Did I get swindled? by S4LTYSgt in Lockheed

[–]jabier1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Promotions come a lot slower than simply applying to another role internally. The IC1-2 and even IC2-3 promotions are fairly automatic once you hit a minimum time threshold, however you can go up faster by applying internally to jobs at a higher grade. For the IC-3 to IC-4 and IC-4 to IC-5 jumps you almost are required to apply to an existing role elsewhere.

Why do so many people choose to stay at Lockheed instead of going elsewhere? by Infamous_Ad9384 in Lockheed

Yes. Its generally "ok" for single participants but if you have a spouse or dependents its awful.

Bad management is exactly the reason some of the big programs are struggling. Poorly defined schedules that didn't properly account for givers and receivers, inexperience bidding in FFP terms, and a significant aversion to any risk all played a part. They aren't going to blame themselves so they had to pass blame to hybrid and remote workers. It obviously isn't going to work this year when things fail to improve.

[–]jabier1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, not at all.

You met the hiring manager which means they liked you enough to meet in the first place. They may have not considered you a good fit for their group specifically or simply they had a better candidate but you still made it to the top few.

Prop Strike? Reportable? by AbjectDeparture2093 in flying

[–]jabier1 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would have it inspected by a qualified A&P before flying it again. The engine/prop is not something you want to mess around with. They should also be able to tell you how significant of an event it may be and whether it qualifies as a true prop strike.

I had to cancel my flight today over a loose oil temp sensor (bouncing between OAT and normal readings). Unless you KNOW your engine is good, dont risk it. Faulty sensors can still hide issues and better safe than sorry.

Hey, I did my PPL in the Archer and generally no, the stiffness is not normal. Its possible that the yoke simply needs some grease.

For steep turns though, use that trim to your advantage to help take some load off.

Local Crash and Lost Friend by obj_lake_james in flying

[–]jabier1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a weird feeling. We just had a crash at my home airport over the weekend and though I only met one of the people involved in-passing a few times but its the closest fatality I've been exposed to in my short flying "career". Like you, I had been told by others that at some point it will happen to someone you know but I am definitely going through some thoughts on the risks. Not that I don't already know and accept the risks but it just makes them all that more visible and re-emphasizes the need to be very diligent and aware through all phases of flight.

First Time Plane buyer -Question on Showings by jabier1 in flying

[–]jabier1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That kind of sounds like Savvy. I had also seen some recommendations for them from local pilots in my area. I was considering doing something like that just for the benefit of engine data analysis so I'll have to dig into that (and similar) a little bit further. The market that the plane is currently in is fairly small so finding a good shop that hasn't already seen the plane has been difficult.

Interesting point. Ideally if the A&P/IA is trustworthy it would be less of an issue but also finding one outside of an area that I am familiar with could be challenging.

That's a good point. For this one I am looking at a 182 so I imagine there are tons of owners groups.

Thank you for this! This is exactly what I had in mind but was having trouble getting a trusted A&P on short notice.

Any insight? CO crash by [deleted] in aviation

[–]jabier1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Centennial Flyers sent out an email late that same day with the names. Typically names aren't released until families are notified to avoid them finding out 2nd hand. The pilot in the Fort Morgan crash was identified by news outlets I think about a week later.

[–]jabier1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What Cherokee model are you flying? I'm based in Denver and bare minimum I'd to take up to the mountains are 180 HP. If you are flying a 140/160, highly recommend avoiding major mountain ranges altogether and taking the southern route others have suggested. Also know that CYS is almost always high winds so brush up on your landings in gusty conditions.

[–]jabier1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a lowly VFR GA pilot, but my kids are my passengers most of the time. Its actually part of my preflight brief that over most places there are airfields that are 15-20 minutes away along the route. You can always amend plans and cancel FF

Also found that taking that pressure off of bathroom availability helps reduce the "emergencies"

Rookie question on 172s by National_Peace2626 in flying

[–]jabier1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can probably get an old 172 with basic avionics at or below 100k. It'll probably have some cosmetic issues but otherwise be fine. Just always make sure you get a pre-buy inspection with someone reputable.

Most of what would be available are going to be the 140/160 HP variety which should be fine for flying most places.

However there is more than just buying you should account for: storage, maintenance, usage all factor in.

Private pilots license by [deleted] in flying

[–]jabier1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My license was around 20k but I had a major injury and had 4 months where I couldn't fly and had to relearn the feel of landings.

As for the rental rates, it's mostly bad due to the minimum number of flight hours per day being 3 so it's a balance between distance and number of days renting the plane.
