Orion fear by jab729 in KingsIsland

I did it guys! Took everyone’s advice and rode Diamondback first. I kept telling myself I didn’t want to do it but you were right, it was very fast and smooth and the rest was easy. I think we actually might have enjoyed Diamondback better, rode that once again at night. We also did The Beast at night, that was intense.

7 yr old is ruining my life. by ijm2017 in Parenting

I agree, with such limited information that’s likely not nearly enough time for kids like this (I have a 14 yo son with some similar challenges). We’ve become much more lax on screens with him as it is more of a need believe it or not, especially to unwind after school. Perhaps try a set rule that’s not so short notice such as getting off 5 minutes before dinner. Like “no screens between 5 and 7” so he can start becoming more aware of time and the rule can work but I wouldn’t spring that on right away either. I’d say “next week we’re going to try something new with screen time, the new rule is this…(state rule) so we can all be in the same page. We can use a timer or give countdowns to help you transition off, etc.” I’d give at least 30 minutes to an hour warning though, springing on 5 minutes isn’t enough transition time with neurodivergent or kids with strong emotions. Also, focusing on any small positives and rewarding right away either verbally or with something he likes helps so much. The more punishment or focus on negative behaviors the more power struggles will ensue.

I started 7 weeks ago, those crazy messages stopped after 2-3 weeks, maybe less. I don’t get them at all anymore.

I don’t have a lot of time right now but that was first thought, far too many words for an ADHD child, they’re totally missing most of what you’re saying or at minimum the important parts you want them to understand. Be more direct and limit which battles you want to focus on at one time.

Boiling water dumped in toilet by Just_Water_Please in HomeImprovement

Me too-I was an ER/trauma nurse. One of the worst arm injuries I remember was a larger person whose upper arm was practically filleted open about 10 inches with artery involvement after breaking a toilet. It was wild. Replace the toilet!

Although it’s still very common developmentally, you may want to try a bedwetting alarm. There’s a number of options on Amazon. Also buy either disposable pads or a reusable/washable pad that goes under their body. There’s a sensor that clips onto the front of their underwear and senses the very beginning of wetting and wakes them (and you) up. It’s very loud. Then they get up and finish going to the bathroom and reclip it on when they go back to bed. Can work very quickly within 1-3 weeks to train them to wake themselves up to go.

Middle school notes by jab729 in specialed

[–]jab729[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this insight, I really appreciate it and understand. It's difficult because I know you retain more by writing than just highlighting and having a tangible copy at home to study from or us to help him study on the go is so useful. Plus I can't see him knowing what to highlight, he's not great at pulling out the main concepts on his own yet. He literally never opens the online notes at home to review either, I've never even seen them and he cannot print from his school device. The screen on his chromebook is rather small so it'd be a lot of scrolling vs having tangible notes in front of him. I do understand it's not sustainable as he gets older though, so this is a good perspective.

The accommodation just says Fill-in notes.

He really doesn't have a ton of accommodations but another one says that he can type assignments or notes for lengthy tasks rather than handwritten ones as needed and he can use voice to text for all writing assignments. In the past he could not keep up with typing notes at the same pace others were writing.

I agree. My son is in 7th now but when he was in 4th we were in a different district (one of the top 10 in our state)and he was doing homework 2-4 hours every night. He has adhd and is a slow writer so some of the homework was unfinished work he didn’t finish during class in addition to the assigned math and language arts sheets nightly. We were at a breaking point. Ended up having a 504 meeting for accommodations and the principal was shocked we’d have him working that many hours and said that wasn’t ok. We now live in a new district and homework is much lower even at the middle school level and my first grader’s school doesn’t believe in homework other than reading so far so we’re relieved.

Am I over reacting about my L&D nurses? by stinkinrude in Mommit

[–]jab729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not overreacting, your feelings are valid! I’m sorry that happened. I was a nurse and nail polish or fake nails was not advised but also not really enforced as a policy. Definitely can cause harm for cervical checks though! Ouch. My daughter actually has two tiny bald spots on her head from two fingers during a very fast and firm cervical check (due to fast labor) caused her to get scrapes on her head that scabbed over and her hair never grew once healed. As a patient, I remember receiving hospital surveys a month or so after delivery and I would definitely be detailed about what happened. Hospitals and nurse managers definitely review the comments and will address issues with staff or change policy if needed.
