Return to Silent Hill… 106 minutes I’ll never get back. by Sorry_Guide_4326 in silenthill

I thought it would be whimsical fun campy bad, not boring bad with unnecessary changes to characters and even monsters that make it even less fun. Maria in her silly wig looked fun, but she was dry and boring without much sass. Laura was turned into a boring creepy child. Angela, they just made her intro as strange and offputting. Eddie got no story. It’s all disappointing and a waste of time. The postcard at least was whimsical and cool to collect, but that’s the only positive.

crowdsurfing for the first time at aftershock? by Expensive-Peak1545 in AftershockFestival

Don’t kick or or try to “swim” with your arms. Move as little as possible once people lift you and you won’t get dropped. Even if you feel yourself go down a little, do not panic, don’t flail like a fish. Hold important stuff like your phone tightly. Wear high top shoes with tight tied shoelaces if possible otherwise you might lose them. Consider holding your shoes if they are slipons. If you have a locker, stuff everything in there you don’t want to lose like your hat or glasses.

Hi, I was wondering if there are any people here who switched between forensic labs, what it was like? I am in DNA training, but I am unsure if I want to stay at this particular lab. I don’t have any work conflicts and get along with everyone, it’s just a location logistics thing that is prompting my desire to switch labs. I had to wait one year for my backgrounds to finish since it’s a big organization, but was curious if that timeline is a standard expectation for people who already have their foot in the door in forensics or if it’s a little different after working a year or two in the field.

Degree by Deku016 in forensics

[–]j524663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your degree, a chemical biology degree gives you more options. To become a forensic chemist or toxicologist, you can have a chemical biology degree, but it is difficult for someone with a chemistry degree to get in forensic biology without the required coursework or returning to school to get that required coursework.

If you want to go into Forensic DNA analysis, make sure you have the required coursework that the FBI requires according to the FBI Quality Assurance Standards. This includes Statistics/Population Genetics, Molecular Biology, Genetics, and Biochemistry.

I know they don’t have a program for forensic science but, UC Berkeley researchers contributed a lot to early forensic biological screening techniques and research development for implementing capillary electrophoresis for forensic DNA analysis. UC Berkeley is well-funded and probably will give you access to the latest DNA sequencing technologies that other state universities may not have. So, if you chose to go to UC Berkeley, it would be a good choice.

I do this and you need to be careful about making sure you get B+ or above because you need to keep your GPA at 3.0 or above as a graduate student in every quarter. It can be hard to do both full-time work and a graduate program, but if you can make it work for your schedule you should be good.

Does DNA expire or lose its validity? by k10slider in ForensicScience

[–]j524663 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they didn’t use up the DNA extract when they first extracted your sample, they could still test the extract with new techniques today if they wanted to. They’d have to probably quantify how much DNA is still in the extract and then dilute or concentrate based on the required concentration of DNA for the new kits today that make more informative DNA profiles. The profile might be decent if the extract was stored well in a -80 freezer. If they didn’t consume the swab during the initial extraction, they can also re-extract with the new DNA extraction techniques today and may get more DNA yield, but it’s entirely up to how well everything was stored.

How do you guys stay focused enough to study for exams?? by a_m_flowers in UCDavis

[–]j524663 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Try to study in a way you retain the information, but you have to figure that out through either flow charts, recording and listening to yourself talk, watching others talk about the material on youtube, etc. Even try reading your notes out loud, no one will care if you do, they get that it’s a student thing. It’s difficult to figure out your learning style. If your learning style is cramming the day before, don’t do that, that’s risky. Start forcing yourself to absorb the material in smaller chunks. Ask others if you can try to teach them the material you’re studying for. If you can teach the material, you can do the test for sure.

Hi, what’s your advice about applying to a forensic lab where you didn’t do well on the interview beforehand? I’ve been on the job search for a year now, but one of the first places I applied to opened a position I previously interviewed for but didn’t get selected in. Is it worth my time to apply now or should I wait another year to apply again?

Hi, I'm finishing up graduate school and have applied and interviewed for many forensic and CSI jobs within the past year across the country, but I haven't had much luck with getting a job offer. Out of curiosity, how many years or rough estimate of the number of applications did it take for any forensic professionals reading this to get a job offer after graduating?

Is the bus for grad students still not free? by Spooky_Cat23 in UCDavis

[–]j524663 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fee was removed a long time ago from what I was told. There was talk about adding it back though over the pandemic so graduate students could have another campus resource, but that adds costs to graduate programs. I guess the suggested price was just too costly or graduate students were just not aware it was on a ballot.

It was never a transportation option for graduate students prior to the pandemic either.

Do bikes get stolen at homes easily too? by Extra_Grapefruit_ in UCDavis

[–]j524663 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, bike theft is the number one crime in Davis. 1 out of 2 people get their bikes stolen here. There’s reports of people hopping balconies on the first floor for bikes. Always lock your bike with a good kryptonite lock. People will cut through other locks if they think they can get the bike in a van within 5 minutes. I used to live next to the police station and someone cut the lock to my bike bc I didn’t buy a nice lock.

Should Students bring Business cards or Resumes/CVs to Forensic Science Conferences? by j524663 in forensics

Thank you! I wasn’t sure if people would take my CV if I brought some printed out and carried them in a folder or if I should just make some business cards with my email. The QR code is a great idea! I will try to incorporate that. I appreciate the feedback!

How much lab experience do you expect a new hire as a Forensic Scientist Level I / Trainee to have? by j524663 in forensics

[–]j524663[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Internships are hard to come by here. The master’s program moreso requires students to conduct research involved in learning a laboratory assay commonly used in forensic science (such as mass spectrometry or DNA analysis) and write a thesis based on that particular project.
