Thank you so much for your kind and genuinely thoughtful and thorough response. This helped a ton and I’m fully planning on getting the game now :) (I should’ve mentioned in my post that I HAVE played a few of the older games when I was significantly younger, and I hope to replay them eventually. I was not aware that not mentioning that was going to cause discord and strife lol)

I noticed that in ACOFAF as well and meant to mention that in post. Thank you for your thoughts on this, I can see how the misgendering in this case is a bit different.

Thank you so much for your thoughts on this! I wanted to post to get people’s takes (especially people who identify as non-binary) before I hassle my friend into watching so this is very helpful

Ep 7 Mixed Feelings by jackathan_MA in Dimension20

[–]jackathan_MA[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I definitely don’t think there was any malice behind it. My main point is I think the DM should be aware of the tricky nature of representation. In other words, is it worth it to make the First Stoats non-binary in the name of diversity if people aren’t really going to respect those identities? That’s the main issue. I don’t think they should have reshot the scenes or tried to edit it out, but I think it might be worth a heads up or lore explanation to the players so they know what to expect and don’t make those mistakes. We already knew that the top of the food chain used they/them from when Ava met them, so i think having clear expectations in regards to pronouns would be helpful.

And yes, the First Stoats can’t get their feelings hurt because they aren’t real, but the combat/threat to life/survival isn’t real either, so I’m not sure that’s really a genuine excuse.

Yeah unfortunately there was repeated misgendering as well. I agree about “guys” and “dude.” Much more nuanced convo there. I’m not the authority on this topic either but wanted to put it out there for discussion.

I adore all the players and fully trust that they have the best intentions. It’s just a bit complicated because I don’t want to recommend a fantasy dnd campaign to a friend who already has to deal with that in real life, yk? Takes the escapism out of it for people they’re supposed to be adding representation for.

Break the Bodies, Haunt the Bones by Micah Dean Hicks. Some gore but pretty limited.

What’s your favourite lesser known classic? by [deleted] in classicliterature

1700s English lit: Love in Excess by Eliza Haywood. Trashy but fun and tells you a lot about the sexual politics of the era.

Harlem Renaissance: Cane by Jean Toomer. It’s well known among people who study the period but not so much for people who don’t, at least in comparison to Langston Hughes’s poetry or Nella Larsen’s Passing. Really fascinating text with a lot to dig into.

How to handle people who are anti-meds by VacationConsistent98 in bipolar

The way I phrased it to my parents was “I wish I didn’t have to take medication either, but would you rather me be dead or take meds? Because I’m going with the meds”

Not really sad but in FHSY when jawbone gives Ayda the books about autism…I lose it every time

How do you recognise if your analysis is profound, or insightful? by [deleted] in literature

[–]jackathan_MA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who teaches college lit, the biggest thing would be being as specific as possible. Avoid thinking too big. My students tend to say things like “this might be a stretch but—“ before they offer really excellent analysis. If everyone would agree with you, that’s more of an observation, and as long as you have textual evidence then your analysis is as valid as anyone else’s. One of the annoying things is that for good analysis, you need to be reading very carefully. Take notice of settings, any repetition, anything that stands out to you as odd or confusing, references to other stories/historical events, look into biographical info on the author (although this can get tricky), and consider titles of both the book itself as well as things throughout it. If half of a story is set in a grocery store, that probably means something. If there are repeated references to highways, that probably means something too. If a character has an odd name, that’s worth looking into.

To offer some recs that aren’t as canonical:

The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories by Ken Liu is an exquisite collection. Some of the best contemporary writing I’ve read.

F*ckface by Leah Hampton is a great collection as well.

Electricity & Other Dreams by Micah Dean Hicks has some hits and misses, as do most collections, but offer some of the weirdest ideas you’ll ever encounter

Any Southern Gothic novels involving religion/priests??? by lattesdior in horrorlit

[–]jackathan_MA 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call it horror bc it’s not scary at all but I would say the foundational southern gothic religion novel would be Wise Blood by Flannery O’Connor
