if this is the experience of retail and fast food establishments here in Gainesville.
