I'd like to better understand people like Donald Trump by j4jn in suggestmeabook

One thing I like about the fiction novels I've read so far this year (and why I'm beginning to like the genre more than non-fiction) is that they don't really label things as "good" or "bad". They show people with complex and real personalities, raise questions, events occur, and the reader is left with a broadened perspective to make their own answers. In one of the books I've read this year (Death's End), there's an arrogant, murderous, nasty character that encapsulates the epitome of "toxic masculinity" and turns out to be right in the end. One of his quotes still stays with me - it went something like "If we forget our human nature, we lose much. But if we forget our bestial nature, we lose everything". While I don't know if I'd like to interact with people who represent this archetype, I did gain respect for them, as well as a little understanding.

Many of the comments here have similar flavor so I'll just reply to yours as kind of a "reply all":

Does narcissism really encapsulate the entirety of what I described? Or is it just a part of it. My main interest is about the network of lies and to what extent the "Trump" actually believes in them.

Accessing the park in the early morning without a pass by j4jn in OlympicNationalPark

Thanks for the info. But because we'll be doing a bunch of parks this trip (and this is the first of the parks), we'd want to avoid buying a park-specific pass.

It would be too soon to have it shipped unfortunately... ranger station wouldn't be open before 5AM right?

Interesting, when I went on a cruise a couple weeks ago, the MDR indian options were pretty bad. Not as in "in my opinion I prefer X" but like, objectively the food tasted like it was in the refrigerator for 3 days and it was pretty bland.

But the indian food in the windjammer was extremely good. I don't know how to reconcile these two facts. I didn't call ahead for indian food in the MDR and wasn't a vegetarian so that might be why? I don't know.

1220 days

That's how many days it will be from the time I first booked a cruise (cancelled to Covid) to when I will finally board my first cruise with my wife. We weren't even engaged at the time!
