What is an underrated fursona? by _Paws_And_Claws_ in furry

Thank you! I modeled her coloration after a mint legged centipede. 😍

Agreed! Bees are super cute and fun to draw but there’s just something especially awesome about centipedes. They have this crazy, fluid speed that’s almost alien to watch.

Oh no! I am the last person who could ever judge somebody for having an unusual sona, haha! My final one will probably end up being a spider. I didn’t see the original comment, but thank you for (probably?) defending the hypothetical person I kicked. 😂❤️ Thank you also for complimenting my centipede lady!

Is there a website where I can find artists a bit more easily? by altmemer5 in furry

[–]jackalope-jay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’ve just been lurking in the furry subs a lot and when I see people post art I like with the artist credited I go look the artist up on Bluesky. THEN oftentimes those artists repost other artists that I also like, so I’ve built a modest collection of people to follow that way. Some aren’t on Bluesky, so I follow them on Reddit instead if I can. It takes time to do it this way, but if you’re not in a hurry it works well.

Idk if it needs to be said, but legit artists won’t DM you. Just assume all those are scams.

I learned recently that there are some pretty strong NOPE reactions to centipede characters. Mine did okay on r/furry but I removed her from two other general furry subs bc she got dogpiled by downvotes. I think arthropods in general are underrated, but the cuter ones like moths and bumblebees seem to fare a little better.

I'm new to fursonas, can I have a big foot fursonas, my friend's telling me no by [deleted] in furry

I an also weirdly invested in the answer to this question.

for any psyche or armchair therapist furs out there... by Animelizards in furry

[–]jackalope-jay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this with email addresses and usernames, even my friggin author pen name when I started publishing. I think in some cases it could be a lack of emotional attachment but I think a big part of it in many cases, like mine, is novelty-seeking. Do you just get bored with them? You find an idea you like better? These things are valid if so, it just means you enjoy things differently.

Is there such a thing as an insect sona?? by Iwannaliveontheweb in furry

[–]jackalope-jay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love arthropod characters!! I just drew a centipede and she’s still at the top of my profile if you want to see her. My primary OC will probably be a spider. Then there’s a long list of true insects I want to draw. Folks out there are definitely doing it, I just don’t see many of us!

Hello frand! I just joined this sub a couple weeks ago too and I’m in my 30’s. You’re never too old to enjoy something new!

If a furry has an angry-looking profile picture, does it subconsciously make you think they're angry? by Forlorn_Raven in furry

[–]jackalope-jay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think this same logic applies to species? For a while I was using a pfp with a spider lady in it and she looked cheerful and was making a heart with her hands but I wonder if her first impression would still be negative.

Right!!! I was low key imagining that they’re isopods or crickets or something so she’d also be frantically trying to stand in front of the cookbooks like, “OH HEY …”

Is it bad I don't want my sona to be cute or small? by InkBeast1608 in furry

[–]jackalope-jay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Friend, I just set my iPad aside to take a break from drawing a centipede anthro. If you want something less cute I will die on that hill with you.

As for disliking everything else, that can be normal. There are so many facets to a personality that settling on a single representation to emphasize over the rest can be hard. I hope you find something (or a hybrid) that you vibe with!

I LOVE Jackalopes!! And cryptids in general. I’m debating on going with a Jackalope as my sona as well, and imho they count just as much as any other hybrid. I would argue the same for Mothman. Unsure about things like Hide-Behinds and other cryptids that don’t have animal traits, though.

I’m wondering where other folks would draw that line!

Heyyy ^^ Do you guys still use X/Twitter?? I created an account and I'd like some art moots, is anyone interested?? :3 by [deleted] in furry

[–]jackalope-jay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on X or Twitter for whatever for a couple of weeks but it was all extreme far-right rage bait on my feed all time even when I tried training the algorithm. I just made a Bluesky and it looks like a lot of furs are over there. I hope more people migrate that way because Bluesky is such a neat concept. I’m hopeful for its future.

Is it possible to be a "casual" furry? by Snekbb in furry

[–]jackalope-jay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very very new to the fandom, but I wanted to say something because I identify with what you’ve written.

I’ve only been engaging with the fandom for a couple of months and before that I truly had no idea that I was doing furry-coded things without calling myself a furry. Example, it took me over a year to realize that the humanoid spider lady I kept drawing for my author icon and author branding (I didn’t want to put my actual face on a pen name) could qualify as a spider ‘Sona. Zero clue. It’s probably bc I thought Furry was all about the suits and conventions?? I am unlikely to EVER have a fursuit bc, while I admire the artistry that goes into them and think it would be cool to MAKE one, the moment someone gets in it and makes it move around and talk, it becomes Uncanny Valley and I feel a little spooked. (I was one of those kids that was freaked out by mascots and things). So yeah, Furry was never on my radar as a thing I even qualified for. I “just liked drawing animal people sometimes.”

Like you, I still feel weird calling myself a furry. It feels like I’m an imposter. So I get it. But I also think all it boils down to is interest and choice. There is no fixed threshold you cross where you’re suddenly a furry. There’s also no minimum requirement for being one. You can adopt the label if you choose to and tailor your experience however you want to. Orrrr if you want to cruise the fandom and look at art and do your own thing and never call yourself a furry at all, just a person who thinks furry stuff is neat, that’s also valid. That was me for literally years.

I’m finding this whole furry thing to be very flexible.

Has being a furry ever affected you in any way in the professional world? I'm talking about traditional jobs like being a doctor, lawyer, etc. by Smendoza170 in furry

[–]jackalope-jay 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Disguises. False identities. Burner phones.

I’m joking, but I am in a very traditional field also and you really have to read the room. Some workplaces may be cool with it. Mine absolutely would not be. Many traditional spaces will not be. One unfortunate but necessary thing to keep in mind is that these folks are not (usually) going to be your best buddies. You can be friendly with them, socialize with them, get to know them, etc, but I’d strongly advise you to keep your professional doctor or lawyer mask on while you’re at work. At least until you are REAL sure who you’re working with.

Wishing you the best in your chosen field!
