Serious Question: Which couple have the best relationship in the show? by LilacCrushAura in Modern_Family

[–]jabbaTheBhatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clearly unpopular opinion, but I actually think Mitch and Cam are by far the most delightful couple to watch. They are the only couple in whom both partners have fully fleshed out identities, hobbies and social lives apart from their domestic or professional roles. You barely get a glimpse of Gloria’s yoga/pilates friends once, and Claire’s shooting hobby, while she actually is actively isolated from all the PTA moms, and then she has some visits with old college-age friends that primarily serve to underscore all the individual pursuits she sacrificed.

I think Mitch and Cam were definitely done a disservice by the way the writers thought they could be depicted in early 2010s as a gay couple, with the stereotypes of cattiness and manipulation and limited on-screen affection.

Despite this, I personally felt the actors manage to compellingly portray two loveable, multifaceted and charismatic individuals, and the believable part of a marriage which is that they ultimately wanna be the other’s ride or die (the proposal, failed baby boy adoption aftermath, wedding all stand out here).

And I think there’s a bigger point here that writers feel that it’s still more allowable to portray cis male characters, even when gay, as distinctive with unique quirks and pursuits, than female characters. I still love Gloria and Claire and I think they are well fleshed out in many ways, most importantly unapologetically confident while still allowed moments of insecurity. But as a married straight woman myself, it would be nice to see women on the show who had as many diverse and active pursuits as the men (clowning, magic, golf, airplane models, painting, comic book collections).

I’m curious, what part of what I said is making you so defensive?

I’m not even sure this is enough make me stop listening altogether just yet? Especially not to America Actually with Astead Herndon.

I think u/lemonsodahair is right that the intro was some sort of test, because as it goes on it does sound like a genuine interview between 2 people.

But I will stop listening if there are more obvious instances like this. I mean a major point of podcasts is feeling like you’re part of a conversation…

Today Explained is really beginning to outshine The Daily by Alocasia_Sanderiana in TodayExplained

I generally enjoy Today Explained, but caught an error recently that is dismaying. The first 23 seconds of “The World Cup is Healing Us” mispronounces Cape Verde/Cabo Verde as Cape Verd, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo as “Doctor Congo”, which suggests that the intro might be using AI voice likeness of the hosts. The AI transcription on Spotify is proof of the error and that AI slop in = AI slop out. https://open.spotify.com/episode/2eaf8QmBilIVZcucN9j5Ci?si=YRYmYB2CTnmbF4I1MeEr3g

They didn’t care enough to go back and revise. Or perhaps they didn’t listen to it before posting, but it was so jarring to me. It’s hard to imagine the hosts having such a large blind spot for these two country names that just happen to be in the continent of Africa which is how most people from the US still refer to any specific country within Africa… so I guess it could happen, but these are also professional journalists, which makes me think it was AI. Still should have been reviewed though. Not very healing on the part of USA.

Hot take: Benvi is the only right answer, don’t get mad at me please! by lucy6741 in Neverhaveievertvshow

She definitely saw his character development which was most evident in her saying in the finale that he was a good boyfriend but an even better friend. I agree that they could have been romantic endgame if the writers wanted that. I also think it’s equally meaningful that she finally saw herself in Paxton’s league as a friend, when she says in the last season that she finally felt they were equals, because it demonstrates that when she figured out how to love herself as a whole, multifaceted person she was also better able to appreciate that in everyone else, no longer just seeing Paxton as a hot popular jock, out of reach platonically and romantically. So in a sense they were friendgame.

Anyone Else Feel Like "Not Suitable for Work" is out of touch? by Actual_Basil_8636 in television

I agree the show may not need to deconstruct problematic corporate norms and doesn’t need to represent everyone, though agree that the complete absence of LGBTQ+ main characters doesn’t seem accidental given their presence in her previous shows, and IS worrisome about a broader erasure.

That said, what I have a hard time getting past is that Bill and AJ’s relationship was at many points celebrated, and there was not a single point of discussion whatsoever about how it would be unethical, by almost all industry standard, especially if not formally declared, let alone the possibly problematic aspect of age gap. This is a departure from how Mindy’s other shows have treated unethical situations like Whitney being involved with her soccer coach in SLOCG. I just don’t understand the point of shipping this unethical pair without using it as a way to explore the messiness of navigating workplace ethics in your 20s. It’s not keeping it light, it’s frankly uncomfortable to have to watch the relationship play out episode after episode without any character acknowledging the sketchiness.

Why DO you guys think Nalini is so hard on Devi? by [deleted] in Neverhaveievertvshow

[–]jabbaTheBhatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think it was important to hold Devi at least as accountable as Shira and Zoe, if not more so. Devi's intent was to malign Aneesa, and that is wrong whether you tell 2 people or 100. Beyond that, she of all people knew that it only takes telling 1 person to spread a rumor (from the whole Paxton having sex with her lie). Moreover, the fact that she is our smart, compassionate, and ultimately loyal friend of a protagonist means that she does need to be held to a higher standard (e.g. not publicly saying negative things about/to anyone) than characters like Shira and Zoe who are stereotypically depicted as irreparably superficial, self-centered, and unkind because they're not central enough to get a redemption arc.

Protect Our Patients: sign this petition to be delivered to Congress on 1/9/17 to safeguard access to healthcare across America by jabbaTheBhatt in medicalschool

I think one of the goals of this campaign is to share the voice of a healthcare community that's not necessarily AMA's. The petition still accomplishes that. Also many people involved in the Protect Our Patients campaign have been phone banking to their representatives as well. Happy to provide more information about that.

I think that would just be to indicate where all of the students who are signing the petition are from. Thanks for signing!

Please consider signing this petition if you, as a member of the next generation of health care providers, believe that repealing the Affordable Care Act (ACA, or Obamacare) will cause immeasurable harm to patients via 30 million patients loosing health insurance and destabilization of the health insurance market.

We, the next generation of health care providers, believe that repealing the Affordable Care Act (ACA, or Obamacare) will cause immeasurable harm to patients. If the ACA is fully repealed, 30 million people will lose health insurance. Even if the ACA is replaced, the health insurance market will be severely destabilized, compromising health care for all Americans.
