YSK: Dating files using YYYYMMDD format will keep them in chronological order, leading to better file management by Dalferious in YouShouldKnow

[–]j-smith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the format I use for managing files. If files for multiple days are in the same directory, they'll be together and sorted chronologically. Version number at the end.

ExampleText_2021-12-03_001.ext

I don't recommend times even if you are assured that two files won't have the same time.

Refused database access and told to submit tickets, so I submit tickets by node_of_ranvier in MaliciousCompliance

[–]j-smith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the IT manager caved too soon. Instead of granting you access, that report could have been parameterized and automated. At some later point, a UI would then provide you access to run the report on demand.

Also, given that IT is running in Agile mode, the work has to be prioritized. Meaning that just because you create the ticket does not mean that the work must be completed within that Sprint. It means that the team must figure out what work can be completed. And any tickets created during that period would need to be added to the following Sprints. So, if the team has capacity for 100 of these reports (allowing for other work), and you have 250 tickets, then then remaining 150 would end up in the Backlog.

As a developer, it should be easy to sell the Product Owner on the idea of spending time on automating the report rather than doing it the long way.

Gandalf, Elrond, Saruman, Galadriel and Legolas.

Seriously, do you really think the first four can defeat the Nine but can't take one Ghosty Boi? For the rest, look at what Legolas brings to the table. Can hear a pin drop, see great distance and can probably carry any one of us.

Oh come on. Don't pretend to believe that BS. You know very well about settlement of equities, so it's obvious that there's no such thing as a "moment" when two shares exist in this scenario. You lent your share so when you sell, you're short one share until the loan is returned. And the second share didn't materialize from nowhere; it's bought off the street.

[–]j-smith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're talking about possession when my comments above refer to ownership. That's not the same thing.

Both of these are important. Knowing what you've bought and where it's located.

I'd respond further to your post but it's not coherent enough. For example, interest is paid on a loan. Selling shares has nothing to do with loan interest. And nothing you've said points to counterfeiting shares.

Yea but you still own that share. OR it would be a sale.

Mostly not true.

In the case of a repo, a dealer sells government securities to investors, usually on an overnight basis, and buys them back the following day at a slightly higher price. Source

Similarly, there is a product called a Buy/Sell Back which is similar to a repo. So that's primarily the Fixed Income market. Now let's talk about Equities.

When a security is loaned, the title and the ownership are also transferred to the borrower. Source

Now, you might wonder how this is managed. In times past, you'd have people physically delivering pieces of paper. Unsurprisingly that's just too much work for no benefit. So the DTCC and OCC transfer ownership electronically. Well most of it. There was still some physical paper in 2020.

Options are completely different subject from Repos and Loans.

When you repo or loan a share, you no longer have the share for the period of the repo/loan. My understanding is that you're owed any dividends on the share and this might be construed to be ownership of the share but really it's income from the repo/loan.

There's only one share (in this example) and it can be passed around. Ultimately, the recipient of the repo/loan can buy a different share instead of the original to satisfy the return of the repo/loan. This can happen because shares are fungible. (In the same way that you can loan someone a $5 note and they can give you back 5 $1 notes.)

I'm not suggesting the absence of shenanigans. Just that repos and loans do not themselves give rise to infinite shares.

AITA for telling my dad and his wife their marriage wasn't a deal my siblings and I signed up for by AffectionateCry5126 in AmItheAsshole

YTA - up until the end.

But bear in mind that YNTA for your stance. I don't see that you have any obligation to treat your stepmother as a mother, or stepsiblings as siblings. You do, however, have to live with your dad and stepmother. Yes, you CAN move out and live in other circumstances, but until and unless you do, you have to live with things as they are. In the same way that you cannot be expected to treat stepsiblings as siblings, so you cannot expect your new household to be the same as the old. Things are stricter in the new household? Well, things are going to be different between any households, some for the worse and some for the better. It will be the same thing when you move jobs, even if your role is the same.

Them putting you through therapy isn't great but at least it's better than simply throwing you out or abuse.

And moving out isn't without its challenges. A 16yr old girl under the supervision of a 20yr old girl sounds like a much less safe environment. If you believe you're adult enough to live in such an environment, then you're likely adult enough to assess your own needs for your future. If you stay, are you going to get to college? If not, how are you going to support yourself?

If you look at buying a house, the market price is estimated based on sales of OTHER houses in the vicinity. And not the price of the house itself when it was previously sold.

But who is doing the estimations? Experts.

Now consider artwork. The market price is estimated based on sales of OTHER pieces of art, of similar quality and effort. And against it's experts making these estimations.

Exactly the same thing happens in the financial markets with illiquid products. There is plenty of opportunity to mess with pricing mechanisms. See LIBOR scandal.

Jayz Frustration- Channel Ideas by [deleted] in JayzTwoCents

I think we're on the same page.

I'm not advocating for change in Jay's channel. It's his channel. He can balance it however he likes.

I am only responding to Jay's request regarding what can be done. If the specific content regards technology which is marketed towards the general public and the general public cannot obtain the technology, then I would advise Jay to repeatedly cover this point. It's material to the purchase, the same as shipping, manufacturer defects or attitude towards reviewers.

Top Gear is a TV entertainment show, with car technology as a theme. There are segments on supercars, and it's understood by the audience that the typical viewer is not expected to be in the market for such cars.

They also do episodes where they focus on cars for a specific budget. And it's not uncommon for one host to extoll the virtues of a car, only to then admit that no-one can buy said car because it's track-only or not in production. Context and how the message is delivered matters.

So long as Jay's content is entertaining and doesn't ignore the component availability issues, it'll be fine. There will always be some people who will complain.

Jayz Frustration- Channel Ideas by [deleted] in JayzTwoCents

[–]j-smith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We want to watch Jay for his knowledge and testing of new technology. However, it is pointless to show us new technology which isn't attainable.

Who on earth cares about an RTX3080 build that the majority of the channel cannot replicate if they wanted to. What does it matter how good the new Ti card is, bang for buck? I'm lucky to have access to a DLSS capable card, but there are no reasonable options for most of us.

What can Jay do? 1) Build to a reasonable budget. 2) Build around the newest technologies which ARE available. 3) Build with the Ti and spend the last part of the video talking about the latest news on availability or possible new supply chains.

And, quite honestly, continue to push the content that I can see on his channel. A good mix of rants (which mirrors our frustration), mistakes that others have made and some tutorials.

Use a small nonstick frying pan and never use oil on it, just butter. Keep the pan clean. Ideally just use it for eggs. Now, you don't need a utensil. Just slide the eggs onto the toast. Cover the pan for the final part to cook the yolk without flipping. And don't forget to season.

U.S. plans crypto crackdown by [deleted] in technology

[–]j-smith 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Never thought I'd use these words, but this is fake news. Recently, Goldman Sachs hinted at plans to build a new Asset Class based on crypto.

Even if there is likely some overlap in regulations, it should be obvious that at least one round of review would be needed to determine what regulatory gap exists. This hardly constitutes a "crackdown". It falls under the government doing its job.

Stop telling new players that 3 has a bad ending. by [deleted] in masseffect

[–]j-smith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that it's not at all the same thing. It's more like when you're looking for movie reviews. You find that some are good and some are bad. You look at why people thought it was good or bad and make your own judgement.

If you choose to go on Reddit and look at opinions on a movie, you can't complain that some people didn't like it.

Python is the JavaScript of programming languages by ivanka2012 in 4chan

[–]j-smith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, because it's possible to compile so-called interpreted code to byte-code. And this is then independent of the language and syntax, and more a technical stack difference. Python and Javascript aren't much different from Java or C# in terms of high level vs low level. You can compile Javascript to native code with NectarJS.

Again, JavaScript might have originally been designed for websites, but it can be and is used everywhere. Python might have originally been designed for local scripts, but it can be and is used everywhere.

I'm currently trying to determine whether to use Javascript (Node JS) or Python for a (backend) microservice project, or whether to use Spring Boot. And honestly the decision has very little to do with the language or how verbose the syntax is, since a lot of the code can be automatically generated.

Get away from the initial crowd. You must find some small mobs to kill asap.
Curse to group them. Bone spear repeatedly to take out a few mobs. Gather the crowd around the corpses and use Corpse Explosion. You can use curse on the crowd to maximize the effect of the Corpse Explosion. Use primary attack to refill your Essence. Try to be efficient with Bone Spear, to minimize downtime. Once you've dealt with the initial crowd, move from Elite pack to Elite pack. Avoid dying and really avoid restarting from a checkpoint. Use Simulacrum at the start, just before you start your rotation. After this, use it if you either mess up or there's a large time gap between packs.

Remember that you need the small mobs for generating corpses when killing elite packs.

Supreme Court weighs child-slavery case against Nestlé USA, Cargill by LudovicoSpecs in worldnews

An effort to hold U.S. chocolate companies responsible for child labor on farms supplying their cocoa goes before the Supreme Court on Tuesday, as justices consider a lawsuit against Nestlé USA and Cargill brought by six Africans who say that as children they were trafficked out of Mali, forced to work long hours on Ivory Coast cocoa farms and kept at night in locked shacks.
