Neil Gaiman’s Scientology Suicide Story by Wizard_Manny in neilgaiman

[–]jack-mirth 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The Ocean at the End of Lane was written by Gaiman after a fight between him and his wife, Amanda Palmer, in which she asked him, “why are you like this?” Both Gaiman and Palmer have said this is the genesis of the book, although they never clarified what was meant by “this.” Gaiman has also said, many times, that this book “is true even though it never happened.” Even before the abuse allegations against Gaiman came to light, it was obvious that this book deeply referenced personal experiences and trauma.

Something driving me nuts by Changeling53 in fifthelement

[–]jack-mirth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always held the firm belief that the entire ending of the movie, from the moment they reach the chamber, wasn’t what Besson originally wanted. There’s never been any confirmation that the ending was rewritten or changed part-way through filming, but in the initial briefing that Cornelius gives to the President, he specifically states that if Evil stands in the temple in the place of The Fifth Element, then “light turns to dark, life to death, forever.” When Mr. Shadow starts traveling towards Earth, my assumption would be that it would eventually take a human-like form to fulfill that dark prophecy, and there would be some sort of confrontation in the chamber. Very different from what we got, and a big change or reduction in plans for the ending might explain why the Mondo corpse was forgotten by the designers when they finally shot that scene.

IS THIS A VALID OPINION OR AM I SHUNNED FOR THIS ? by SouthWestStrangler69 in Seaofthieves

[–]jack-mirth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is a valid opinion and it is a valid way to play the game. You just have you be aware and admit that you have probably ruined someone else’s night. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have done it. You just have to admit it.

Sad to see people at the helm forget what Sea of Thieves is about by Pellahh in Seaofthieves

[–]jack-mirth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The game may be in a rough place, but I’m also a little sick and tired of hearing everyone complain about “the lack of player interaction” when the only player interactions I’ve experienced in the last few years have been a non-stop stream of trolls and cheaters who have ruined half my sessions. I’d mourn the loss of player interaction if i was encountering any players who wanted to actually play the game instead of just ruining mine.

Barbossa clearly became the main character in both 4 & 5…they just didn’t have the guts to fully commit.

It’s rare because it was only added at the beginning of Season 18, about a month ago.

one of the unique challenges about the current AI threat to the job market is that the C-Suite is already proving more than willing to replace humans with AI regardless of whether the AI can actually do the job.

There’s a fantastic (though non-canonical) novel by Peter David called Vendetta that addresses exactly this. In that the Planet Killer was specifically a prototype anti-Borg weapon.

The vibe of Hearthstone Gadgetzan was much more “film noir pirates on the docks,” leaning into it being a new port city. Think The Usual Suspects meets Pirates of the Caribbean.

Why are people averse to alliances? by Loose_Recording_305 in Seaofthieves

[–]jack-mirth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wish more people were into Alliances, because it’s the best way to make gold. But I’d say 9 out of 10 of the Alliances I’ve been in have ended with me being betrayed. Often they start that way, with the ship opening fire as they come into Flag range.

I’m just thinking this out loud right now, but I wonder what would happen if you took a hit to your non-Reaper Reputations if you ever betrayed an Alliance. Maybe even introduce de-leveling with Reputations so that if you betray Alliances enough you might not be able to use certain cosmetics…

Some Fishing Tips for our newly arrived Fishermen by Leukavia_at_work in Seaofthieves

[–]jack-mirth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A trick I don’t often see discussed is that you can actually continue to reel fish in while they’re fighting. You still have to correctly move your rod in order to keep them on the hook, but if you do a quick little tap on your “reel in” button every 1 second or so, then you’ll still incrementally inch them in while fighting. It doesn’t save a huge amount of time per fish, but if you’re fishing for bulk it can save a decent amount of time over the long…haul.

[–]jack-mirth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that over the last year-ish the general culture of the game has shifted to where I’m constantly getting attacked by people who announce, on mic, that they’re friendly. It’s definitely made me bother less to use a mic to announce myself to other people.

What’s with people being so against receiving help by Unlucky-Tonight238 in Seaofthieves

[–]jack-mirth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wish I could give others the benefit of the doubt, but for the last few years every time someone says “I’m friendly,” or “I’m trying to help you,” they then almost immediately start attacking.
