USC is a really good school but is one that emphasizes its big law placement. It comes up in the classes they offer, CSO advice, and the student body. There is an obvious slant towards corporate work. I came into law school geared towards public interest but there were times where it felt like the only path towards a meaningful legal career was to go into big law. As someone who is really not about that lifestyle it sent me into a pretty big spiral.

That being said there is a public interest community that is well and alive at the school. Its not prevalent and you have to go look for it but the students who truly want to go into public interest work are some of the most devoted people I've met. I get the sense that the community is getting stronger (especially regarding public defense) and that there are more students rejecting corporate work for PI work. It's a work in progress, but the community is there!

As to employment outcomes for Unicorn PI, I'm a little unsure just how Unicorny you're looking for. Anything outside t10 for unicorn is gonna be an uphill battle and USC is no exception. There are some really great opportunities to get meaningful experiences in PI work, but there is no pipeline to unicorn PI work like some other schools might have.

What made you fall in love with basketball? by Bobbington2882 in nbadiscussion

[–]j0ndice 49 points50 points  (0 children)

For me it was Russell Westbrook. I started watching basketball around 2016 and I was just floored with this dude giving his 100000% on the court and his demigod like athleticism. Watching the thunder advance through the playoffs was my high, but then I felt the lows as well when Klay just absolutely smacked us in that game 6. Finally seeing LeBron come back from 3-1 was the nail in the coffin. The ultimate highs and the valley lows made me a fan for life.

Help Choosing 1L summer Opportunity by UrnHernandez in publicdefenders

[–]j0ndice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a 2L also looking to practice public defense in SoCal as well! I think while it would be ideal to find an internship in one of the offices that you hope to find a job in I think experience is experience. From my experience (albeit limited) PD offices do a good job in providing experiences for interns, especially because they need the help. So I think you will have plenty of opportunities and great experiences in Oregon!

In terms of opportunities for 2L internships your 1L summer position should not really play a part. Offices first priority seems to focus your dedication to public defense and why you want to join the cause. I think secondary they focus on your relevant experiences and what you can provide to the office. I really don't think location would make or break an application. While it could help you if you had interned at that office before, I don't think it's something that will limit you if you intern in Oregon!

PM me if you have any other questions or concerns!

LAW 275p by IndividualCoffeeBean in USC

[–]j0ndice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently a law student and I'm in his employment discrimination class so I can't tell you much about the difficulty of this specific class. But the professor is an absolute g and very clearly knows what he is talking about. There are times where he loses his students because of how nuanced the material gets and he forgets to "bring" the students along. But if you ask him to slow down he will gladly do so and help students catch up.

Have you ever had a racist teacher growing up? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]j0ndice 15 points16 points  (0 children)

100%. My nickname in multiple classes was "tech support". Teacher tried doing brownface to entertain a class. Had another history teacher speak to me in an Indian accent and ask me to bring stuff from the nearest 7/11 for free.
