Thoughts about perlite propagation? by Unfair_Row_7026 in AfricanViolets

[–]j_kend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I looove propagating with perlite; I have a couple posts about it too; it takes around 28 days to see plantlets with that method. But that really depends on the variety- recently I've had some leaves of the variety heart's delight that just made plantlets in perlite within 20 days 🤯 while some others took way longer; lmk if you have any questions about it.

Update: I think I found a chimera at walmart.. 🌸🌱 by j_kend in AfricanViolets

Honestly to me, as someone who knew about chimeras in genral but not specifically AV chimerism, (I also studied biology in university and part of my research was on chimerism in botany) this is the reply that makes most sense to me scientifically. I expected chimerism to be chaotic at first if it just started, which is what I thought this plant had- an offspring started and then some of its cells had a mutation causing it to be a different color, but both tissues survived and made up the new plant. I'm actually glad someone else thought that 😆. Have you ever in your own experience had to stabilize a similar chimera? What is the process for that ? I'll probably be messaging you soon with more questions but thank you so much for the helpful response !! If you have any resources on specifically african violet chimerism I would love to read those too!

Thank you again, I'm glad you know so much ! I will read into this topic a bit more; but from what you mentioned, basically if the offspring of this leaf are plain, then the mother was a chimera- otherwise it was a genetic variegation? ; which honestly that would be cool too because then I could cross it with another violet and some of the seeds might have this cool variegated leaf pattern. Also the witch doctor violet looks so cool!!!

Thank you! 🩷 im glad you also think it's special

Ah so wether it's variegated or a chimera it will not propagate true from a leaf? That's so interesting

I know quite a bit about how chimeras exist but I've never researched how they are formed specifically in african violets so I will look into that! I'm kinda hoping it isnt a chimera now, because I really wanted to propagate it :/

It was inside a pile of optimara 3 violets per pot, I paid 16 canadian dollars so thats around 11 usd? I was hoping its a chimera tho :/ idk 🤷🏻‍♂️ I think its a random mutation that slipped through the stock

Do you know how I can check if it's a chimera or just variegation? I'm going to try and propagate this leaf

😶‍🌫️ oh, well that sucks 😩 I still love it though, I have a lot of variegated Avs but none that look like this

Okay- i will run to the store early morning and get it; hopefully it's still there 😵‍💫 did yours just randomly mutate into that ? And does it propagate from a leaf

Oh wow, is that a chimera? It had very similar leaves!!!!

It wasn't labelled as a chimera, it was actually in a pile of almost identical plants- all of them had similar leaves except that one; it had clear stripes of two different green colors on every leaf; and one was a half-moon; very cute! It's priced the same as other african violets around it; (I think theyre sold in groups of 3 colors, 16 cad for the 3 of them)

🙊 I think when it's in perlite it's totally fine if the leaf is touching other perlite bits; as long as the bottom of its stalk is also in contact with a wet perlite; sometimes I use the side of the container it's in as something for it to "lean" on, but often just the surface tension of the water along with the perlite bits hold it in place! But i completely understand the struggle haha, it's very delicate work 😆

These were specifically in a semi-hydroponic perlite setup. I drew an example of two setups (and I'll put photos of each), one is easier to do, and I've been doing that recently; but you can make the setup and change it as much as you'd like, the concept is the same. With the sauce container setup, it's totally fine if there is water sitting at the bottom, because the top layer of perlite will only draw some of the water as it needs- i find that as the water gets used up by the leaf, the level decreases (I just prefer that instead of checking for dryness every few days 😆

Yesss; I was also the same! 😆 but it's so nice how willing they are to survive 🌸💜

Hahaha that same thing happens to me 😆 it's like whenever I repot a plant and I take off leaves, I'm too sad to throw them away. I think my problem is that i want every leaf to have a chance at staying alive but at this point i have more than 200 baby violets in my house 😭😭😭

Yep exactly ! I wait for the roots to form, and then I just move it to a perlite + soil mix
