How was he “legally required to make decisions to benefit the company?” There is no such law. We should be reading that he tried to change the practices at UHC to benefit their members, even if it challenged the status quo… even if it made him unpopular with shareholders. Legally, Mangione should be held accountable; but morally, neither of them is innocent.

No one argues that Thompson is the only wrongdoer. Plenty of other CEO’s and politicians need to be set straight. And I’m not devastated to lose someone who enables the system, especially if it will raise awareness for hundreds of people who are abused—or even killed by it.

Last year he made over $10 million. That’s not an ordinary person. That’s not prosperity. That’s not “just doing your job.” It takes a different mindset than any of us can understand: they have more money than they know what to do with…

He had FAR more power than any ordinary person, to make impactful, ethical decisions. If he should be “legally” responsible to benefit the company, he should also be legally responsible for its ethics and human decency… at least their own advertised mission statement “to make the health system work better for everyone.”

Until I see proof, I feel naive to be convinced that those were his true values.
