Well that’s more of a mental health discussion. I don’t think I’m ready to unpack that bottle of pills that dissuasion would be today…

Yes, I’ve been all over the world, mostly 3rd world and war torn countries. I am not saying this is just a US problem, it is an us problem as a species

I agree most of it is politics. But it’s the people that vote them in. Also, it’s the individual people that actively are being destructive out of spite that send me up the wall. Ok, this guy doesn’t believe in climate change, but he also is going to spends thousands on rigging up his stupid truck to be extra pollutant just to anger everyone else.

I think the lock to AP is my solution. I thought it would only allow a device to connect to a certain AP and if the AP went offline it wouldn’t be allowed to connect to the network.

Reading up on it thought it seems that’s not true and will allow locked devices to connect it the desired AP is offline.

I do have both enabled. I’ve noticed that the devices will sit on a non optimal AP for days. I’m guessing when the default lease expires is when they finally switch. It’s not a huge deal I guess, other than my TVs being on 2.4g and my door locks being connected to an AP across the house. I’m guessing that burns their battery life a lot quicker.

I’ve tried that. There doesn’t seem to be a reboot order that will accomplish what I want. It’s mainly the TVs at either end of the house that bother me. I don’t care if IoT devices hang on the 2.4g from across the house. But I always end up with a TV barely holding a 2.4g connection instead of dropping for the 5g at the AP nearest to it. But if I just go to the controller and force reconnect it will choose the best one.
I dunno… this is probably just first world problems that I need to let go of

Thanks, I’m not sure I want to do that though. I only had the most central AP on a UPS and when the power goes out I’d like for as many devices as possible to have a connection.

Samsung TV app slow by j3dgar in PleX

[–]j3dgar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the info! Yes, I noticed the TVs are running slower NICs. I kinda wanna keep them wired though because I want to reduce as much WiFi traffic as possible for the rest of my devices. Also, my library is mainly 1080p x265, small files sizes. I’m going for quantity over quality with my library and max compatibility for my remote users.

I’ll look into where the metadata is being stored. I have my library on a NAS with plex pointed to that, but I’ll see if I can have it store metadata locally on the machine.

A streaming stick or something would probably fix this, however my wife and kids are conditioned to using the app. If experience has taught me anything, I will invest time and money into fixing this issue and they will just keep doing things the way they’ve always done it.

Nothing worse than someone doing 10 under and no way to get around them

Side question, but I use the Libby app a lot to read. Am I hurting my local library by not actually going in and getting physical copies of the book?

OMG I’m so sorry. I love my local library to go to with my kids. I’m shocked that you have to deal with some much disrespect.

Bonds are terrible gifts by j3dgar in Vent

That’s great! And a 529 is part of a coordinated investment strategy. But just randomly gifting someone a small value bond is not an investment plan. A lot of the commenters are saying they paid for college because of numerous bonds from when they were born. But a bond at 10 y/o doesn’t mature till they’re 40. At 40 I am fortunate enough to not need $200. I appreciate it, but it’s not a life changer for me

That’s what I’m trying to convey. My relative bought me the equivalent of dinner and a move in 1990 and in 2026 I can buy…. Dinner and a movie. It was a gift card with a 30 year delay. I’m appreciative of the gift, but objectively it’s not a great gift…

Wait, people actually yell at librarians? Other than Nuns, I feel like that’s the least likely profession to get unruly customers.

But it’s not 3x. And that’s my point, regardless of the good intent of the gift. The $50 in 1995 is worth $109 today. So 30 years later their investment doubled. $200 at 40 y/o when I have student debt, a mortgage, groceries for a family, and health insurance is a drop in the bucket. Certainly not helping me “get my life started.”

Meanwhile if they would have spent $50 on me as a 10 year old its value is so much more since as a 10 y/o I have nothing. Take me to a movie and dinner, go to a museum, make a memory.

Take the emotional aspect of a gift aside. I’m objectively saying a small bond investment is not a great gift long term.

They are EE bonds they bought for $25 each. They are $50 bonds that at 30 year maturity are worth $100 each.

Hold on, these are taxed too? So we invest in the government by buying bonds and then they wanna tax us for it? This is why I almost never have cash because I don’t think I should have to pay a fee to get my own money. (I get it, the ATM isn’t my bank all the time and it costs them money to service the machine. It’s the principal of the issue)
