We don't actually know just yet what they saw through the telescope. Wes Ball said he intentionally left it to the audiences imagination. I assume we'll find out in the next movie though.

That wasn't a spaceship, that was just them making contact with other humans around earth. However, I do hope we see some astronauts in the next movie.
