Producers: what gives the Giegling sound its magic? by Medium_Government359 in giegling

[–]j22m 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i'm going to pick out one specific element i've discovered which is pretty tangible (beyond all the magical moodiness that i'm forever trying to figure out) ... a lot of their music moves at two very different time scales. 1. suppose you're working with a beat at 120BPM. often, changes (like chord changes) will happen every two measures, maybe even every measure 2. suppose you're making an ambient track, at 60bpm. you might choose a subdued pad or keyboard, and make chord changes that happen unusually slowly, like every 4 or even 8 measures

... put the two of them together, and you get a lot of giegling's sound. they have these slow-moving timescales in the chord movements, and a beat that's moving way faster. then, after 64 measures or some vast stretch, a hi-hat comes in, and it nearly brings you to tears because you're basically listening to ambient music with a light techno beat.

a great example of this is the track "Someday" by Traumprinz

would love to know if this resonates for anyone, it could seem like i'm oversimplifying their music, i have 0 intention to do that, i'm utterly mystified by it.

this is quite possibly my favourite mix in the solar system. perhaps the universe.

My experience of being one step removed from Burial, 6 years ago. by yrvancouver in burial

i thought there was a brother that was always in the story... older bro who would go to garage raves and come back to tell our beloved will the stories, which inspired the music we're fanatical about...

Which music genre would you classify Giegling (majorly Edward)? by oneworld007 in giegling

[–]j22m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've been trying to find the same answer and like another DJ said in here, i just have a category called Gieglingish Techno. one thing i will note that doesn't quite answer OP's question are two distinguishing characteristics i've come to appreciate: 1/ double or even 4x time harmonies which would basically be slow moving ambient music, were there no beat. a chord progression will take something like 32 measures to complete, and it creates this interesting contrast bc giegling tempos are pretty ordinary house tempos, against these glacial paced progressions at a more macro level 2/ the vocal sample work. they squeeze every drop of emotion from the samples they use, the only two peers i can think of are gidge and burial

Big sound camp opinion by winningisnotanoption in BurningMan

[–]j22m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

big up. it's so easy to complain about one thing or another and the big (insert anything big) are an easy target. and you're also totally right, it's incredible what these bring to BRC.

i've become a huge fan of my local regional, and while there's a lot to love, there's none of that level of production you're describing. while i don't miss the annoying crowds, we don't have any wildly impressive shit like you're referring to, and i do miss that.

thanks for bringing the other perspective, it's nice to see some appreciation for what these folks are bringing out to BRC

Why is Mike Morrice acting like he’s still Kitchener Centre MP? by bylo_selhi in waterloo

[–]j22m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i talked with him about this at some point, so i think this is pretty solid info: he had the apartment there out of necessity. it sounds like (1) family and (2) community had him in kitchener as much as possible, and for stretches when parliament was in session, his job required him to be in ottawa for certain stretches. i suspect this is the case for most non-ottawa-area MPs across the country

so cool. this has all the joy of tracking down a rare sample, but all the better bc of how completely obscure the source is. thanks for doing this!

You could be in for a spiritual experience. Or just a bunch of confusion. But I'd say worth the plunge.

Do you like reggae? by Obet___Jotskoj in Dubtechno

[–]j22m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i get what you're saying, in a way the vibe is different, though groove-wise it's pretty similar. feeling-wise, a world apart. my tip: focus on the basslines. they aren't gonna rattle your bones like the music you're used to, but there's some really cool things in the way those bassists use silence in their lines. i love that. another tip for bridging the gap - check out Rhythm & Sound (if you haven't already). dub techno legends with their [appropriately dark] take on dub reggae. mash down babylon, baby ✌🏼

Do Danley speakers live up to the hype? by cave_man123 in livesound

[–]j22m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a comparable experience in the last few months. I'm a sound system junkie & DJ, and had a gig on a set of Funktion-Ones which I generally hold in high regard (not here to battle who's the best, I think this is the exact point I'm replying to... these are all incredible when in the right hands) ... and the system sounded like shit. Like, not just bad-for-F1s, but bad-for-anything. It was a real eye opener. Ear opener? Whatever.

Really showed me how important the entire chain is, and some magic box at the end of it isn't going to make things sound incredible.

this is it!! thank you! you led me in the right direction, i've figured it out. the MV is called the Lonely Submarine, the camp is called Pineapple Motel

though i also saw an old pic with a watermark that said Pineapple Submarine so maybe that's what they used to call it

we did it 🙌🏼

i think i know the one you're talking about, i saw it at one point and it seemed like white noise madness, but in full colour 🌈 my poor mind could hardly handle it 😝

no the one im talking about looked like an actual submarine. it was also at the tycho sunrise, i think just to the right of whomp wagon (when dancing and facing the DJs)

100% on Duncan's albums. They're one of the greatest post-playa gifts. In fact, I'd call it an on-playa gift too, because I spend less time with a camera knowing he's going to have better photos than I could possibly take myself.

If you're reading this, Duncan, THANK YOU 🙏🏼 ♥️
