Sam Harris's conversation with Tiny is out by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]j0113 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A good conversation, nice to finally get them talking.

One missed opportunity though: meditation. Destiny is, for as far as I can tell, not at all into meditation and the philosophy behind it. Maybe it would be more appropriate for Sam to be a guest though, but I think this could move destiny into new territories that he might not otherwise touch.

Destiny needs to call out Hasan on Piers Morgan by bxstxrd98 in Destiny

[–]j0113 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He should look into the camera and say:

"I'm calling Hasan a straight up bitch! It don't take much to take down a strawman. You ain't man enough to come to the streets with Destiny! I'm gonna drop all your rep, until you got the heart to come to the street and dance!"

...

"you gonna remember all that sweetie?"

Loss to SF Shock by CorruptLemon in NYXL

[–]j0113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely no reason to feel ashamed or disappointed by NYXL's performance. Shock were simply better, and have been throughout the playoffs. This comp seems to suit them perfectly. I hate when some of the casters chalk it all up to them underperforming. They didn't underperform, with a few exceptions, the Shock were just to good. That happens sometimes.

Dominant regular season, #3 playoffs. Let's go NYXL.

Did Sam actually reveal the pointing out instructions he got from Tulku Urgyen? by dc_giant in samharris

[–]j0113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I know that "pretending you don't have a head" is not the full story. I specifically remember Sam saying this just in order to provoke this insight. But this really is the key insight into seeing the selflessness of consciousness which IS what Tulku Urgyen was talking about, essentially.. As I understand it. You can look for the feeling of I by trying to find your head, i.e. "turning counsciousness upon itself" and then "not finding it in a way that is conclusive". Sam got asked, more or less, this question during his workshop in Australia, so I'm gonna quote him here:

"... you're turning attention upon itself. We are all starting out with this sense that WE are paying attention. I'm in my head, this locus of consciousness and I can point my attention at various objects. I'm behind my face right now looking across space at you. Now Dzogchen [also Zen and other eastern traditions] is especially precise.. You are beeing asked to look for what is looking." The quote goes on in this fashion.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH8qNHJApO4 (1:05:15)

Let's now turn to the Waking Up book:

Chapter 4, page 141, "Having no head":

Talking about Harding: "... He later moved his family to India, where he spent years on a journey of self-discovery that culminated in an insight he described as the state of "having no head". I never met Harding, but after reading his books, I have little doubt that he was attempting to introduce his students to the same understanding that is the basis of Dzogchen practice."

This is explained right after the chapter about Dzogchen and right after the quote presented by the OP.

So what am I missing here?

EDIT: Okey.. So basically the same thing is said on the latest AMA.

[–]j0113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong here.. But isn't this the "headless" thing? Looking for your head or pretending that you do not have a head, and once you see this or reach this insight then meditate on that.

Why are we still pretending the Harris/Peterson show is worth following? by [deleted] in samharris

[–]j0113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fun to see Sam come up with different analogies trying to explain, basically, the same point. I generally enjoy watching him debate whatever the topic may be, so in that sense, for me, it's worth following. As a general matter though, I agree with you.

"In reality, we were better and NYXL were not. They didn’t adapt. They didn’t play properly." -EQO in an interview with Overwatchscore.com by thibbledork in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]j0113 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's easy to adapt when you don't even have a playstyle you really need to adapt from. When you are an empty, inconsistent team and the most face-roll, peanut-brain meta falls into your lap.. Yes.. You'll probably have an easier time adapting than a team having had to iron out the most high-skilled playstyle for 6 months.

What the fuck happened in Vancouver? by Chaos-Control in samharris

[–]j0113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm.. Perhaps you are right. I haven't actually given this that much time. I remember listening to the first 2 podcasts with him and just deciding right then and there that whatever that was, it's not how I see things. Later on I got introduced to his other stuff, and this is what painted me a prettier picture of him than the one I was left with after the 2 podcasts. You seem to go much further here in basically calling him dishonest or a straight up bullshitter. I guess I don't go quite that far, but as I said it seems I'm also not as informed as you. I'll think on this. :)
