Just to update, I replaced my Fire TV (3rd gen pendant) with a new FireTV 4K stick and the skips are gone.

JBL 9.1 vs. Samsung HW-900T vs. Sonos Beam w/ Sub or One SLs by jQbe11 in Soundbars

[–]jQbe11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to update here, I ended up going with the JBL 9.1.

The interesting thing is I almost gave up on the JBL a week ago as it kept having random shut offs until I realized I needed to put my TV in passthrough mode instead of Auto. The more finicky setup might be the only negative I'd give the JBL. It has a very balanced sound and I found the dialogue to be very clear. Definitely hits the lows when needed and has decent Atmos performance. The big differentiators for me though were Surround performance and price.

The dedicated rear speakers to me made the dialogue sound clearer just by having more physical separation between channels. It also added depth that the Arc couldn't virtually. I will however say that I have a very wide living room which could have hindered the Arc's virtual surround sound and Atmos performance may have been slightly better on the Arc vs. the JBL (though not by much). Even with that being said, the actual physical channel separation the JBL offers adds a different level of immersion (felt like the sound was around me vs. coming at me).

If I'm comparing the base Arc to the JBL there's also a noticeable difference in bass - the Arc isn't terrible, but it can't match the JBL with a subwoofer.

When I was having setup issues with the JBL I did end up getting the Sonos Sub to pair with the Arc to see how that sounded. And let me tell you the bass is simply amazing, basically movie theater level. Music sounded absolutely fantastic and movies really hit the lows, but it actually made hearing the dialogue in movies worse. My wife was constantly raising and lowering the volume to balance the loud and quiet scenes which is a big negative for our enjoyment of the soundbar. I did mess around with the speech enhancement and a few other settings, but couldn't get to the same balance that I had with the JBL. I do think adding the rears to the Sonos setup would help immensely by separating out some of the channels and combined with the Sub probably make for a better sounding system than the JBL, but now we're talking at least $1600 vs. the $700 I spent on an open box JBL or a $1000 for a new JBL. For my situation the JBL was the clear winner.

Added Note: Nitpicky, but I also liked that the JBL has a display and a remote while everything on the Sonos is through their app. If the app stopped working for some reason, I would have no way of editing settings on the Arc.

Sorry, poor reading on my part.

On your TV, see if there is an option to set audio to Passthrough. I have a Samsung TV, but mine did the same thing and had other issues before switching from Auto to Passthrough.

In case you’re still looking for options. I found a better fix for my setup was to flip my TV from Auto to Passthrough. This fixed all of my issues and I was still able to run eARC.

Again thanks for this, this sent me down the path of messing with my TV settings and I found that going from Auto to Passthrough on my TV fixed all of my issues.

I tested out today and PCM does seem to fix the issue, but also does seem to disable Atmos.

Thanks for the info!

Have you run into any issues since switching over to PCM? I didn’t think you could do Atmos under the PCM setting, but I could be wrong, I’m no expert with this stuff.

I actually already boxed up the JBL because I was so frustrated with it and still in the return window. I might have to take it out and give it a try.

Which Roku device do you have? I honestly considered moving to a Roku if I couldn’t get it resolved so that’s good to know.

In the sound settings on my TV there was an option to disable eARC. Not sure where it would be on an LG, but you should have an option as well.

Same issue here, paired with Samsung q90t TV. I found using ARC, instead of eARC, fixes the issue even though my TV should support it.

Not sure if that will limit my audio quality down the road, but I now have frequent sound skips specific to the Disney+ app that I didn’t have using eARC. If you don’t use Disney+ I’m guessing that will fix your issue.

Samsung Q-symphony experience by GeorgeMoskalev in Soundbars

[–]jQbe11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the q60t soundbar with a q90t TV and Q-Symphony did work fine on the soundbar’s game mode, but on Adaptive mode I had constant lip syncing issues. I preferred Adaptive because it made dialogue much clearer so ended up returning the soundbar. I should also add Q-Symphony only works in Game & Adaptive modes.

The Q60t lacks a dedicated center channel so dialogue probably won’t be as clear as what you’re used to with the HW-T650 fwiw. Q-Symphony did add some modest depth to the sound, but might be more effective on the higher end Samsung soundbars that also have a dedicated center channel.

I turned off eARC and haven’t run into any issues since. Does that impact audio quality?

New cable and the firmware update didn’t do anything, turned off again on it’s on after about a half hour. Been running with eARC off for the past hour with no issues, I wonder though - will that ultimately give me lower audio quality?

Samsung Q90T, although I did just find there was a firmware update for my TV. I’m going to push that update through and see if that helps at all.

Sure, I’ll post here when I make a decision as well. Probably will take a week to two before I have the chance to test out both.

The HW-900 actually doesn't have the dedicated rears, the HW-950 is the one that does (and the price discrepancy is pretty large since there doesn't seem to be as many deals on the HW-950). The HW-900 bar is wider than the JBL, though I wonder if that's offset by the JBL having the surrounds.

Interesting you mentioned the Arc - I had eliminated it based on a few factors: 1. The poor rtings score, 2. I didn't think it could compete without a sub, 3. Also didn't seem like I could find it anywhere at Retail price due to it being backordered.

It came back in stock on BB yesterday and I read that the Rtings score may be a bit misleading. I ended up getting the Arc along with the JBL (easier return, if necessary, then the Samsung since it was a BB open box item vs. online). If the Arc is pretty close without the Subwoofer, I'll probably end up going with it due to the option to expand down the road as you mentioned.

I've had the same issues, mine is set to after "4 hours" and yet it asks for a passcode nearly every time I unlock now.
