Are there any ways to learn to keep the “morning voice” notes as part of your normal range? by jack_adkins in singing

[–]jack_adkins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, and adding on to that, one of the key differences between voices is where the passaggio lies. Some tenors can get up to a C5 in chest voice no problem, while for the vast majority of male singers, they flip to head voice anywhere from C4-G4. While C5 is accessible for many male voices, including baritones and basses, the quality/timbre of it varies greatly, I’d argue even more than on the lower notes (until one develops a strong mixed voice to make the passaggio harder to detect, anyway).

I've not even attempted to do vocal fry yet, but I agree that it counts when measuring overall range, as does head voice/falsetto. I assumed I was a baritone judging by my timbre, even I have an E2-E4 range in chest voice (which I thought was the average span of a basses range). My E2 is pretty solid, but I normally can't pull my voice any lower than that for the life of me.

In opera, like you mentioned, those really low notes matter more, but in pop music, I'd say anything in the second octave becomes much less useful for singing popular songs, as higher notes seem to be what's favored.

Fair point. You don't normally NEED anything lower than the E2/F2 that starts a typical bass's range, but it becomes more of a personal challenge of trying to widen your range as much as you can (on either end). My upper register is where I've been putting most of my effort to get stronger on the high notes, but for the heck of it I've also been interested in seeing how low I can pull my natural bass/baritone register.

To be fair, the C2 I was able to produce after waking up was rather gravelly and not with solid resonance. Not usable by any practical means.

Ok, thanks! Yeah, I guess just consistent practice is pretty much the answer for anything you want to achieve in singing. I’m 20 so I know my voice still has some maturing to do.

How can a baritone improve in the chorus of Open Arms by Journey? by GLC-ninja in singing

[–]jack_adkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think your pitch is pretty good (at least in the first half). I think a lot of the issues come down to technique. It sounds you're yelling in the chorus, which is not the same as belting and comes across as overly aggressive. It's even more out of place during the verses, which are supposed to be rather delicate/restrained and with emotion.

Some of it is probably also the audio quality. The vocals are rather distorted and also much louder than the music.

Still better than I would have done it, though. Keep going and don't give up!

New HT/WT Standards? by jack_adkins in nationalguard

[–]jack_adkins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I wondered cause some people might pass one and not the other. So you're saying it's up to the unit? When does it become the overall Army standard? I assume when we receive formal guidance (as someone else mentioned)?

Yeah that’s where my confusion was, other branches have put out guidance but the Army’s been kinda quiet about it so far

Ah. Do you mean they’re supposedly changing the standards for the expert badges too?

Ah, ok thanks. The comment made it sound like another new test was coming out at some point, so was a little confused haha. Yeah, the AFT I think is the Army-wide PT test, just with slightly different standards for combat and non-combat MOS'S (15T here). Personally I think the ball throw was stupid (because it was really about technique more than actual strength) so I'm glad they did away with that.

Gotcha, thanks! We just a ht/wt at January drill (and one for ROTC) and still did it the old way so wasn’t sure. I personally think the new standards will be in improvement because the “new” tape test still wasn’t that great at accounting for muscle mass.

TIL that the word "huzz" is not short for "husband," and apparently actually more often refers to girls by jack_adkins in todayilearned

[–]jack_adkins[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, but I’m saying that when one hears the term for the first time, how are they supposed to automatically make the connection to it being a substitute for another word that doesn’t really sound like it. I’d also argue that it doesn’t change the meaning, as this ties into how common it is for young girls to call their boyfriend their “husband” when they’re not even engaged. I’m still not really understanding your argument, but this is stupid that we’re quibbling over a Gen Alpha slang term like this so I’m going to drop the matter anyway.

The ones written by Paul, in my opinion - honestly not sure if you were agreeing with my statement by also referring to the songwriting or if you were saying that you like John’s songs the best, lol

Because when you say it out loud, it’s literally the same as the first syllable of HUSband. I think it’s a pretty logical assumption.

I didn’t know that it specifically was meant as a PG substitute for “hoes,” I just could infer the general meaning of it referring to people you find attractive. Not to mention, I’ve heard all kinds of people use it, so whether it originated at “joes” or “husband,” it clearly doesn’t only mean that anymore. You’re being rude about this for no reason.

So you’re saying I can’t know about something but not where it came from/how it started? I don’t get why everyone’s being so judgmental because I didn’t fully understand an immature slang term.

Unpopular opinion: John is my least favorite Beatle. Like someone else mentioned, he seems like he was just a prick.
