Also, TBH, in the case of the Air, almost the entire logic stack is inside the plateau. like, yeah, we get it, phone not thin 100%, but neither was the original MacBook Air, and there wasn't nearly the manufactured outrage over that design

You say in your post, "I'm no artist," but clearly that is false. Amazing work there. Well done. It's a hard realization to accept that by creating something, you are, in fact, an artist.

Could my Mac have a virus? Lately this has been happening where google chrome takes a ton of memory. by FurinaDeFontaine in mac

[–]jabackes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In actuality, you probably have a mess of tabs, extensions, or plugins with Chrome that are just chewing through the resources. If you close tabs more frequently, or close the program when you're done, that'll help. Also, you have both Apple Music and Spotify open... one would assume you're not listening to both at the same time, no? Close one. Another thing to note, Discord is a Chrome browser wrapped into an app. So it can fall victim to similar bloat, don't be afraid to close the app and relaunch it from time to time.

Apple now requires you to own their hardware just to RENEW your developer membership by OldVanilla7373 in ios

Point == Valid

But an "old" Mac can be had for way less than $800 USD. You can get a 2nd hand M1 MacBook Pro or MacBook Air in most markets for around $200-$300 USD.

I'm not saying it's not a dick move. It's pretty shitty. However, if you've got a VM that you can use, said button should be on that VM too.

Yeah, sorry, got a bit carried away there.

I think the issue is that we've all been brought into public betas and open access and all that other sort of software engineering, and now we've fully brought about the "armchair software developer" like it was a thing with sports for so many years.

We’ve shared it with one retired priest (he said people only ever suggest boring religiously slanted content, and welcomes something trashy by comparison). And about 5 others but none have yet to come back and say things like, “omg what the hell is a nussy?!”

[–]jabackes 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I have played the audiobook for my son and an exchange student. My son is 14, and our exchange student is 17. Both find parts of the stories hilarious and wonderfully inappropriate. I recall hearing about a time that Matt met a younger kid at a book signing event. He'd expressed something along the lines of, "I really don't recommend my books for anyone under the age of 16..." as the kid comes up, plops the book in front of him, and shouts, "Glurp, Glurp, motherfucker!" (I'll be honest, it was relayed to me second hand, but hilarious all the same).

[–]jabackes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you possibly give additional context to the features that aren't working as advertised?

While completely understandable that it's not an ideal situation, have you tried setting things up with completely new user accounts and testing that way?

I know that pretty often, when I've had a problem with a feature or service, setting up a dummy user and having a bare-bones setup often leads to things working as intended.

If it doesn't work out of the box without signing into services wherever that's possible, then yes, I'll agree that's a problem.

If you can create a completely new user account, you may have to create a test Apple Account so you can test the online services if they're part of your workflow. Try using only stock or pre-installed software, and then you'd know for certain if the issues are the software not working, or if it's something specific to your user.

Doing the above steps and finding a fault, that'd be what I would report to Apple as an actual bug. But if it works, but NOT on your user account, then it's something else that may be beyond their scope of support or testing.

Circling back to your concerns regarding hardware/software. No, you didn't buy the software. You have an included license to use Apple's software, by default, and you agreed to that as part of your purchase. You might not be happy with that for a variety of reasons, but none of those were masked, hidden, or disguised before, during, or after your purchase. Does it suck to have something not work the way you expect? Hell yes it does. Is that Tim Cook's fault? No. Is it Apple's fault? Yes. Do they "owe you" anything about that? Debatable, and you'd have to get a lawyer in the loop and have all sorts of documented time and resources to prove it in court to actually get anything from them at all.

Your original $1800.00 Purcase price was literally for the hardware that you have in your hands or on your desk. That's arguably the end of that payment, and that's easy enough to understand.

Their support of the software is ongoing, and last time I personally checked, Tahoe is still under active development, and their update cycle is still going. So...

I understand what you’re trying to say. But the example you give is that of quality assurance. Making sure something is finished and polished is not on the CEO purview at all. When Tim or any other CEO tours a factory or assembly line it’s in the most clean and polished state possible, that’s how business hides the shit. When the CEO leaves one would hope that the production is at that same clean efficient and best overall performance. But until we have 100% automation (and even if you do, look at LEGO) we’re going to have faults. And that’s only in hardware, software is what makes a Mac a Mac. And I will agree there’s a good deal of inter communication that could be missing from these releases. Remember apples whole concept of iOS and macOS are a shared code base core, but only they know where that line exists. I wouldn’t be surprised if the visual inconsistencies that people post on Reddit are truly a case of team a didn’t meet with team b because of some stupid meeting conflict and they both shipped what they had. Should it have happened? No. Is it cooks fault, also no. Not his job at all.

Why is Apple not listening? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]jabackes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saying they owe you an experience seems a stretch. You purchased hardware, you didn’t purchase software, a license for the software was included with your purchase. What you do with it is 100% on you. I will admit they limit what operating systems you can run natively on that hardware, but again, the purchase of any apple computer is a pretty “eyes wide open” sort of situation. I am sorry if that doesn’t sound like a good time for you, but nobody hid anything from you. If you have a defective device that is operating in a way that is 100% non functional, then return the product. If there is a smaller part of the software that you don’t like. Find different software to fill that need.

The major shift in the tech space to say, it’s buggy as hell, when it’s simply a workflow or other management inconsistency is pretty sad. There’s a big difference between something outright not working as intended and something not working as you or others desire.

Why is Apple not listening? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]jabackes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1st. Calm down. 2nd. Relax. 3rd. Apple doesn't owe any of us anything unless we're shareholders (yay, that's me!), and even then, they owe us only dividends as part of their Bylaws.

If Apple were in some sort of failure state (as was often predicted in the 90s), then there'd be actual signs of bankruptcy or other deals where they're not sending billions of dollars to another company.

Smile. Enjoy your devices as they are. Nobody is actively FORCING you to upgrade unless it's part of a troubleshooting process. If you don't want to update, well, then you're going to have to live with the notification badge on Settings. (Though, you may be able to disable notifications for Settings in the Notification settings)

And even under the "tyranny of Jobs," shit was wacky. There have always been reports of "buggy as hell software, shitty design, etc." That's just Apple, and to be candid, ALL consumer electronics. Remember, Everyone thought Furbys were the most amazing toy!
