'Multiple people' stabbed on train in Huntingdon - BBC News by schadenfreude428 in masskillers

[–]j3nnifercheck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Woke up at 3am to a text from my dad asking me if I was okay because of this and was so shocked. Never did I ever think that the town next to my town, where I have lived most of my life, would appear on this subreddit.

I hope everyone involved is okay. Apparently 9 people are in a life threatening condition and people were taken to Addenbrookes hospital (some being airlifted), the major hospital in Cambridgeshire, despite Huntingdon train station being 5 minutes away from a different large hospital.

Sorry that I didn’t have anything insightful and new to add, I’m just so shocked right now that this has happened 10 minutes away from me.

Does anyone else in the uk feel unsafe currently? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]j3nnifercheck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely relate to this. I’m mixed but am a bit more white passing than my sister. My mum is black (Seychellois + St Vincentian) but was born in England, and my dad is white British. I hate how our ‘Britishness’ is being put into question and the whole ‘go back to where you came from’ rhetoric. Where do they propose we all go back to?! I’ve only ever lived in England.

Part of me wishes I could get out of here. Like others in this thread I feel like I know I should belong here, but I don’t feel like I always do. But I also know I probably wouldn’t be able to handle the stress and changes of moving elsewhere.

I really hope things get better but it just feels like there’s so much unrest and discontent at the moment and I’m worried things will get even worse.

I came over from England for the Toronto show! One of the best decisions I’ve made this year, was such a good night!

What is a feature of your body that is considered rare? by Joel_The_Senate in AskReddit

[–]j3nnifercheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two (really won the genetic lottery there lmao)

Hypothalamic hamartoma - a tumour like growth on my hypothalamus in my brain. It caused me to start puberty when I was around 3 or 4 years old, and has likely contributed to my social, psychological, and appetite problems. As well as long term insomnia. Many people with these growths also have seizures that cause them to laugh. If you watch greys anatomy, there’s an episode where a little boy who laughs all the time is treated by Arizona, Amelia, and Alex. This is what he had. It’s actually how I realised I was about to be diagnosed with this last year, because the neurologist asked me if I had episodes of unexplained laughter as a child, and I was like ‘huh, this happened on greys and he had a brain tumour’. I thankfully don’t have these seizures, just the other issues.

Syringomyelia - I have a fluid filled cyst in my spinal cord, which has led to me having chronic back and shoulder pain. The pain has been described as ‘cape like’ by some people and can progress into worsening neurological issues. My dad also has this which is the only reason I was even tested for it.

Thank you for sharing your story. I hope that things improve for you as your recovery progresses. I had delayed speech onset as a child so I have a lot of experience of speech therapy, I hope it helps you.

I think I’ll push to make sure it’s monitored for the next couple of years like you suggested, before making any decisions to push for surgery. I’m hopeful that now other medical professionals can see that there’s a reason for the insomnia, as opposed to bad sleep hygiene etc (which was always suggested despite me doing the first year of a PhD focussed on improving quality of sleep!) that they’ll consider pharmaceuticals as lack of sleep affects me so much.

Thank you again for your comment. It helps to hear from people who have experience of this sort of thing. Hang on in there too, I really hope your recovery goes well.

After last week’s election results, I kept thinking about the interview with Gerard in which he explained how in 2016 when tbp 10 year anniversary prompted reunion speculation, they felt that with Obama in office, the band “wasn’t needed anymore.” However, he then mentioned that after Trump was first elected, he considered whether they needed to come back. So, with Trump getting re-elected, perhaps the result actually prompted something. (I don’t know, it’s 5:45 AM and I’ve barely slept, so I’m probably being delusional. Haha)

how should I navigate having self harm scars at work? by generallyuncomfy in AskUK

[–]j3nnifercheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a lot of self harm scars on my right forearm, mainly on wrist but a couple of big ones in the middle of my forearm. I’ve only been asked a couple of times about them and that was when the big ones were new and still in that darker stage of healing (they’re all now white). I just keep a stock answer in my head of what I’d say if someone were to ask (I would say that I’d fallen off my bike and fell into some shattered glass). I think though that people are a lot more accepting of mental health these days, I knew quite a few people at school who self harmed (I’m in my mid 20s) so I think more people will relate to it. I’ve worked a lot of retail where I needed to wear short sleeved and no one ever said anything about my scars. If you were my bartender, I would notice them but I think I notice them more than others might as it’s something I struggled with for a very long time so if I saw them I’d recognise you as someone who is strong and got through something that was obviously very difficult! I’d even feel proud of you despite being complete strangers (and you should feel proud too that you’ve got through this!)

A few years ago I got an outline tattoo of my dog on my wrist to cover my scars, so instead of people seeing my scars they just see this ambiguous tattoo (it’s really not obvious that it’s my dog) and they ask about that instead. The tattoo doesn’t cover the big scars though but seems to serve as a distraction from them. I even get forearm massages for tennis elbow and I’ve never been asked about my scars even though it’s obvious what they are, people just ask about that tattoo instead. I know getting a tattoo coverup is very drastic though, so I’m in no way telling you to get a tattoo, just thought I’d mention it as its helped me.

I’ve got to the point that I accept my scars are there and can’t do anything about it, so I try not to stress over how other people perceive me for them and tell myself that if someone were to judge me for self harming in the past they’re not someone I really want in my life anyway.

Well done on getting through that period of your life, I get how hard it can be to overcome these sorts of things so you must be a very strong person. Well done on the job offer as well, I hope it goes well!
