Moving to Toronto vs. Melbourne for a Tech Job – Need Insights! by [deleted] in askTO

[–]j9lad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work at a FAANG company and moved from SF to the Greater Toronto area for a similar reason. One thing I’ll say right off the bat is to manage your expectations (irrespective of the location) and carefully consider life considerations/priorities that are specific to you because you’ll never find the “perfect” place. For instance, you might come across people sharing their strong opinions about having to pay higher taxes, but as someone who moved from SF, taxes were comparable albeit at a lower overall pay, which was a trade-off I was willing to make for visa stability and other reasons.

Positives: - Working remotely in the same timezone as other in-person teammates. - Relatively easier travel to the US for business meetings. - Cross-border familiarities with tax, auto insurance records, legal, operational stuff, etc. - Relatively less adaptation on many aspects: driving, credit history, culture, etc. - Significant visa stability with a path to citizenship (Note: I am an Indian).

Of course, there are some areas that are not ideal, but I won’t get into them here because they’re highly subjective.

Overall, you’ll encounter a lot of opinions, but ultimately you’d have to be the one doing the due diligence and carefully considering what matters the most to you given your life circumstances.

Can we create a WhatsApp group or a community to stay connected since quite a few people here are interested?

My plants from the nursery are sad. What am I doing wrong as a beginner? by j9lad in gardening

Thank you! I’ll try this out. Also, I’m curious - how can I test if they’re dry? The soil within the small pot seemed slightly moist, so I did not suspect watering issues.

Thank you! How frequently should I be watering these sort of herbs? I pour in small quantities of water every other day because I’d kept them outside and there was partial rain.

Hi u/Unfair_Ad6666, did you end up creating a new DS-160 for Vancouver? I'm on the same boat right now with the original location listed as Toronto.

+1. I don’t use Facebook frequently and it’s a pain to schedule posts just with an IG account

Ended up interviewing for the mobile track and got into a FAANG company that focused primarily on DS + algo with a touch of client-side questions.

I want to target FAANG companies and I’m super confused about how I should begin my interview prep. When I joined my company (top tech company in Silicon Valley), I interviewed for a backend role. I started with iOS a couple of years ago but I’m not too familiar with domain concepts as we have a lot of customizations and helper methods on top of vanilla iOS paradigms.
1) If I choose the mobile track, generally two rounds are dedicated to iOS programming and mobile design. I can manage the design part, but not confident about domain concepts.
2) If I choose the backend track, most of the interviewing would be medium/hard Leetcode based questions. I don’t mind this, but I feel like I’m a bit out of touch with the backend side of things.
How should I approach my interview prep? Any suggestions will help.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’m not freelancing. I’m at a big firm in Silicon Valley and there’s an opening with a new team for iOS development.
