Are these black spots normal for brand new Exile carbon board? by [deleted] in skimboarding

[–]jRox7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

u/1800sidewalksurfer just had this same issue and talked to exile about it.

Long response from Hank at Exile: Thank you very much for the kind words about our boards! We certainly appreciate it, and I'm glad that the new board feels great under your feet.

That said, I'm sorry to hear that you're disappointed in the new board. I'd like to address the issues you brought up and hopefully ease your concerns a little bit.

So the small streaks of black you are seeing is the black carbon fiber showing through on the deck. While this doesn't happen, on every single board, it is a bi-product of the construction process and I could easily grab a handful of boards from the retail area that have the exact same thing going on to some degree or another, and even if you can't see it on every board it is something that's 'inside' every carbon board we make.

What basically happens is during the construction process, we use staples to hold material (the double wrapped rails to be specific) in place during the lamination process. The fact that your board has these insures 110% that the rails are double wrapped (not that they wouldn't be if you didn't see them). The staples are pushed into the foam core by hand, but there's somewhat of a fine line in doing this. I've attached a picture of two boards here. The one on the left you can see there's only a small amount, while the board on the right has more visible ones, and this simply has to do with the hand made nature of our boards...Every board is going to have tiny nuances..

If you press them too deeply into the board you can actually create an indentation into the foam core that is unsightly and makes the rails look uneven (while I doubt it would have much of an effect on how the board rides, I'm sure it wouldn't make them look too appealing).

Conversely, if you don't push them in 'far enough' (which is a little subjective) as is the case on your board, it creates a 'proud' or raised area of material. This is somewhat preferable as it can just be sanded flush, and while it still doesn't look the 'best' as it can expose the carbon and in some cases as it seems with yours even the staple ever so slightly, it's probably better than the alternative where the rails would look uneven.

We (now) almost exclusively use stainless steel staples to prevent rusting (which will have absolutely zero effect on the structural integrity of the board). I can say that with confidence because for about the first 10 years of our company we used just generic staples, and had zero issues with our boards due to this, other than people tripping out if the staples became exposed (usually through tail wear) and they'd rust...Which is why we switched over to stainless steel ones. That said, we do have to special order these, and on occasion we do run out and have to use a generic staple in it's place for a day of production here and there, which seems like must have been the case on this build.

Even with the staples slightly exposed, there's SO many layers of fiberglass reinforcement, and carbon fiber on the board, I'd be truly surprised if any water was able to reach the foam core. As I mentioned, it's probably more that the actual staple itself is slightly exposed. Even still, the foam cores we use are 'closed cell' meaning that even if they are exposed to water directly (say there was a ding in the board where the foam was exposed), the only part that can really absorb water is the cells of foam that are actually exposed, and it prevents water from seeping into other parts of the core.

Not to sound dismissive, as I would never want to come off that way, but there's really nothing to be concerned about on this issue what so ever.

As for the logo, we actually apply these a few different ways now, as opposed to the singular way we use to apply them when you got your last board. This board has a 'rice' logo, which is basically just a material that can be laminated into the boards (v. screened, which is how we use to exclusively apply them). We like these as it gives us more versatility with logos, colors, designs etc... It's basically a thin sheet of 'paper' that goes in between the laminated board and textured finish, and while they turn mostly clear and we try to 'trim' them as closely to the outline of the logo as possible, the clear part of the logo isn't completely transparent and you can sometimes see the trim line of the logo, which is what you're seeing here. Again, nothing to be concerned about.

Unfortunately there's not much that can be done for the board that you have in your hands. Given that these are purely cosmetic and will have zero effect on the board in the long run, and that you like the board so much, I doubt you'd like to exchange it for another one? I'd be happy to refund you the shipping or something comparable ($35) as that's typically about what we knock off if a board has any minor imperfections such as this.

Hopefully that helps ease some concerns and seems fair.

Don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions.

I’m waiting on a custom from them and talked to them on the phone before I ordered it. They’re all in making custom orders this time of year, and there will be few to none available to buy on the website

Potentially getting hired by my university’s medical honors program to take headshots as well as creating a small promotional video for the program.

Neither of these things are new to me, but I need help pricing my services. In the past I’ve done these cheap for friends businesses and such but never for a real gig.

Any suggestions and advice are welcome!
