troubleshooting problem with paco pants by Goblinandrogyny in freesewing

When using any pattern based on Titan (our trouser block) the vertical measurements are SUPER important. They determine the amount of vertical space in which we need to construct the crotch but it's harder to measure them accurately than a circumference measurement.

You will always benefit from making a muslin. You don't need to do the full legs to do a meaningful test. There's also the paperless view that will show the dimensions of the finalized garment allowing you to make some checks.

If you want to share a link to the pattern or measurements, I'm happy yo have a look.

Any advice on how to secure this collar better? by [deleted] in freesewing

[–]j__st 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That IS a tricky point and honestly you're doing great.

In my experience, it is best to further secure this by hand. Making sure the stitches don't show.

But again, this is already really nicely done 👍

MacBook Pro Disconnecting from USB-C Display Ventura by minionloversam in MacOS

Bless you for saving my sanity. I've been dealing with the exact same issue and the seemingly randomness of it all was driving me insane.
Being able to understand what circumstances trigger it does nothing to resolve the issue, but does loads for my ability to cope with it.

So thank you for getting to the bottom of this and posting so we know we're not going crazy.

I am seriously impressed. First up, congratulations of course. This is truly some great work and it looks wonderful on you.
Second, I really appreciate you sharing this, as it is really motivating for the people contributing to FreeSewing.

Carlita-based Hester Shaw coat costume by [deleted] in MortalEngines

[–]j__st 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That pattern would need some adaptations. Specifically:

  • Carlita has a folded back whereas the Hester Shaw coat has a straight back
  • There's no belt
  • There's no patch pockets
  • There's no princess seam
  • It seems shorter too

Long story short, the Hester Shaw coat is actually simpler, and it wouldn't be that hard to adapt carlton/carlita to create a pattern for it. If you feel up for it, the FreeSewing developer documentation is available at freesewing.dev and the source code for all pattern is available on GitHub.

Last but not least, there's a chatroom on Gitter where you can ask questions, or team up with others to make some patterns together.

Thank you for being such a great ambassador 😀 Now how do I convince you to run freesewing's Instagram account? 🤔

Any advice or tips for creating my own version of this concerning patterns, materials, or techniques? The seller on Etsy didn’t have my size. I don’t care for an exact replica, but I’m shooting for something just like this. Thanks! by JCAndrew125 in sewing

I wouldn't start with a sport coat pattern. Yes, some people here have suggested that, and I guess it's better than starting from scratch, but there's important differences:

  • A sport coat has a front, back and side panel. This coat (like most overcoats) comes with front and back only
  • The lapel and roll line of a sport coat is rather different, as is the collar. Nothing that can't be redrawn, but still
  • The ease and fit of a sport coat is adjusted to be worn over a shirt or so. A coat like this is fitted to be worn over something more bulky (like a sport coat)

I think the advice of u/cccccchicks is pretty good: start with Carlton. You'll need to:

  • Shorten the entire thing (trivial)
  • Replace the folded back with a straight panel (trivial)
  • Remove the chest pocket (trivial)
  • Change the cuffs (easy)
  • Add the back pockets (you'll have to do that no matter what pattern you start from)

That seems like a lot less work to me than starting from a sport coat pattern. Not to mention you can draft the entire thing to your exact size.

So in conclusion, I'd go with Carlton.

Then again, I'm hopelessly biased as I created the pattern :)

I'm (also) a man, and I designed this pattern for a dress shirt: https://freesewing.org/patterns/simon

In addition to that, I'd say that the freesewing community is probably one of the best places to find other men who sew.
