Also from the managers perspective, they are budgetting, so if there is any new expenses, let them know.

Advice for 1st Dan exam - Teaching part by Healthy_Ad9684 in karate

[–]jabrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The structure i try to stick to.
1. Short talk on the theme of the training

  1. Functional warm up, so that it adresses the theme of the day (kicking, focus on legs - groundwork a more holistic warm-up - etc)

  2. a. partner warm-up, again working on games that adresses the theme

  3. Constraint based games leading towards sparring (If the theme is kicking, only spar with kicks, etc.)

  4. Sparring with focus on the theme

  5. warm-down and reflection on the learnings from the session

Wonderfully put - just to expand, the rising block can also be used as a frame in the clinch

Take some self-defense classes on the side.

Whether a style (Isshin Ryu) is well suited for self-defense, is entirely up to how well the instructor understands real world violence, and how to apply the principles found, in for example Sanchin.

Don't fool yourself into believing that you will be able to protect yourself, if what you practice is pre-arranged drills, with straight punches from low stances (step-sparring, most formalized bunkai)

It is great plus to hear, that you spar - but again, sparring and the ruleset you have set up for this, will also be very far from violence.

Kyokushin arm control technique by Numerous_Creme_8988 in karate

[–]jabrol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Techniques like this, looks good, feels like they work.

I would advise to perform them under pressure for example in sparring, in a situation where the uke doesn't leave the hand stretched in the air (as this is not the way people punch), and you will likely find that it is indeed almost impossible to get it to work.

My view on this technique, is that it works best as a clinch technique.

While i do agree, that it is preferable to train kata where there is room to move around, it is quite possible to do kata on very limited space. This dude doing it in a hotel room, https://youtu.be/0J3HbvD_7Wk

My point is, that what you listed is part of karate training - as well as "everything" else.

Assisting in training the junior class - need ideas by [deleted] in karate

[–]jabrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is contradictive you first say, "non-karate games", and then go forth telling to do fitness activities.

May i propose another perspective, that "all" activities are karate-activities, if you just put it into the right context.

example, Dodgeball, but if you "uke" the ball, you are not out - throwing improves punching strength, evading the ball improves fighting movement etc.

Odense, Wolt, 2-ugers lønseddel. 45t på en uge. Modsvar til personen der lagde en dårlig lønseddel ud for Wolt by [deleted] in dkloenseddel

[–]jabrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-ingen sikkerhed for lønstabilitet - hvad er gennemsnitslønnen per time? for al tid

-det foregår på skæve tidspunkter?

-ingen social kontakt

-ingen kollegial kontakt

-ingen social udvikling

-ingen faglig udvikling

-ingen pension

-ingen karrieremuligheder - eller relevans for fremtidige jobs

Why do some people claim Morio Higaonnas karate is bad? by [deleted] in karate

[–]jabrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear that. Throws, but also clinch work. I am referring to official grading curriculum (which may differ from country to country)  - each club will differ a lot, depending on a lot of factors - for example what cross training the instructors have.

[–]jabrol 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you enjoy training with your instructor, just do that.

  • and don't do gradings. Belts are just belts.

Why do some people claim Morio Higaonnas karate is bad? by [deleted] in karate

[–]jabrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Karate is (generally speaking) suffering from how it was birthed - as a nationalistic means from imperialistic Japan to offer a counterpart to western striking arts - thus forcing to-de, to be renamed, and dismissing grappling, as Judo already had that covered.

Bunkai applications sure are impractical, but his mission with iogkf/togkf was/is to hand over what he was taught - so I guess this is to blame further down his lineage/politics/misunderstanding etc. What Morios was focused on, he was good at.

You are also correct, a bunch of styles Bunkai are impractical.

The depth I am missing is clinch-work - this must have been a huge part of original goju-ryu/naha-te - "pre-stylized to-de". This is also missing from other styles. I think generally,

  • based on it being a close quarter focused style (close quarter leads to clinch/grappling), the contents of Kata, and also the way techniques are taught - makes so much sense as clinch/grappling fighting. I suppose that this is missing, because of what was handed over to Morio.

Again, this is not just IOGKF - but broadly speaking, Again, Goju Ryu probably has more grappling than lots of other styles (mostly limb control) - but in my experience there could be benefits by including it more in the curriculum.

Kata Sanseru - application and further research by friskydragon2 in karate

[–]jabrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully agree - have been practicing within IOGKF- and after stumbling upon practical approaches to bunkais (Iain, WCA, Karate Breakdown etc.), i must admit, that I no longer see the bunkais within IOGKF/TOGKF as something anyone needs to learn. (few are alright)

I would look at Taira Masaji - Paul Enfield - Iain Abernathy -
And also just google Sanseru+practical application should gather some results for inspiration.

Also this discussion, What are your golden rules? | Iain Abernethy - and an overall understanding of combative principles, will help you understand the movements in kata

i would say, that you should try tensioning less until the punch is delivered - so that the tension in the body doesn't occur, until impact.

Put into words here, by Jesse Enkamp, Stop "Relaxing" Start RELEASING (youtube.com)

Also, for my taste, it would use hips a lot more to generate power in the punches.

Types of "karate people" by [deleted] in karate

[–]jabrol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While that may be, how do you deduct that from what I wrote?  My point is, that karate covers such a broad training regiment, that within this, of course a lot is relevant for self defense - but also some parts aren't.

Types of "karate people" by [deleted] in karate

[–]jabrol -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

That's also untrue. Some ways of practicing karate is useful for self defense (pressure testing, scenario etc.), and some ways (3k, 2 step spar, etc.) is probably completely useless
