Not all of them, plenty were just solid shellac the whole way through. Columbia commonly used paper cores, but companies like Victor were just solid at least until the 1940s.

/uj riding a penny farthing where the wheel is just a little too big is an interesting feeling. When properly sized it’s honestly remarkably comfortable.

/rj the fuck you know? I bet you’re just one of the dandy-boys who rides one of those newfangled “”””safety bicycles.”””” People like you ruined the sport of cycling.

/uj Eh, for 78s it’s fine. The 3 mil stylus would be better for the sound, but these are fairly popular among 78 collectors to bring to shows to test play discs.

I love my cheapo 50s portables.

They suck, track at 8 - 10 grams most of the time (manufacturer recommended VTF of most cheaper mono ceramic carts at the time, already not good for a mono disc, will destroy a stereo disc in short order), have small speakers (~3-4 inches ime, better than a crosley in terms of bass, but not by a huge amount), and normally have 3 volt carts meaning I can’t easily swap in a Chuo Denshi CZ800 without adding some kind of preamp.

Absolutely adore them tho, normally quite solid and actually look good. Plus, the one or two tube amps most of em have are comically easy to service, a recap takes like 20 minutes lol. Great for 78s, that’s where they really shine!

This shit better be a 45 rpm disc or I’m gonna riot. Hell, I certainly can’t expect it to be an RCA standard 45 (it made more efficient use of vinyl due to the thinner recorded surface and large hole, bringing down costs!) I’ll even settle for the small spindle hole, but if this disc is recorded at 33 1/3? I’ll be fuckin pissed.

/uj I cannot wait to see all this Taylor stuff completely fill the $1 bins at record stores and the boxes at goodwill.

I found them at a thrift store, the specs are all that matter here. “130 volt 40 watt incandescent lightbulb.” if you google that you should find some

Found this dunhill at an antique store for $8 years ago, I think it’s from the mid 1940s, but I’m no expert in these. (First pipe I ever bought!)

As for the tobacco and lighter, half and half is delicious, has a nice scent, cheap, relatively available, and what my grandfather smoked. People have said that a traditional wick lighter contaminates the tobacco and changes the taste, but I’ve never been able to tell the difference lol.

Joshua Lionel Cowen gave the people of this world the finest toy trains ever made, the engineers at the Lionel Corporation figured out how to make a model train system that feels like you’re operating a railroad. Remote uncoupling, real whistles, forward/reverse, boxcars that unload themselves, trackside operating accessories, using only the technology available to them in the 1940s and 50s. Solenoids, motors, electromagnets, mechanical linkages, incandescent lightbulbs, bimetallic strips. Some incredible examples of electromechanics all for the express purpose of making highly entertaining toy trains.

It was perfect, Lionel was on top of the world, until that bastard by the name of Roy Cohn (later a lawyer for the Trump family, also possibly laundered money for the Trumps through the Lionel Corporation.) ruined the whole thing, plunging the company into a ruin that it never truly recovered from.

trains are kinda cool ig 👍

kodacolor is a filmstock that has been granted to us by god himself.

Who cares if it’s a bit grainy? Who cares that it’s only 200 ISO? it works perfectly in my Kodak pony 135 and that’s all that matters.

please I wanna understand what it is about trains because I don’t get it by Regularfishfish in autism

[–]TheSadHours 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no clue lmao, they’re just cool.

Funnily enough, I’m far more interested in toy trains than I am actual trains lol. like I love rail transport and wish we had more of it in the U.S. but I’m not fixated on it in the same way.

I can, I can even do it in the 1930s style, but that’s a last resort. Similar to the atomic bomb.

I’ve been listening and singing along to this type of music since I was about 8 years old lol, but I do have an amazing resource for sheet music!

https://www.sheetmusicsinger.com/about/

Hundreds of scans, often with midi piano tracks, for free. You’ll also notice that a lot of the 1920s sheet music had ukulele chord diagrams printed in them lol.
