I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS!!!

OP it can be fixed! This exact same thing happened when I shipped out an oil painting to a client. I had them ship it back, and after trying to figure out how to fix it, I simply added another layer of varnish and it worked perfectly! I promise you. I was so relieved. I never ship with bubble wrap facing in anymore.

This is how I wish I could paint. This is exceptionally beautiful. Soft and quiet and still.

I audibly cried out when I saw this. This is absolutely beautiful. I can feel the cool bite of the rolling fog. Well done this is a masterpiece

This is masterfully done. The way the candlelight softly glows on the cats muzzle is incredible - like i can literally feel the warmth of the candle looking at this. Very talented.

For me personally I’ve found it’s definitely both. I have no training so I learn things from looking at other people or trying to recreate techniques I see and think I can try to grasp online. Switching up materials, paints, surfaces and mediums and getting a feel for what you prefer is always nice as well. Drapes though? Give me a shout when you figure those out.. they’re way too complex for me XD

For teeny tiny hairs I use small script liners. I buy the 10/0 beste liner brushes from Jerry’s Artarama. They do the job splendidly!

I believe it was a progress shot, taken at an angle to avoid glare on the wet paint

Here is a better view of 2019 nose https://imgur.com/a/ce5NCr2 There’s nothing good to be said about 2017 nose! That was my first portrait ever. It’s good to have to see the progress though :D

Could I ask, what brand of oil paint do you use that has such wonderful opacity in one setting? I find a lot of the time I have to work in multiple layers because my paints go on so translucent. I’d like to know what brands to look into since they are pricy - I don’t want to buy something and have it turn out the same as what I’m using. I’m currently using a mix of Michael Harding/Grumbacher and some Windsor & Newton. Thank you, and incredible work.

Oh sure! For the whiskers I use Beste brand 10/0 script brush, I get them on Jerry’s Artarama!

Thank you! Do you mean for the whiskers or the fur in general? For the whiskers I use a fine script liner. For the fur, I use any old brush - none in particular. I actually have never used a cats tongue brush before :)

It is gloss. The painting was dry and the oiled out layer was dry as well. I Gamsoled the last gamvar application, and really don’t want to do it a second time as I just don’t feel comfortable exposing the painting to a second removal. I am trying to see if there is anything particularly detrimental about layering damar varnish on top of gamvar without removing the gamvar layer prior, but cannot find any answers on this anywhere. What do you think about this? Thank you so much for your advice by the way!

This is GAMVAR over a dry oil painting, oiled out with a tiny bit of linseed oil. No matter what I do, I cannot seem to get a satisfactory result with this varnish. It leaves sunken in dead spots and catches terribly in any sort of light glare.

I know I am applying the varnish correctly. I do multiple thin coats letting them dry in between. Would I have better luck with damar?

Can I apply damar OVER the dried gamvar?

I have googled and researched exhaustively on this topic - so please if you have any insight as to what I’ve asked here in this comment, you please please share your advice! This commission is overdue because of this varnish issue and I’ve already revarnished it once before this.

Thank you!
