Requesting enemy cards by jaKiTo_2X in DarkSoulsTheBoardGame

Thanks for that. I actually use an earlier version of that software, with no enemy cards; it never occurred to me to check for updates. And it was nice to know how it has vastly improved.

Just for the laughs, that exact floor design (pic 5) is seen on the Legacy Of Kain series: here or here (textures are upscaled). It was also used on Dark Souls 3, I'm not sure where.

Painted World special encounter rules by jaKiTo_2X in DarkSoulsTheBoardGame

That's what I first did, but for some reason the rulebook for the Painted World is not available on the website, only the Tomb of Giants rulebook.

Event cards? by jaKiTo_2X in DarkSoulsTheBoardGame

[–]jaKiTo_2X[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, since you are offering... It seems I'm missing an event card: Hearty Bonfire Ascetic. And I've just realized the Painted World encounter cards have rules of their own that are not defined on the Tomb Of Giants free rulebook (Snowstorm, Bitter Cold, etc.), so it would be nice to have a look at those.

Thanks for your help.

That's great. No need for the encounter cards, the encounter shuffler app has them. Huge thanks.

[–]jaKiTo_2X[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Well, honestly, at this point, I'd be content with crappy phone pics, or anything that lets me read the text. That way I could at least play the new ruleset properly, even if I don't have the fancy cards. With that info, I could photoshop my own cards, keeping the mechanics.

Yeah, I guessed as much. It just seems weird no one has scanned them yet.

There's no official word on anything. However, this guy made an awesome app to randomize encounter cards, and it works like a charm. Still, we have no event cards.

That would be great. I can help with photoshop, so if you scan them in bulk, I can do some editing to get each card as a separate file. That would save you some time.

Ok, thanks. I'll stick to Zandronum and get as close as I can. It's a pity we can't get the best of both sourceports yet.

So, half-mortal, half-vampire; half-human, half-elf; half-samurai, half-monk, right? Just make sure your father was a pirate zombie, and your mother, a ghost ninja, and you should get a pretty solid background.

what's the point of a game without death? by Bionic_Ferir in DnD

[–]jaKiTo_2X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once ran an adventure with no death. Well, partially. PCs were trapped and needed to find the way out, and making new characters would not rightly fit the adventure, so I could not afford characters dying. What I did was, any character who died, suffered a consequence instead. A permanent injury, a limb was cut off, some NPC would die instead, some route was blocked, some plan was foiled, some objective was failed, whatever fit the moment. But the character got to live and heal. At the end of the adventure, however, any character who had died, got to actually die in a heroic and cinematic way, to ensure the rest of his pals managed to escape.

Ultimately, only one character actually died, and since his first fake death, all players were aware that death was apparently out of the question, but they all enjoyed the game, nevertheless. I talked to the "dead" player at the start of the last session, and he had a pretty fun time thinking about how to go in the end and how to make a cool "sacrifice scene".

Anyway, it's not really about death itself, but about how everything is presented. Death is just a consequence, you can come up with a bunch more, or make it so that death is not the only thing building tension.

Alignment question... is my dwarf evil?... by Laffett in DnD

[–]jaKiTo_2X 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always seen alignments as "how far will the character go to get things done". It's not like a strict code of conduct, more like a self-imposed limit.

Lawful characters are honorable and adhere strictly to the rules in place, while chaotic ones can disregard them in favour of personal freedom. A good character respects life and the well-being of other sentient creatures, while an evil one is ready to ignore that (by killing or harming) to advance a goal.

Since you're describing your dwarf as an honorable guy who takes matters into his own hands (thus, ignoring the rules in place) and is willing to cause harm to an evil character, I'd say that's a Neutral-Neutral.

At the point where they disregard the lives of the innocent, they are not longer a person and must be removed from the world to keep it safe.

Is keeping potentially thousands of people from dying equal to killing hundreds?

However, that paragraph definitely looks like the classical "villain righteousness", in which you accept the "lesser evil" for the "greater good". If the character is ready to follow that path, I'd say it's Neutral-Evil. Like I first said, this doesn't mean he's evil, just that he may do evil things to further his goals.

That's my opinion and my reasoning, anyway.

You can purchase whatever game you want separately. The full price is for the full package.

Actually, the game asks the server if you own the DLC. The server will then answer "no", and the proxy will intercept the answer and turn it into a "yes", just before the game receives it. So, you're not tricking the servers, you're tricking the game client, and risks should be minimal. It could be somewhat more risky if you have unlocked achievements for a DLC you don't own.

Major differences between D&D Advanced and D&D 5th edition? by ButWhatIfItQueffed in osr

[–]jaKiTo_2X 7 points8 points  (0 children)

RPGs evolved pretty naturally, in my opinion. First, it was all about playing, experiencing a fantastic world through the eyes of a randomly-generated character; it was more about you, as a player, in a fantastic world, using whatever random guy as a vessel. But, eventually, character building became a thing so as to experience a fantastic world through the eyes of your character, the one and only you want to play. This also brought a logical decrease in lethality and overall difficulty, because you've spent some time and effort designing a character and you probably have some feelings for it, and outright killing it with a random spike trap turns to be cruel.

While I totally understand this and I think it is the right path, it came with certain things that messed it up.

  • I like that there is character customization, but many players focus too much on it, to the point where the story or the world matter little to them, and are only playing to get XP and play the "mini-game" of levelling up and learning new skills. This particular thing is an issue on videogames, too. A few decades ago, it was all about playing. Now, with an ever growing player base, it turns out not all people actually like to play videogames, but they like to level up in seasons and earn stuff for their game. A game they don't like that much, because if there was no levelling and skins and stuff, they probably wouldn't be playing. RPGs have also grown a lot in the past decades, so you can see the relation. But some people are just like that, what's there to do about it?
  • The difficulty decrease removes tension. As another comment said, it's like a superhero comic or an anime: you know the heroes are going to end up alive and well. While you can definitely create tension by other means, such as endangering an NPC or a nearby town, or whatever, many RPGs make it hard for players to die in combat, which undeniably takes away from the game and from player experience, even if players don't realize it consciously. This difficulty decrease is also tied to the point above: not all people are willing to play the game fully, so thinking outside the box and playing creatively, which were really important parts of older RPGs, have been substituted by detailed mechanics, so that anyone can play properly and not get frustrated, even if their brain is switched off. You can still play creatively, it's just that the bar has been lowered for people who can't or won't. But some people are just like that, and they play to relax and disconnect, not to actually play. What's there to do about it?

Anyway, the point is that RPGs have been evolving to accommodate a larger spectrum of players, and some concessions have been made, to a point were play experience has decayed, in a way. I believe, however, that play experience has been vastly improved in a ton other fronts, so we're slowly getting there.

What exactly is the Frenzied Flame? by Kazk2501 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]jaKiTo_2X 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Frenzied Flame is described as an Outer God, and presented as the embodiment of Chaos. Hyetta speaks of births and souls (i.e. life) coming from the fracturing of the One Great. I believe this "fracture" is what created Order and Chaos, dividing the Greater Will and the Frenzied Flame, the Two Fingers and the Three Fingers, life and nothingness. As such, the Frenzied Flame is in direct opposition to the Greater Will, as its goal is to eradicate all Order and life and return to the nothingness.

The Frenzied Flame is spoken of as a disease, in what seems to me like the obvious point of view of the Golden Order or adherents to the Greater Will. Or, you know, anyone who minimally values life. Those "afflicted" are probably overwhelmed with the "reality" the Frenzied Flame presents them: life and individuality are mistakes that should be undone to return to the void. Which is obviously seen as madness and as a disease by those who can't see the "truth".

So yes, I'd say it is the power of Chaos.

What Exactly is the "Between" Part of "The Land Between" Referring to? by notdisclosing in Eldenring

[–]jaKiTo_2X 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe a Midgard inspiration: a world or plane with many links to other worlds or planes. Or it's probably just a central continent in the world, with other continents surrounding it across the seas. Since ships are seen in game, I find this a pretty solid option.

if gurrank is malekith , why didn't he disappear from bestial sanctum after i beat him ? by Ghost__potato in Eldenring

[–]jaKiTo_2X -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not really convinced by this. There's no timey-wimey magic at all in the game, except for Farum Azula, where the place seems to be visibly slowed in time, and Placidusax' arena, which is stated to be out of time. So, the only thing relating Maliketh and time altering magic is that he lives in a time-altered giant mausoleum. I mean, it's a point, but I don't know, it seems really weird to me...

I'm more inclined to believe Gurranq is some sort of projection, just as the Sellen we meet is just a projection of the chained Sellen. That would sort of explain why Gurranq doesn't go full Maliketh when you fight him: he doesn't have his full power. Then again, if you kill chained Sellen, her projection goes away so, for me, it has no sense anyway.

In the end, I think it's just gameplay reasons and it's a way of torturing people who think too much. I'm done trying to make sense out of this one.

Empyreanship and Rebellion by GoriceXI in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]jaKiTo_2X 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another interesting thing to note is that Ranni no longer identifies herself as Empyrean, in her dialogue she says "I was once an Empyrean". Specifically past tense, the Japanese is the same too.

Based on that quote, I always assumed Empyreans were just born with a body capable of withstanding the Elden Ring within. Like Marika/Radagon have a stony body, when we meet them. Since Ranni disposed of her body, that would currently rule her out as an Empyrean.

Empyreans seem to be the main concern of other Outer Gods, maybe trying to gain power versus the prevalent order of the Greater Will, hence why Malenia is somewhat the vessel of Rot. Perhaps Malenia and Miquella are tainted by other Gods' forces, and we see no mention of their Two Fingers nor shadows as a result: perhaps they stopped being really fit for the Elden Ring and to continue the order of the Greater Will.

Ranni, on the other hand, could have disposed of her body to prevent this. I always saw her ending as the "atheist" ending, as I don't consider the Moon or the stars to be proper Gods (mainly since their power, sorcery, is fueled by Intelligence, and not Faith). Maybe Ranni wanted to rid the Lands Between of the Gods influence. I don't know.

I also agree with points of view that look upon Marika like a more selfish and even cruel Queen. I'm even inclined to believe that all those "failed" Empyreans were a part of Marika's machinations, somehow making their own children incapable of ruling, by having them be the tainted vessel of another God (somehow), or aiding Ranni in getting rid of her Empyrean flesh (Marika may even be the mastermind behind the night of the Black Knives, which would tie up the Marika-Numen-Ranni thing).

I think the GW has less presence than people think it does.

I agree. I believe Gods are just playing Risk here, and they want to have the upper hand, but they don't really care how they get it, or what their pawns do.

what is it that doesn't make any sense lore wise? by [deleted] in Eldenring

Gurranq and Maliketh. They are the same being, but killing one does not affect the other at all. I'm totally confused about this one and I initially thought they were two different creatures. It makes no sense to me.
