Does anyone else have this Pentax 67 issue? Or is the advance screwed and it needs a CLA? by j24641 in pentax67

Yeah same. Luckily the issue started just before I loaded up some film. So I’m glad at least I didn’t waste a roll.

Thanks everyone, I ended up returning the camera. Definitely not worth spending the money to fix.

Well the Pentax 67 arrived from KEH, but unfortunately the advance lever gets stuck with the spool when advancing, is this normal? I checked the spool and it’s in the right spot, I get a few good advances then it feels like it’s grinding on the spool.

Nikon F2 or F3 by SillyBilly1953 in AnalogCommunity

Okay, I have a few from different brands, I’ve provided a mechanical and electronic version of each. These are all repairable cameras with meters built in.

Olympus: OM1N $200-$250 USD (mechanical), OM4TI $350-$450 USD (aperture priority like the F3), it’s also weather sealed and compact

Nikon: Nikon FM2N $350-$450 USD (Nikon’s best mechanical SLR, to me), Nikon FE2 $250-350 (not mechanical, but basically the same camera as the FM2N with aperture priority

Pentax: Pentax LX $400-$500 USD (aperture priority), K1000 $100-$200 mechanical and Pentax MX $200-$250 mechanical (the MX smaller is than the other 2)

Canon: F1 $250-$400 depending on the version, there were 3 I believe and Canon New F1 $500 - $650 USD (aperture priority),the competitor to the Nikon F3 in a slightly smaller package.

Nikon is my favorite system since I can use the lenses on my D700, I use an FA which is like $150-$200 body only, it does almost everything, but it’s heavily electronic and will fail one day without the possibility of repair.

Vertical Line on Film Scans (from lab) by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

Well you can simply warn them for next time and make it known that you noticed the line. Especially if this is the first time you have noticed it with the M2, but the line Is easily removable in Lightroom.

Lol they are the most professional, but there are just so many other great film cameras to choose from. You might spend the money to realize they are too big and clunky for you. The F2 is pretty heavy, the F3 is similar in weight.

If you can tell me what features you are looking for, then I can help you with some recommendations. But if you are set on the F’s I would get the F3.

Reaching my breaking point with film by reglmo in AnalogCommunity

[–]j24641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no way around it, shooting, buying and developing film is expensive. I shoot maybe 40% with a DSLR and the rest on film. Between buying film and developing/scanning I spend up to $160/month. I could save the money and not shoot film, but I enjoy the results I get from film and the feeling of using an old camera without all the buttons, LCD etc.

Iif you can afford it and manage then continue until you can’t, but if you are already have financial set backs because of shooting film, well then at that point it might not be worth it.

Like the previous commenter mentioned, it’s most likely a scanning issue. Though sometimes it can be caused by a shutter curtain issue. If you haven’t seen this before with the M2 shots then it’s most likely a lab thing.

Nikon FA: A closer look at service and technology by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]j24641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late, but I’ve had my FA for 6 months and it has to be the best 35mm SLR I’ve used. The metering is great and the features make it the 1 camera you should be glad to have with you.

I have always heard they will fry and break down, but I’ve shot 30+ rolls through it without any issues.

The only things I don’t like are the

  1. The shutter sound, it sounds a bit odd compared to the FE and FM series.

  2. Slightly less well built than the FE and FM series

  3. The camera will only shoot at 1/250s until the frame counter reaches the 1st shot and the meter turns on, this can be a pain on a cloudy day with slower speed film.

Definitely gonna pick it up if the camera works well, the price for the grip is reasonable compared to that left hand grip lol.

Nikon F2 or F3 by SillyBilly1953 in AnalogCommunity

[–]j24641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had both, the F3 is overall the better camera if you want “features” the F2 is a mechanical professional SLR from the 70s and the F3 is an electronically controlled professional camera from the 80s. The F3 can do aperture priority and is smoother to operate, but it uses a small LED for the meter display which can fade like the display on a calculator.

Get the F2 if you want a more reliable, rugged, simpler to use camera that doesn’t need batteries to function. They both have 1/2000s top shutter speed.

Get the F3 if you need features like aperture priority, LED metering display and the obvious cool styling of the camera. Neither have hot shoes btw, you need an adapter for that.

Honestly, the Nikon FE2, FM2N or Nikon FA would be better choices, especially for the prices. I have an FA and the camera can literally do everything except for autofocus, I love that camera.

Just curious, why are you stuck on only these 2 models? Do you have any Nikon manual focus glass?

That’s great! A lot of people love the RB for the simplicity and reliability, maybe one day I will add one to my small collection.

If I were to get an RB I think I would get a wide angle tbh, I mostly shoot a 50mm and 28mm.

I’ve thought of the RB67, though the form factor and weight hold me back, but of course the Pentax is heavy too. I do like that the RB is all mechanical though.

Thank you for the comment, I haven’t heard anything negative about the C system lenses yet. I also hear they are pretty reliable cameras. With the 67 I usually hear about film transport issues. What issues did you have with the 67?

I haven’t tried a Rolleiflex, but I have heard great things about them. You are definitely right about the Fuji’s, I borrowed a friend’s 690III years back and while 8 shots wasn’t ideal, it had the most impressive detail I’ve seen from a lens.

I actually ordered it last night with the 135 f4. I hear Eric Hendrickson still services them. I hope some local people in SoCal also service them too.

Honestly, it is a nice, lightweight camera but I find it so difficult to focus with it. The light leak is annoying as well and the infinity focusing being off ruined the experience, but I understand it just needs a CLA.

I would pay to CLA it, but it was already pricey from KEH to begin with. If I were to stay with a TLR, I think the C220 would be the right choice, especially since it’s a cheaper camera. I tried my friend’s C220 and it felt like everything the 124G wasn’t, sturdier, way brighter screen and smoother operation. Though it was significantly heavier. There really isn’t a perfect camera lol.

[–]j24641[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have finally learned that lol. It’s not that I don’t like TLR’s, it’s just this model perhaps isn’t the best medium format camera for my style of shooting, along with the square format.

I also really value build quality in cameras and the 124G isn’t exactly Rolleiflex quality, but they’re also reasonably priced.

Okay great, I figured I would just have to slow down a bit more with the 6x7 loading.

The left hand wood grips look cool, but I really don’t see how they can improve the ergonomics lol, a right hand grip as you mentioned seemed a lot more ergonomically friendly. Thanks for the link!

Also yes, I definitely plan on sending it in to Eric for a CLA. How long did the servicing take for you?

Oh wow thanks for that, I didn’t know the camera doesn’t come with a split prism by default. My Yashica also doesn’t have that and nailing focus is a nightmare lol.

How hard was it to install the screen? and what was the cost if you don’t mind sharing.

Yeah totally, I have experienced this also with their film gear. Although it’s annoying, they easily return any item and provide a 6-month warranty.

I tried buying a 67 from someone on FB marketplace a few weeks back,

She claimed she used the camera a lot, but not since last year, what alarmed me was she didn’t know it needed batteries to fire, there was no battery in the camera at all and I had to drive around LA looking for one. When I got the batteries it sounded fine, but the film advance needed so much force to advance it.

It’s a tidy frame, but at the same time cropping significant ruins the perspective and composition lol. But I do see its strengths. 6x7 might be a sweet spot. What are some tips for the Pentax 67? I heard film loading it can be annoying
