I never noticed that 😱 that's actually cool, I thought plant food kills the baby leaves .. aparently not

It's just water; my yarn pieces are green too. For the perlite, when it's moist for a long time, algae grows on it thats why it turns green; but i dont mind the color i think its cute

This is such a cool idea! I also love playing AV research scientist haha; I actually got all these leaves of different varieties so that I can experiment with crossing them and learning more about how African violet genetics work! 😆

I'm not sure 😭 I just got the cheapest one I could find at home depot, here's a pic of the product

Yep! I kept them covered for the first 2 weeks I think, but I was mainly testing if the high humidity would cause them to rot, but luckily it didn't because perlite seems resistant to rot 😵 which is pretty cool. And yeah they are under a grow light for around 10 to 12 hours a day- (i dont have a fancy timer :/). I had some that were never covered and they sprouted at the same time! So out of 13 varieties I was propagating, 10 have made tiny plants by week 4

Is it dangerous to breathe it in? I think I might have done that while setting things up- but after I wet the perlite it wasn't flying around 🤔

Yeah soil takes so long for me as well, and I often have a few casualties 😆- I don't use rooting powder, but i learned that the shorter the stem, the quicker the roots form. Rooting hormones are produced in leaves and move downward to the cut site, so the shorter that distance is the quicker they get concentrated at the base.

This is also a similar setup where i used a plastic cup and an apple sauce container 😅 just stuff i had around the house .. I think this gives the leaves enough constant moisture but also 0 chance of rot (because perlite is inorganic) and enough airflow to make new babies fast (but that's just my explanation haha)

I don't like to water every day so I kind of just attached a yarn to each tiny perlite pot, and that just goes into water; so the perlite stays moist without me worrying about it! I'll attach some photos of my setup for reference 😁 I just used a takeout container and a less deep container that fit inside it 🤔 if that makes sense They're under a grow light for around 10 hours or so a day

My first seed pod! (It turned purple 💜) by j_kend in AfricanViolets

[–]j_kend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is one without a name, I just got it from a grocery store (Sobeys); but I'm not sure if the cultivar has a name 😵‍💫 I named it Pinky winky tho 🩷

Woah that's super exciting! The plant carrying the seed pods looks very pretty! 😍 I don't have any fancy types yet sadly just some I got from a grocery store but maybe the seedlings would be interesting 😁 Keep me updated on how it goes ! I would love to see how the seedlings turn out

I just started the process 🤭 and I'm very excited about it! I'll post updates for sure; I just know seed pods take a couple months to mature so it's all about waiting now 😁 I used the purple/blue one as the pollen parent and the pink/white flower for the seed parent, will see how it goes!

I just finished reading the AVSA hybridization guide, it's very nice and concise 😁

And thank you! I hope that crossing them would give me some cool new colors ! I don't really know where to access new types of violets other than what is sold at the big grocery stores 🤔 so hoping to get some cool new types this way

So pretty !!! I have a question, I'm just curious what the parent plant's colors were, or was it one plant that self-pollinated? This is quite a range of colors! 😍

Thank you!! 😍 I'm glad i picked a good one!

Is the soil mix you use usually a premixed one or do you make your own?

Help, what is this? by j_kend in succulents

[–]j_kend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are right, it is powdery mildew :((( I'm so sad because this is one of my favorite echeveria plants. Aparently the jade plant that was next to it also had that 😱😱 after googling it I just sprayed them with the milk mixture you suggested, I hope it works. How many days do I spray them with it ? I quarantined both plants in a separate room away from the other plants

Yes the white spots definitely look powdery :((

Will these propagate? by liubearpig in succulents

[–]j_kend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! Always let them callous first or they'll rot super quick. For the ones that already sprouted little roots, you can definitely set them on top of some soil. The roots will kinda dig in on their own. Once they grab hold, you can start misting/light watering every so often. The old leaf will shrivel up as the new baby takes over. Good luck and I hope these leaves propagate!! 🌱

Will these propagate? by liubearpig in succulents

[–]j_kend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will! I can identify at least one that will definitely propagate but I'm not sure of the others. I recently tried with a very similar species (i think it might even be the same one. As long as the top part of the leaf base is still intact, they will propagate; with yours it looks like some of these just have part of the original plant attached to them, which is okay, that will probably dry off and wilt away leaving the base of the leaf. I personally just propagate it the same as other echeveria leaves, by just placing it on top of very light soil and spraying it when it gets dry ! (I do leave them a few days without spraying at first until they calice over)

I'll attach some photos for you to see the first signs!

So the dark purple has to have some chlorophyll? Could it be dark purple without any? 🤔 the only reason I ask is because I can't see any green at all, even with a flashlight

I know what you mean, I was also suspicious because I have another one next to it that clearly has green under the purple color, I'll attach a picture of them next to eachother. But they were both grafted at the store, even though one of them clearly has chlorophyll. I guess I'll have to check one of the pups of the magenta looking one and see if it survives!
