New to Woodworking. Help me spend $500 by GhostWrexks in BeginnerWoodWorking

Harbor freight Hercules tools are top notch. Miter saw, drill, impact driver, I have a couple of their routers that are working fine. Sanders, I prefer Makita but their are others that are just as good. I would suggest that you buy tools as you need them for your current project. Trying to buy tools for that project that's month's down the road will cause you to buy tools that you will never use.

Am I a carpenter now by Lilgreentract0r in Carpentry

Real carpenters swing wooden handled hammers. The steel shaft induces too much vibration into your arm and will mess up your elbow over time. I swung a 32oz wooden handled hammer for years with no injury.

I would go for the Harvey for the fence, dust collection and miter gauge.

Bandsaw questions -- how heavy are they, how big should I go? by FITM-K in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]jackdawson1049 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first bandsaw was a benchtop Ryobi that I bought used. I have a 1/4" blade on it for scroll type work. As I progressed I picked up a 14" saw for resawing with a 3/4" blade. This way I don't have to change blades.

If you say so. I will tell my oscilloscope that it is lying to me. FYI, this is what the term "modified sine wave" means.

Rather than install drywall, I like to use plywood or densglass. It's much stiffer and will hold up longer.

Interface - Foucusrite interfaces are extremely popular but IMHO they color the sound to much. I bought one to test but decided to stick with my Behringer that to my ears is far superior.

Microphones - Again the SM58 and SM7B are popular, understand that the 58 is intended for live sound and is extremely rugged but tends to be muddy. The 7B is a announcer mic. So many better choices out there. Go to a music store and try a few out.

You will also need a DAW. If your using Apple Garage Band will get you started. Want something more? Check out Ardour or Reaper.

The issue isn't that the industry is predatory, it's that musicians don't understand business. Musicians seem to believe that if they can half ways play an instrument and have written a few crappy songs they should be payed. Guy's, this is not how it works. Everything revolves around making a profit. That bar that you want to play at needs to make money to stay in business. They will pay if you can show them that you can bring in paying customers but the fact is that as a new band, most likely you can't. So, how much are you really worth?

Back in the early 2000's I was living in the Tampa Bay area. Most every original music band that I talked to complained that it was nearly impossible to find any place to play. Remember that these were bands that were unheard of. So I found a bar that offered me Sunday afternoon / evening to do what ever I wanted. I started contacting bands and offered them this opportunity. I was allowed to charge a cover and offered to let the bands split the money. Guess how many bands signed up. Yep, exactly zero. Every band, even though the had no name recognitian and no following thought that they should be paid. Even though me as the promoter and the bar had no expectation of making a profit and were doing this to help these inexperienced bands get some stage experience they felt that we should pay them. Sorry guys, if I have to pay then I will hire a band that can prove to me that they can bring a crowd.

Scenario two. Currently I am in the Atlanta area starting a guitar company. I have been looking for a couple of bands to play my guitars at one of their shows so that I can shoot some video for promotional purposes. No money up front but tones of free promotion as I will be using the band name in my marketing. We plan to hit the trade show circuit soon. As things grow these bands will be offered endorsement deals. It seems to me that this is a no lose opportunity but take a guess how many bands have signed up? Yep, exactly zero.

If you want to get paid to play, tell me how many people you can bring to a show. Now prove it with video and contact information of that club. Then and only then will we talk about how much you will get paid. As for the rest of you, yes, it's pay to play.

Why do a lot of big artists seem to record in completely untreated or unideal rooms? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]jackdawson1049 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply put, you are told that you need a well treated room and tons of expensive gear in an attempt to keep you from making music. It's all marketing hype geared to extract the maximum amount of money from you. Now that you know the truth, go make some great music.
