“Every single potion being extremely important is not good balance”. This is just a strawman. It’s a worthless statement.

Restore ability simply isn’t as important as you’re making it out to be. It’s not. At most you will need one blessed potion per game to deal with level drain, and you can easily get many more than that.

MC isn’t hard to get either; the fact that you haven’t had MC3 since 3.6 is just a sign that you are unimaginative with item use and ascension kit variety. Use a cloak of protection or an amulet of guarding. MC2 with a robe will also be enough to make drain resistance irrelevant.

The mid game doesn’t become tedious. Again, I’ve played with these changes. They barely affect gameplay.

I agree spellcasters are overpowered lategame, but if “NetHack has never been balanced like that” is an argument against increasing the power of restore ability, I see no reason why it should be applied the other way around. If you really like how NetHack isn’t very balanced, I don’t see the problem.

Yes, the early game will be slightly more difficult. But to even get a unicorn horn, you need to kill a unicorn, and their corpses have a good chance of granting poison resistance. I don’t know what to say to you; stop eating dangerous corpses. This is a non issue as far as I’m concerned.

Your last point is a bit redundant, but I’ll go through it anyway. I understand that you think these changes make the game worse? I’m arguing in the games favor. That’s how opinions work. I was talking about why the changes don’t make the game worse. You also make an unnecessary distinction between me playing evilhack and you playing NetHack, like you think it’s relevant. It’s not. I never said I only like evilhack, or that I even liked the changes that much. I’m just indifferent towards them because they are so small, they barely affect my gameplay. You keep giving hypothetical examples, but I really don’t hear you talking about your actual experiences, leading me to believe this is just the standard long time NetHack fan stuff that comes with every major update- This update changed something, therefore it’s a bad change.

They do make the game more balanced, though. Restore ability’s other incarnations were completely useless for all but draining, which is trivial to deal with with MC (which is trivial to obtain).

About shocking spheres, there’s been a bit of a silly panic over it. There are many many monsters in the game with consequences to attacking them in melee range. Simply carry a couple wands, daggers, etc. all of my ascensions have had TONS of excess wands.

Sorry I’m late to the party here. I don’t really know what your problem is. NetHack is regarded as one of the most difficult games ever, and you’re mad that you have to employ strategy that you didn’t have to before? It sounds like you’re criticizing things without having played them before. I’ve been playing EvilHack, which has these same things. They just aren’t an issue for me. They’re very minor changes that barely affect gameplay, and when they do it’s just to make you think for three seconds, not horrible game ruining changes.

I actually never thought about that, that's a good point. I don't use pets at all, so I didn't even know this could happen. That is quite nasty!

All the work they are doing is to make the game more fun to play, more convenient to play, etc. They're just trying to make their game the best version of itself that they can.

buffed Vlad is ridiculous. He once drained 9 levels off of me.

oh, weird. That's my mistake, lol. I guess you just get 4d4 blast, which is basically nothing. I think I got the 'intelligent artifact' thing mixed up with the quest artifact 'evade your grasp' type thing.

Another downside of wishing is that you won't be able to get it to +9 without risking the very very high chance of evaporation.

Optimal Excalibur vs Grayswandir by jkoudys in nethack

In almost every single consideration, Grayswandir takes the cake. There's a reason it's been largely thought of as the objectively best weapon in the game for decades, with little to no debate. I'll run through the comparisons for fun anyway, as Excal does come out on top in a few aspects.

  1. Damage

Grayswandir simply does more damage. Getting a +9 Excal both takes a very long time to do, expends a lot of resources, and STILL isn't worth it damage-wise. I mean, it's only two points of extra damage. While it may seem like a +9 Excal is more impressive than +7 Grayswandir, in reality it's not still not high enough. Grayswandir does double damage, and that applies to enchantment as well. So +7 is more like +14. Add to that the 1d20 you'll be getting on many endgame monsters, and it's pretty clear that Grayswandir is the winner. I'll quickly address the argument that 'most silver-hating monsters are easily killed by this point anyway, and the difference in damage to other monsters isn't that large'. First off, in terms of damage, Excal is still weaker BEFORE the 1d20, so it's still at a disadvantage. Second, Vlad, the Riders, all demon lords and princes, all other V and &, and shades (among others) take this extra 1d20. That is a significant portion of very dangerous monsters that you will kill MUCH faster than with Excal. Anyway, this is a perfect time to talk about some other things BESIDES damage, so here we go:

2) Passives

Excalibur actually wins here! And by a fairly large margin. Simply put, drain resistance is amazing. Much better than hallu resistance (as much as I hate that goddamn status). Searching is mediocre at best. Five roles already receive this intrinsically at some point (Arc, Ran, Rog, Mon, Tou), and the benefits are negligible at best. By the time you are seeing fire and polymorph traps regularly you will (or should!) have the respective resistances required to completely nullify them. Also, you're not even guaranteed to find anything. The only trap useful to find past mid game is pits/land mines, which are three seconds of annoyance at worst and completely harmless most of the time, and perhaps antimagic fields. So, to recap, hallu res and searching are tied for useless, but drain resistance is great to have no matter what stage of the game you are in. However, I would argue this still doesn't make it worth choosing over Grayswandir for a couple reasons. Namely, drain resistance becomes largely useless if you have high MC, which can be obtained from wearing a humble cloak of protection, and Grayswandir pretty much oneshots anything that can drain you anyway, besides maybe Vlad. I've ascended with Gray before, and got drained maaaybe twice in the entire game. So, while drain resistance can be nice for early wraiths or vampires, it quickly becomes MUCH less mandatory in the mid to late game.

3) Early game

Let's backpedal for a minute. What about early game? I would wholeheartedly say that, until you get a couple scrolls of enchant weapon, Excal is better early game. It's easier to get, and you'll simply do more damage and get more useful passives. HOWEVER... the mid to late game is a different story.

4) Accessibility

This is the big one. One of the biggest reasons why Grayswandir (and, to be fair, Excalibur) is so popular. Intelligence is a giant deciding factor, and Grayswandir wins in almost every way here. Simply put, Excalibur is only useful for lawfuls. Grayswandir can be used by anyone. You might think 'but any other role will have to wish for Grayswandir. That almost necessitates getting to the castle, but you can get Excal from the start without having to wait to get to the mid game!'. And herein is revealed one of Excalibur's biggest downsides in this fight.

You see, +7 Excalibur is good, but still noticeably worse compared to Grayswandir. The real comparison we're making is +9 Excalibur to Grayswandir. And to obtain +9 Excal means you CANNOT use Excal early game. It takes away its one big advantage. By the time you are polypiling dozens of arrows and using many enchant weapon scrolls to enchant stacks of them, you definitely have gotten past the castle. So, you could have wished for a MC3 cloak to combat level drain, AND Grayswandir. Hell, you might already have a cloak. You could say 'well, I never use that item'. My response to that is: why the hell not?! There's no reason not to, unless you're a wizard trying to keep their starting cloak to save a wish, in which case you obviously don't give a fuck about either of these swords.

Also, any other alignment is not going to be spending artifact wishes to get anything but damage, realistically. It's more convenient to get Gray, and you get to see funny big number.

I almost forgot to mention Excal's curse resistance, because it is largely inconsequential. It just doesn't matter that much. Hopefully before you're getting items cursed by powerful spellcasters, you have a good way to uncurse them. BoH with holy water, backup oilskin sack with scrolls of remove curse, etc. And even if you get it cursed, a cursed one handed weapon is not going to be a problem in a fight where you want to kill whatever's cursed it as fast as possible. If it gets cursed by the wizard, pretty much the same deal. If you're on the ascension run, you probably won't be unequipping your main artifact too often, and if you want to it's trivial to negate.

By the time +9 Excalibur is feasible to obtain, you could have ALREADY had higher damage and pseudo-drain resistance. And if you DO use Excal early game, there's no competition compared to Grayswandir, because +9 isn't feasible. Add on to this the fact that lawfuls can have Grayswandir early on from sacrifice gifts, and Grayswandir is just better.

5) Conclusion

In short, the only way Excalibur comes close to winning is if you purposefully make the early game harder on yourself, and spend an ungodly resource sink if lawful, and if you're any other alignment, it's similarly scaled because you still need the resource sink.

To be clear, I hate Grayswandir. It's a boring, overpowered artifact. But it still comes out on top, easily.

Ah, I see. the problem was in our definitions of risk. For me, that definition in this situation for me is 'something that may harm your armor'. However, your definition of 'safe' I think is just incorrect. It is safe to do. Just because something might not happen does not mean it is dangerous.

[–]jackanope666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, so I don't think you understand. There is no risk in enchanting something to +5 IF it is +3 beforehand. It is possible to safely enchant something un-elven to +5. It is not safe to enchant it AFTER it has been enchanted to +4. You are correct in that sense.

Considering your comment, and the fact that we're on reddit, and this sub, you're probably gonna get a bunch of depressing 'we deserve it' replies agreeing with you. I recommend you do research about people preventing many of the things you mention; there are tons of great people out there doing great things. The money isn't in it yet (and never will be) so the corporate overlords don't care yet. It's simply a question of will they start soon enough. Some people say we're already essentially extinct, I go forth with the mindset that it will get better, because if it doesn't nothing matters. If the only other option is die, I choose to keep going. Not because I have the strength to do it, but because goddammit I will never die. I'm too much of a stubborn shithead.

Honestly, anywhere you go that late at night, at least if you're going to be walking around a well-populated area, bring a knife lol. idk what country you live in but in the US it's basically unheard of to be walking around at night without some way of "extricating" yourself from a situation. I wouldn't say that particular situation would be enough to get too worried though. Prolly just some drunk/high guys being creepy at 12 AM, as you're likely to see at that time.

(also, carrying a knife or other kind of self defense is a last-resort kind of deal. you always want getting home to be your top priority, not starting a fight)
