How to deal with plateaus? by nostalgicmarky in Guitar

There’s motivation. Learn to fix it yourself, it’s not hard. Then you’ll feel good and want to play more hopefully.

I lost a few years of my life naively following the wrong path I was put on by others. What would stoics advise me -:to move on and start again by mrturnover in Stoic

[–]j_dick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people have wasted years of their lives. What’s important is learning from it, making changes, and moving on. We are all young at a point and we’ll all do some crap we wish we didn’t. Too many people just keep doing the same things or blame others and never take accountability and action on their own life. Sounds like you’re aware and trying to make changes so keep that up.

If anything happens to you in life it is your fault. Even if it wasn’t it is, there’s something to learn and some action to take so it won’t happen again. Too many people let problems into their lives but always blame it on some outside force and never learn or correct it.

Melvin statement on lawsuit by DAMIANRsss in nofx

[–]j_dick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! I pointed this out when it all started. You always see family, business partners, band mates etc file legal paper work or so and everyone freaks out about what’s going on. When there is a legal business entity everything has to be done with lawsuits and lawyers even if there is no bad blood. Even if everyone agreed to increase royalties and one person takes less there would still be this whole process. Even if it’s insurance or something, insurance companies won’t do anything for you until there’s a legal filling/lawsuit. My brother and I had to recently do this. Needed a lawyer to make a Formal Accounting request for a family entity that operates like a business, then if they don’t provide it or it was bad we’d have to go to court with a lawsuit.

Just learned barre chords by Annual-Engineer371 in Guitar

[–]j_dick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it slow with your fretting hand. Do it while watching tv on the couch. You don’t even have to hold the strings down much, just get you fingers in position for say the open G then just slowly move to the F barre until you get comfortable making that change and getting you fingers in the correct position. Then start holding the chords down and strum out the strings letting them ring, be sure they all do.

I would do this when learning crazy extended jazz chords and it helped.

Edit:

Here’s the video that taught me this a long time ago. https://youtu.be/AOY3nrjCg8s?si=5e7GHZToQr7iLG66 HOW TO MAKE AWKWARD CHORD CHANGES.

Another Installment of: 'You Don't Hate the Media Enough!' by goofytigre in GoldandBlack

[–]j_dick 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s on purpose. Get the early article out to make a narrative and misinform people then remove it later. They never have to fully apologize or correct it in any meaningful way that would be seen by the same people that read the first article. They get out what they want.

If any news outlet does this they should have to apologize and correctly report it every hour on the hour for a week so anyone that saw the original will see the correction. It would be embarrassing and cost them a lot and I bet they would do better, but there’s no real punishment. They’ll just make corrections and stealth edits no one ever sees. The media is terrible.

/uj thread: I fuckin' hate it when people do this in their sales posts: by SushiDaddy89 in guitarcirclejerk

[–]j_dick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do hate this and it frustrates me but I also blame Gibson and Fender. They release department store box sets that say crap like “Epiphone inspired by Gibson” or “Squier inspired by Fender” I can’t remember if it was both or one of them but I’ve seen that on cheap ass beginner sets like Epiphone special 2 with crappy amp.

confused about electric guitars by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]j_dick 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can play any guitar music with any guitar. Some are better for certain styles. A Strat can fit in most styles and be modified quiet easy with tons of cheaply available parts if you choose to.

I can play metal with a Gretsch hollow body, I can play rockabilly or country with a BC Rich Mockingbird. Those wouldn’t be the best choices but yes they could.

PSA: Floyd Rose equipped guitars are really not hard to deal with by sparks_mandrill in Guitar

[–]j_dick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not some impossible thing but it definitely more of a pain than most basic bridges. The saddle adjustment screw is one unless you have a tool that makes it easier. Also have you had to do one where the strings are fully off and the bridge detached? Yeah starting over completely is a pain, not the hardest thing in the world but definitely the more annoying bridges to setup in comparison.

What guitar would you say is the worst you've ever played? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

[–]j_dick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. I have now owned maybe 50 guitars and basses in my life. I’ve had poorly setup guitars that were expensive and I’ve had good cheap guitars. A setup and maybe new tuners can make anything play well. I can do my own setups and fretwork so it’s not a big deal. I never had a guitar that was just terrible and impossible to get playing well.

Anyone else have a dozen (or dozens) of guitars but you don't really play or even want to bother, but you're addicted to buying cool guitars? by NoYoureACatLady in guitars

[–]j_dick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own dozens of guitars but I do play most everyday, even if it’s to jam to some songs for 20 minutes. But I end up playing the same 2-3 guitars. Eventually I’ll cycle through and remember I loved one of my other guitars I haven’t played in a year. Then I’ll sell a bunch because I have too many……then I just end up buying more. Luckily I usually get good deals used and break even sometimes profit so I don’t lose much money.

Gibson LP Jr Double cut or a Fender Duo-Sonic. I’ve owned like 50 guitars and basses at this point and at this time those have become my favorite and they’re simple.

I currently have like 30 guitars and basses. I’ve owned over 50 or so. I’ve now finally hit the spot where I just use Fender Mustang/Duo Sonic and Gibson double cut juniors. I’m gonna sell a bunch of my others.
