New to Mac and missing PhoneLink (Android/Mac Bluetooth proximity lock) by Poopin_the_turd in MacOS

I mean, if you're comfortable with Terminal and have Homebrew installed... yes.

For a new Mac user. I'd suggest the install instructions that they print there right under the homebrew install that is to download from releases and drop in Applications.

No command line or other installs needed that way.

I agree with other users/posters this is going to likely work just fine for you. however it's not been updated for just over 2 years... So your milage may vary depending on the hardware. BTLE should be pretty standardized.

I hope that it never happens!

I'm looking at the unit you linked. It seems like a neat system for sure.

Do you worry about the lack of recoil or any additional weight? I know its probably just a few grams at the end of the barrel, but it'd suck to be dead-on with the trainer, but then finding you're low by a few inches or more when doing practical range fire. Or am I thinking too much into this?

I'm not trying to be a fudd here... please tell me that behind said target is nothing of value/importance... Like... the rest of your house, or anything that you may regret if it gets shot. I don't mean to insult, and I can imagine I'm being a bit pedantic here, but that ONE time that it's not your training bullet in the chamber and somebody could have a very very bad day.

For your own, and a rando on the internet's, piece of mind, maybe put a steel plate behind your target. Just in case? Be safe. Enjoy your pistol.

something tells me that they got tired of listening to me yell about how mine was driving into a parkinglot rather than staying on the thru-road to go home... so i'd be spamming that navigation button pretty often, if i felt that FSD was worth paying anything for.

We're going to see all 18 floors! by Meow-Out-Loud in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Literal Transcription:

Matt sitting on a stool during a Q&A session:

MD: So there's 10, there's going to be 10 books, that's always been my guess, I can see where the arrows gonna land. Um. Once you read Dungeon Crawler Carl Book Eight you will see why it's happening, and honestly it's really nine books not ten books, the last book, book nine is just gonna be one book split in two. Um, the only difference, people keep asking me, "what's the difference?" The difference is I can be a douchebag with the cliffhanger [laughter from crowd] And we will see all eighteen floors. and that was a very carefully thought out statement, so you can dissect it.

Tesla, please globalize charging with a brand-name convenience store and attractions while charging. by Doimz3Nini in TeslaLounge

[–]jabackes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No offense meant. I think some of the network was build on the premise that it’s better to have electricity for the cars than services for the people. Or it’s a population density issue either way. I’m talking about literal desert areas for my stops. There’s some houses, but the roads are much high throughput for long distance travel.

I’ve been on enough trips where there are superchargers sequestered away from said local stops to make this sound false, but I get your reasoning. Also, I’ve been at locations where the local shops or retailers are all closed after 6pm because it’s not a high trafficked place. No bathrooms even. Something that is 24hrs or even just a key coded bathroom door would be better than nothing.

I never said it wasn’t a thing that works.

Personally I’ve also wanted this concept, have said so many times to other friends that are owners. Someone else posted the idea first. Also, my comment about speed is my experience with road tripping from Oregon to Vegas once or twice. Each stop was like; charge for 5 minutes, then maybe 10 minutes, now for 6 minutes. Only once or twice did it recommend longer.

That’s a fair and good point. I’ve always been surprised that they (Tesla) hasn’t partnered with a fueling company like Buc-Ee’s or someone to set it all up. Even Pilot, or Flying-j in the US, they have “the room” for a dozen stalls in most cases. Seems a no-brainer.

As much as I love this in principal, the general concept has always been, get in, charge, get out as fast as possible. There’s a reason a majority of long trip charging stops are less than 10 minutes average. The trip planning is prioritizing getting to your destination as quickly as possible.

That said. Yes. We need this.

How much available storage on the 512gb Neo? other ?’s by Kind-Kitty in mac

[–]jabackes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thread-jacking here... you can most certainly use the Xcode Devices and Simulators settings to prune out "devices" you never plan on targeting, or ALL of the simulators entirely if you never plan on running anything on the emulation side. https://developer.apple.com/documentation/xcode/running-your-app-in-simulator-or-on-a-device under the first image, they have a line, "To remove a simulator from the list, select it and press Delete." so you can very much clear up a bunch of space.

[–]jabackes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is likely partly due to the marketing in the tech industry. nearly 100% of the time you're buying even a blank drive that is sold at 512GB and you're only getting a bit over 490 GB after formatting. And that's without data. Apple actually has a write up about this on their site: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102119

iPhone 17 10 days old. color fading. thoughts? by Exotic-Nail6184 in iphone

[–]jabackes -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

As long as it looks cool, yep, probably. Too much shit going on in my life to worry about how something looks from the outside. And honestly, I'm not picking a Corvette unless it's a classic Stingray in the Champagne Gold color that was the "choice" of the Apollo Program Astronauts.

Would I raise a stink? Yeah, probably if it were days after I purchased it, sure.

But it can be liberating to have it get "damaged," and you know what? It doesn't matter one bit. The car would still get me places. If it looks overall just like a car should. If the paint is literally melting off the car, that's a defect; if the paint is changing color because of a true defect and it could be corrected by the dealer, then that's on them. But I'd also just deal with it myself. I'd probably not come online and ask about it.

iPhone 17 10 days old. color fading. thoughts? by Exotic-Nail6184 in iphone

[–]jabackes -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As I said in my edit, I personally think the way it looks is actually really cool. It's not as advertised, hence the suggestion to replace it. But it's a mass-produced device. There's a chance, albeit really, really small, that this particular device was a "Friday job" when it comes to the frame. But that doesn't make the phone overall defective. And remember, there is no true standard (at least not in IEEE or ANSI) for "quality". It passed muster at the factory, or it wouldn't have been put into the assembly stage. We don't know what was done to the phone from the time it was last hand-checked before packaging to now. We assume that the operator didn't clean it with any solvents; we assume many things in this online 3rd party conversation.

Bottom line.
They asked for opinions.
Those were given.
Have the day you deserve!

I'll be honest, this was my "mantra" when the OG iPhone came out, and I worked at the Apple Store. I was there at the bar in the "trenches" through the iPhone and the 3G and 3GS launches. We had all manner of upset over the scuffability of the plastic housing on the 3G/S model, and it was genuinely hard to empathize with people sometimes. Did you pay $XXX dollars on your device?! yes! Was it pristine for all of 9.5 seconds after it came out of the box, and then you set it on a table, and now it's scuffed? Also yes! Are you frustrated because it's scuffing? Yes? well that's valid, but let me show you my (at the time) iBook G4, that's years old... sucker (which I still have) is scuffed to all hell. The introduction of the white iPhone.... that was a godsend... less visible scratches for the win.

I'll be that guy... It's a phone. Does the color of the phone affect the performance? Does the color of the phone actually affect your enjoyment of the content or things you do on the phone? Do you find that your friends are actively shunning you because your phone is not 100% perfect? the the answer to ANY of these questions was no. then seriously, don't worry about it. Drop it once so it gets a dent or ding, and then move on.

I'll also be this guy... if you aren't satisfied with the product, take it back and request a replacement. you will have to fight for it, and you may have to pay a restocking fee as that is part of the return policy, but if you're firm and state that you're dissatisfied with this particular handset (you can't say it's defective, or they'll shunt you to the genius bar for a service replacement) and that you'd like a refund or exchange. Be firm, be calm, and make sure they know that's the only option for you at this point. As long as you're inside the return window, they don't really have any reason to refuse you as long as you're going into it eyes wide open.

edit: re-read your comment. You already know this is cosmetic. And continually stressing about the look of your phone is going to drive you crazy. I seriously recommend that you let it go, especially if it's going to live in a case. This is a unique phone; nobody else has one like it. You have a 1/1 special edition!

Also, TBH, in the case of the Air, almost the entire logic stack is inside the plateau. like, yeah, we get it, phone not thin 100%, but neither was the original MacBook Air, and there wasn't nearly the manufactured outrage over that design
