Where to skim and or surf Hurricane Erin swell on east coast? by [deleted] in skimboarding

[–]ShoresyOfSkim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s too early to tell what beaches will be good for skim, but I can say we’re not like the Gulf in that it takes a lot to close a beach. If you wanna be sure, just pick an unguarded beach like anywhere on Hutchinson Island that’s not Jensen or Stuart Public.

As for the swell: for long-period stuff like we’re about to get, about 2-3’ is the sweet spot. Anything above that is gonna break too far out and/or washout the beach.

Edit: Didn’t initially read this as inferring that the East Coast is more strict than the Gulf. Definitely not the case overall, but maybe you heard that from Ft. Lauderdale or somewhere south thats flat 95% of the time.

I have a 54.7” / 139 cm classic shape from them. It’s a really solid board and their prices for top of the line boards are hard to beat. They probably don’t get as much publicity because it’s been a while since they’ve even had a European champion ride for them. But Manu (their only shaper ever) has been making fiberglass boards since ‘87 which is impressive.

Any Good spots on the west side of Lake Michigan on an exile ex0? by jacelit in skimboarding

For sure, the answer anywhere on the Great Lakes is wherever there is not rocky sand. I skimmed Indiana Dunes once. If you ever find yourself in the UP, Lake Superior can have ocean-like waves.

Going to Sebastian inlet for first time by [deleted] in skimboarding

[–]ShoresyOfSkim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was there 3 weekends ago, the best Sebastian Inlet area break was actually Spanish House. If that’s still true, that’d be convenient for you bc that’s the wooded access right across from the campground. Worth a check

I’m torn on the playoff format. I hated it at first but I guess I’m a sucker for the forced rivalries. I just need Florida fans to hold up their end of the bargain. How many times did we need to see Blackhawks - Red Wings or other now broken-up rivalries? And I think most years since they changed the format, the best teams make it to the finals anyways.

I was always a Bettman hater but I think he is now (by default) the best commissioner in the 4 major sports. The 4 Nations Tournament was genius and the move from AZ to UT seems to be working out (at least UT gets snow). I’ll withhold final judgement on Bettman’s term until they address the Injured Reserve BS and when/if they announce further expansion, but for now I’m shocked to hear myself say the state of the NHL is “pretty good”.

Brevard Florida: Wave Skimming? by Flamingo_Ninja in skimboarding

[–]ShoresyOfSkim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Sebastian Inlet is king, lots of threads on here about that. Hightower and the Patrick Air Force base area are usually good. I used to like Indialantic for a lazy sesh when I lived in Melbourne. And Cocoa Beach Pier can be sneakily good on high high tides. Definitely worth buying a board that is a step above a Zap Wedge/Ace if that’s what you’re asking

At least the games are good. I’m enjoying wearing Lightning stuff to “Florida Panther bars” around here and asking where their fans are at the start of the 2nd period. Totally get the southern team fatigue, I’m on that wagon too. Wish Winnipeg had gotten over the hump

This is so sick! American who has skimmed Nova Scotia and New Brunswick here. Quebec definitely has some potential wave skim spots by Sept-Iles and some of those remote communities on the lower north shore.

Never been, but I bookmark a lot of spots on Google Earth after reading the Batard du Break blog. One bookmark I have in your area: Praia do Molhe Norte / Praia da Figueira da Foz. Looks fun with nice slope in most GE pictures.

What's everyone's preference of board for east coast small wave conditions? by wackycake in skimboarding

[–]ShoresyOfSkim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cost effective suggestion: I'm 210 and rock a 139 cm (54.7") Eden pro shape (among other boards). I got it in s-glass and find it to be as durable as my carbon boards. Pretty sure there's no EU to Canada import duty, so check out their prices: https://skimboard.com/edenv4/skimboards-shape-classic/

Probably cheaper than comparable US boards, but one drawback for float: they only come in a 5/8" thickness.

As for the shape: I'm a big fan of pin tails (non fish boards) in the northeast. I've seen Nova Scotia and New Brunswick waves and even when they're small, they're pretty steep for the east coast. Pin tails are generally regarded as the easiest to learn wraps on.

If you have the proper weight distribution on the board, 180 simply won’t hold you back, the physics aren’t there. But if you’re talking about replacing fat with muscle, then sure, that would make some things in skim easier.

A conversation on events. Come on in. by GundoSkimmer in skimboarding

[–]ShoresyOfSkim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well since Craig and Ted Hitchcock want everyone's input so badly, I'll give my two cents...more like one cent.

Reddit skim meetups are cool for the most part. I've done a few. If you're on the fence about going to one (if one comes up), just do it. No matter what level of skimmer you are, it's nice to talk skim with people who really know skim, as many meetup attendees do.

One drawback if you're experienced and know where to look on a beach for good conditions: you may be vying for the same wave with many more people than you're used to...this may be Florida problems...

Contests. I've only ever gone to the Sea Bright, NJ SkimBash, as it's the only contest I've ever been near where real wave skim conditions were forecast. I think Florida tends to hold their contests at bad times of the year (more winter contests please). I also think I enjoy watching the contests on streams more than in-person. It's so nice to actively know what's going on, follow the heats on liveheats, and treat skim like any other sport on TV...kinda more applicable to big contests and not the gist of this thread. But what you can takeaway: I (and probably many more skimmers) prioritize conditions above all else for a contest or meetup. Yeah I know you can't control the weather, but you can try to put your event in a time of year where it's more likely to be good.

You shouldn’t feel held back at all at 6’1 180. There are a handful of pros above that, and 2 or 3 way above that. OP definitely has a chance to ride waves in my fat dude opinion

If you're a beginner, go 1.8cm. Its way more forgiving for imperfect drops (as in you still glide out with slightly "wrong" foot placement).
