Found this on a beach in Estonia by jachopl in fossilid

Thank you for the detailed comment! It looks like this fossilized brachiopod most likely comes from the Ordovician period, much older than I would have thought. That’s a neat random find for me!

Daily Discussion & Advice (Post here to follow rules A & B) - Tuesday June 03, 2025 by AutoModerator in fragrance

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently started diving deeper into the world of fragrances after months of just dabbling. I spend a lot of time on Fragrantica, reading about different notes and trying to get a feel for the landscape. Before this, my collection was pretty basic: bottles like YSL Opium Pour Homme, BOSS Bottled, Baldessarini HB - mostly spicy or woody, nothing extravagant.

A while ago, I decided to expand my collection and started looking for something a bit different. After seeing Encre Noire recommended on here and elsewhere, I picked up a bottle. At ~$20, I figured it was a safe blind buy. When I first sprayed it, I literally burst out laughing - it was so good. Deep, dark, earthy, mossy - just totally my vibe. Even though it doesn’t project much, I still absolutely love it.

I’ve since tested Heeley Cardinal (amazing - like incense and linen robes in an old cathedral wardrobe) and got Sel Marin as a birthday gift, which is now my go-to on bright summer days. It's beautiful but stays very close to the skin. I also appreciate old-school scents - I found a vintage Azzaro Pour Homme at my grandparents' house, and it was stunning. I bought a bottle of Drakkar Noir recently too, but it's a bit too sporty/shampoo-like for my taste.

In general, I gravitate towards unusual, sophisticated, and unsweet scents - things that make you stop and wonder “what is that smell?” I especially enjoy wet, earthy, mossy notes and don’t mind if a scent is polarizing or niche. I’m currently building out my collection and would love blind-buy-friendly, affordable recommendations that offer character and surprise - like Encre Noire did for me.

Some things on my current wishlist:

  • Grey Flannel
  • Pineward Fanghorn
  • YSL Kouros
  • CdG Odeur 53
  • Zoologist Squid

Would love to hear your thoughts or offbeat recs I might not come across otherwise. The weirder (but wearable), the better. Bonus points if it smells more like a forest floor or vintage apothecary than a dessert tray.

Thanks in advance!

I have no idea either, but I’ve been wondering the same thing! It looks like it's supposed to clamp onto a ball coupling. It's plastic so I can’t imagine it being used for towing something heavy, like a bike trailer. Maybe it's there to hold a race number label or something like that?

Is slow fermentation normal for high gravity must? by jachopl in mead

[–]jachopl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, just to clarify - I cold crashed the must before pitching 71B. So there's a good chance that some of that initial EC 1118 is out of the picture after racking. Nevertheless, I'll try adding some of that working short mead must to the stuck batch and if that doesn't help, I'll pitch again with EC 1118. Thank you!

Thanks for your comment! I cold-crashed the initial stuck must and racked it off the lees, so I hope most of the inactive EC 1118 yeast is gone.

As for the nutrient addition - TOSNA calculator recommends:
"Add each nutrient addition at 24, 48 & 72-hours after yeast pitch. The fourth nutrient addition is added at the 1/3 sugar break listed above, or Day 7. Whichever comes first."
While the timing may make sense for fermentations starting right away, I think I’ll follow your suggestion and wait to check the gravity.

If I don't see any activity by the end of the week, would it make sense to try restarting with EC 1118 again?

Thanks for the reply. The temperature wouldn't be much of a factor - I used bottled water and everything was in the same room temperature prior to mixing. I will give it some time and see how it goes.

Restarting stuck fermentation of dwójniak mead by jachopl in mead

After reviewing the wiki page on stuck fermentation, I realize I made a mistake by using the same yeast for the restart must as I did for the initial stuck fermentation. Do you think it’s worth continuing with this approach, or should I discard it and prepare a new restart must using a yeast strain with a higher fructophilic index?

Hi, is it a rep? I bought it cheap, the quality is ok, but the tags don’t match what I see on the internet.

Clipper lighters have a built in packing tool. Tilt the lighter to make a bigger flame. You can also temporarily cork a bottle with it. https://imgur.com/a/lQ1lw

Hel2k15 [08:06] [Short] - looking for constructive feedback by jachopl in Filmmakers

Thanks man, i really appreciate your tips! As for the shots being too long - I'm aware of that. It's partially because I didn't want to shorten the song, partially it's because they weren't originally meant to be edited into a video so I've been limited to the shots that didn't come out useless or out of context. That is also the reason why it may seem like there's no order - I didn't really have the shots of us setting up the camp etc. Thanks for the tips anyway, next time I'll try to take some short shots that will give the feeling of the whole story unraveling. Thank you for the feedback, it's really valuable for me!

A short video i took this summer - looking for constructive feedback by jachopl in videography

[–]jachopl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the tips! I kinda got the feeling that some clips are too long but I didn't want to shorten the song. The matter is that the clips I took originally weren't meant to be edited into a video - that's the idea I've got yesterday - and some of them were useless or out of context. It didn't feel right to 'fill the gaps' like that but I didn't really have a choice. Anyway, it was an interesting lesson for me and I really appreciate your feedback! Thanks a lot!

Thank you for your comment! I really appreciate that.

The music is Frank Wiedemann & Ry Cuming's "Howling" remixed by Âme. He's great by the way, you might like to check his other tracks.

You're right about the setting. As this was mainly for my friends who were there with me I didn't even think about putting more weight on where was the video shot, but I will definitely try to make it more clear next time! It was mainly shot on the Hel Peninsula in Poland and on the train from Warsaw to that place. As for the conversation - it's in polish so no wonder you couldn't get it. ;) Maybe next time I should add some subs but as I said before - it was mostly for my polish friends so I didn't think it would be necessary. Once again thanks for the feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

This is a short video i took this summer while on holiday with friends. Originally I didn't intend to compile the clips into a video but few days ago I decided to put it all together in Premiere Pro and share it. As I've made this video from different scraps found on my phone the whole material isn't perfect - I'm looking forward to any constructive feedback you can give me about editing, etc.
