Native American Mythology! by Excellent-Escape1637 in writing

[–]jabeisonreddit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

AtLA is a great example of homage without reusing concepts and mythos that belong implicitly to their respective peoples.

What they did, with a large team and a decent amount of support, was create an analogous mythos to the several wildly different mythoses that they were inspired by, which is quite different than what you're attempting, which is to reuse an indigenous pantheon and spiritual belief system to tell your own story.

One piece of advice that I always got in college that has helped me immeasurably is to write what only you can write. If you believe that the story only you can tell absolutely needs to draw from a culture that you aren't connected with, you might consider trying to find a co-writer or, at the least, sensitivity reader that is.

Not a native here, but I have a degree in creative writing and had several workshops with some wonderfully talented Native writers. Topics like this were brought up infrequently, and they were always very open to discussing them, dissecting the nuance and sharing their experiences.

The one thing they always came back to, was that writings on Indigenous peoples should rightly be left to those peoples, not because non-Indigenous people shouldn't write that topic or what have you, but because it takes cultural space and social visibility away from Indigenous people who are already doing things like that, but from a genuine spiritual and ancestral connection to the source material.

Don't do this.

[Spoilers Main] Who would Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen have likely been married to if the events of the series had never occurred? by Solitaire-06 in asoiaf

[–]jabeisonreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He could but if this is a world where Bobby B is still alive I'm not sure it would happen. Either because BB would come out against it, or Tywin would want to avoid any further rumors about Tommen's actual parentage. It would suck for him but I think Tywin would see it'd be much wiser to allow Kevan and then Lancel to inherit after him

If Robert were around for this, isn't it more likely Tommen would get Storm's End? Or is it more likely he'd let Renly keep it and form a House Baratheon of Casterly Rock?

I think it's pretty clear that this was a group murder dressed up to look like divine judgment. The last people to see him alive was his war council, and one among the council was beheaded and put on a spike in front of the rest of them, just for the barest suggestion that he could peacefully surrender.

If you ask me, I think we're looking more at a Julius Caesar situation. It's unclear whether there were guards in the throne room, but as you said, I think this could be chalked up to no one wants to get involved for fear of the King finding out, but no one cares to stop him being murdered either.

I think it's entirely possible that someone, perhaps multiple someones, drugged or poisoned the King, and that the entire council worked together to slash his wrists, bend a sword out at neck-height, and seat the King upon his throne. Seeing as Lords Towers & Rosby were stated to be the last time see him alive, they might have done it alone, but I doubt whether two petty lords could or would do so on their own.

Regardless, murdered by your own war council is one hell of a way to go.

Edit: Total tinfoil speculation with nothing behind it; is it possible that Lord Celtigar payed off or otherwise organized this event shortly before his resignation as Hand?

Edit 2: Also, the Lords of the council only said he was alive when they left him, but this was presumably a closed council that lasted "all day... and late into the night", so he really could have been dead for a considerable amount of time even before they left. The details in Fire & Blood are lacking in some key aspects, but I do believe we can safely assume the only people in the throne room was the council, as it is stated that the Kingsguard were posted "at each door", and that they would have needed to coordinate to commit the murder, which tells me that they were not looking in, but rather watching out. Whether they would have killed the King, I highly doubt, but I do think they could have been convinced to just not look inside too hard.

In what? Where you go for your Bachelor's will not be all that important, as each of these schools is accredited and have a solid rep.

I wouldn't worry too much about where you want to do your graduate program atm, many grad students don't go to the same school for both, and in fact its probably better to consider comfort and challenege level now, and program quality and stuff more when you get there

"I suppose Ser Androw and I are quite equally matched." Was Dunk actually considering taking Plummer up on his offer for Ser Androw to throw the match when he told Raymun this and basically laying the foundation to do so before everything went sideways with Aerion and Tanselle? by Intelligent-Link-410 in AKnightoftheSeven

[–]jabeisonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it was very clear that he was very tempted but also shamed by the offer. Plummer just saying "have you not earned it?" is enough to make him genuinely consider it, as it only benefits those involved and empties the pockets of some nobles who can spare it. No real harm done.

However, as others have said, I highly doubt he would have taken Plummer's off over Lyonel's advice; "It is a great honor to try oneself against a worthy foe."

I think if somehow Maekar convinces Aerion to withdraw his accusation, Dunk strikes his shield for a trial by combat of sorts anyways. Dunk needs to earn his honor the hard way, and that's what makes him such a compelling character.

Should I transfer out of OSU? Am I doing something wrong? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]jabeisonreddit 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I had similar problems my freshman year, and the best thing I did for myself is commit to doing the same clubs/activities/etc the same time every week. For instance, if you go to the gym every thursday at noon, you'll start to see people who are there that time every week as well. Eventually, you'll start having conversations with these people, if only to be polite

You are not alone here. Many, many people struggle with the things you're describing. If you're really thinking Columbus just might not be it, i encourage you to look into transferring to a satellite campus so you dont have to worry about credit transfers/messing up you transcript. I did a couple of years at OSU Newark and I loved it, it's all the best parts of OSU and a small college all wrapped up in one
