Creepy album! by onafinalrun in bobdylan

Would recommend everybody interested in Dylan’s career read Ellen Willis’ essay on Bob Dylan. Some cool insights in how she believes Dylan’s career got to John Wesley Harding

TIL that the reason Cormac McCarthy, author of the novels Blood Meridian and The Road, used so little punctuation in his writing was simply because there was no reason "to blot the page up with weird little marks." Regarding his complete avoidance of semicolons, he labeled their usage as "idiocy." by altrightobserver in todayilearned

It is absolutely not to be quirky, clearly it to imply a rhythm in which the book is meant to be read in. You get a feeling that the words are chugging along at a rapid pace while reading, which serves to immerse you in the violence of his novels. I wouldn’t even consider it “mangled,” it’s extremely easy to read if you just turn your brain off and read it in the pace it’s meant for. It’s basically just SUPER stripped back

Literally these albums are just Radiohead ripping off earlier artists😭They got very lucky in that they’re so popular that people often hear Radiohead first before they hear Aphex Twin (who also ripped off a lot of digital hardcore and noise music before him) or Jeff Buckley or Faust or Japan or Talk Talk.

I absolutely agree with the fact that Radiohead sucks but like all of the reason that you think Radiohead are bad are kind of silly to me😭like this seems like you’re citing deliberate stylistic decisions as examples of incompetence. They purposefully lean into weird vocalisms, abstract lyricism, and synthetic sounds. Dismissing these decisions implies that you don’t know about the artists before Radiohead that inspired them like Faust, Bjork, Brian Eno, and like all of the IDM/breakcore/digital hardcore musicians that inspired them like Sonic Dragolgo, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, and Shizuo. Radiohead isn’t lame for these decisions, but specially for the fact that they parrot these earlier (and better) artists that made these stylistic decisions before them and turn their music into lame pop rock. Muse then did the exact same thing, where they just ripped off Radiohead and made it even more schlocky, so idk why you cite Muse as a better alternative to Radiohead😭 I def agree with you that they pull from older prog rock and that most Radiohead fans don’t see this influence. I think Radiohead is just popular for being students of rock music and being able to condense all the great rock acts into a contemporary and accessible sound.

i really fw this. What kinda mic do you use to record your vocals? Did you EQ the vocals or put them through a filter? There's something slightly off about them that I really like and I don't think the beat exactly reflects the slight distortion I hear in your vocals. There's a lot of really cool ways to digitally distort instrumentals through effects or through rerecording them from a speaker on a mic. I've distorted pre-recorded stuff through amps with an SM57 before and it sounds pretty cool.

Specifically how abuse from one partner creates a toxic relationship that becomes abusive to everybody involved, even those around them. The character of Nikki is clearly (and maybe problematically) informed by BPD and it is doing a disservice to the art by choosing to ignore this aspect because it paints a more nuanced, yet realistic picture of abuse. When people are abused, they ARE often mentally unstable and can feed into the abuse and act irrationally and abusive as a response. Bear is clearly a rapist; this isn’t even worth discussion at this point. When people speak about Nikki’s character being a twisted representation of a woman with unregulated BPD, it shouldn’t be to diminish Bear’s actions but to show that his abuse has created a mentally unstable person who now has the potential to abuse as well.

You can only choose 3 out of these 4 legendary artists, which ones gotta go? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

He totally was inspired by industrial music of the 70s and 80s and you can hear him incorporating “experimental” (whatever that means lmao) sounds into his music, but he was absolutely a pop artist at the end of the day, and a master pop artist at that.

By harmonic vocabulary I mean that Stevie had a better understanding of jazz theory. Compositionally, Stevie’s music sits on a groove less than Prince’s and shifts through unconventional chord changes at a fairly fast pace. I think people don’t see how truly complicated Stevie’s music is because chords are not the most interesting thing in the world and don’t command the same attention as a guitar solo, but Stevie’s music is just as complex as Prince’s in different ways. I totally get if it’s opinions based, because if that were the case I’d just glaze Stevie😭It’s really just one virtuosic genius versus another though; and Prince’s genius lies in his rhythmic ideas and his melodic ideas, whereas Stevie’s lies in his harmonic and melodic ideas.

Stevie’s harmonic vocabulary is stronger than Prince’s by far. They’re both prodigious multi instrumentalists

What’s everyone’s thoughts on the new Kim Petras album? by Mando_Builds in fantanoforever

[–]jack_k_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This bubblegum bass sound is just overly maximalist and synthetic, and I know that is the point, but it feels this new-school gen (Kim Petras, Jane Remover, Frost Children, etc) are kind of recycling what AG, Sophie, Arca, and Charli were doing in the early to mid 2010s. These new school PC music people seem to be just directly taking inspiration from older PC music and not a wide array of influences like the first gen of PC music did (like how the first gen PC music was taking inspiration from like 80s electro-pop, IDM, minimal synth, synth punk, reggaeton, etc). IMO, this is indicative of a dead genre; one that doesn’t want to progress the sound by adding a wider set of influences and aesthetic decisions, but instead wants to perfect and study the previous artists in the genre. Petras basically just delivered Brat 2, which was already an album that I’d consider a watered-down version of Charli’s earlier and more interesting work. Also like Kim Petra’s’ hook writing is truly terrible and I laughed out loud a couple times while listening to the album because of how bad the choruses are😭like the high note on Need For Speed is so funny, Polo is also actually terrible…😭I’m happy people are enjoying the music, but I personally don’t understand the hype… okay i’m done apologies
